Absurdeste Traumautos

Special Tools for new Seals

Hey everyone, I’d like to reseal the top end (and maybe bottom) of my FXS 80 over the winter, as there are a few leaks on the engine, such as the pushrod tubes and other spots. plus a leak somewhere around the transmission sprocket. I wanted to ask what special tools or specific items I need to buy that aren't usually found in a standard toolbox or standard for normale maintenance.

Cable from Mainbreaker to Seatmount

I have a cable on my 80s fxs that goes from the plus side of the mainbreaker to the seat mount (second pic). Seems weird to me, is it necessary?

Dachte evtl an DB0XAN?

Shovel Down

After my first long ride, during which it performed admirably, it unfortunately just died an hour before the end—completely dead: no lights, no ignition, nothing. The battery seems relatively new, and it had started up fine using the electric starter just 20 minutes earlier; I also checked the battery connections to make sure they were tight. What else could it be?

Butterfly Carb Help

Hey guys, I’ve got a problem: when I’m riding outside of town and really open up the throttle, everything works fine and it accelerates properly. But when I back off the throttle, it starts stuttering badly and eventually stalls—unless I crack the throttle open again when the stuttering starts; then it revs up normally and keeps going. My guess is that the float needle might not be opening fully—or is sticking—so fuel stops flowing when the float bowl empties quickly. Am I on the right track, or do you have any other theories?

For context, my carburetor was leaking, so I bought a rebuild kit and installed a new float needle. After that, the carburetor stopped leaking, but the problem I mentioned earlier maybe occurred afterwards, not 100% shure because the bike is new. That’s why I think it might be related.

The trouble in Shovelhead

For those of you experienced with the Trouble Head: My Shovel has been running great so far, but what are the most common or typical issues specific to this model that might force an unplanned stop by the side of the road?

How much Oil is too much

Yes, I know it’s a very sensationalist title, and I strongly suspect my picture fits the classic "shovelhead oil jokes" stereotype perfectly. Still, I’d be interested to know at what point one should actually consider resealing the engine. For context: I bought the bike yesterday from an elderly man who acquired it as the second owner in 1986 and had ridden it a few hundred miles a year since then.

Talk me into or out of a late Shovel! (1980)

I came from a 103. ATM I have a Dyna with a Twin Cam 88, I’ve already done quite a bit of work on it, including engine work. Then I went one step back to an FXR with an Evo engine, on which I’ve also already done a lot of work. And the next logical step would now be a Shovel that’s currently for sale.
