Sa nasabing live, sinagot ni Sen. Pia ang sinabi ni NBI Director Melvin Matibag na wala umanong NBI agent sa Senate premises nang maganap ang putukan.

Pinuna niya rin ang umano’y naging pagsigaw at pagsagot ni Dir. Matibag sa kaniya na “wala siyang magagawa, wala kami diyan” nang ipagbigay-alam nila ni Sen. Loren Legarda ang sitwasyon sa Senado.

IMPACT LEADERSHIP: SENATE ELECTS NEW COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSONS; BONG GO REPLACES RISA ON HEALTH, LOREN TAKES OVER BASIC EDUCATION FROM BAM

The new Senate leadership under Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano on Monday, May 18, approved a new set of committee chairpersons, resulting in key leadership changes in several major committees.

Sen. Bong Go replaced Sen. Risa Hontiveros as chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, while Sen. Loren Legarda took over the Committee on Basic Education previously chaired by Sen. Bam Aquino.

Under the reorganization, Legarda will retain the chairmanship of the Committee on Culture and the Arts.

Other committee assignments include:

• Sen. Pia Cayetano — Ways and Means (retained); Sustainable Development Goals, Innovation and Futures Thinking (retained); and Energy (retained)
• Sen. Joel Villanueva — Higher, Technical and Vocational Education (replacing Legarda)
• Sen. Jinggoy Estrada — National Defense and Security, Peace, Unification and Reconciliation (replacing Legarda); Games and Amusement (replacing Sen. Erwin Tulfo)
• Sen. Rodante Marcoleta — Public Services (replacing Sen. Raffy Tulfo)
• Sen. Robinhood Padilla — Public Information and Mass Media (retained); Cultural Communities and Muslim Affairs (retained)

The changes come following the recent Senate leadership transition that installed Cayetano as Senate President after the ouster of Sen. Tito Sotto.

IMPACT LEADERSHIP: SENATE CONVENES AS IMPEACHMENT COURT WITH 23 SENATOR-JUDGES PRESENT

The Senate formally convened as an impeachment court on Monday, May 18, with 23 senator-judges in attendance for the trial proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte.

Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano presided over the opening of the impeachment court, marking the chamber's transition from legislative work to its constitutional duty as an impeachment tribunal.

The convening comes following the transmittal of the Articles of Impeachment from the House of Representatives, triggering the Senate's obligation under the Constitution to forthwith organize itself as an impeachment court.
