What difference does 20 years make? Comparing ddrum4se with Roland VAD503

I had the opportunity to spend last weekend with a Roland VAD-503 kit (with TD-27 sound module, CY-14C-T hats, CY-18DR ride, PD140-DS snare)... a kit 20 years newer and about $2K more expensive than my Clavia ddrum4se kit that I use at home. I've been thinking about upgrading my kit now that my kids are both using it to learn/practice, so part of me was hoping that the tech would have advanced to the point that the Roland was like sitting down at an acoustic kit, while my wallet was dreading the same thing.

Overall, I was far from blown away. The Roland was better in many ways, but sure didn't seem 20 years and $2K better.

Drum pads/triggering: no difference in latency (and to be fair, I didn't expect any, since the 2-4 ms latency is one of ddrum's strengths), and the larger snare (14" instead of 12") and floor tom (14" instead of 10") were nice but not life-changing, and there wasn't much difference in feel between the mesh heads on either kit. Edge: Roland

Cymbal pads/triggering: the Roland cymbals felt much better, and the multi-zone support made it easier to trigger the sound I was looking for, for the most part. I really had to hammer the crash to get it to open up, but I expect that could be adjusted in the settings that I didn't have time to dig into. I'm not the most technical player, but found that the sound correspondence to my pedal movement feels better on my ddrum kit than the Roland. Edge: Roland

Dynamics: I didn't find the Roland kit to be as responsive to subtle dynamics as the ddrum. Ghost notes on the snare were similar, but the toms on my ddrum are more expressive (I was using the 13" and 16" maple sounds on the Roland kit, if I recall). I can play quietly on the ddrum floor tom and it sounds quiet... noticeably less attack, like you'd hear with a real drum. The Roland sounded like a harder hit with the volume turned down... it didn't have the tonal character of a lighter touch. This may also be something that could be adjusted for in the settings, but as it was, I was disappointed. Edge: ddrum

Sounds/Brain: the Roland has about a bazillion times as much memory and processing power as the Clavia, so no surprise that it has far more sounds available and a much more advanced ability to modify those sounds. I bought the ddrum because I wanted something that sounded like real drums and then do my processing in a mixer. That's where it gets tricky... I have 6 outputs from the ddrum, so can easily route kick on one channel, snare on another, stereo toms on two and stereo cymbals on the remaining two. I know Roland has other brains with more outputs, but it was a pain trying to get everyone's individual monitor mixes and a FOH mix from only a stereo pair and 2 more direct outs. Not sure exactly how they had everything routed, but as far as monitors went, kick and snare were on one channel and everything else was on another, so very limited flexibility when playing live without using a digital interface. I preferred the snare and cymbal sounds on the Roland, but liked the toms on the ddrum more and was able to get a kick I was happy with on either one. I'd call this one a tie except for two factors: the Roland has more lifelike snare behaviour (not sure if it's due to the positional sensing in the pad or better samples or both) and every once in a while my ddrum will run out of processing power and cut off a cymbal because it just can't keep up with the limited memory. Edge: Roland

Mechanics/setup: I'm a bit torn on this one... the Roland shells do look better on stage, but for my purposes having something that takes up more space and is tougher to transport isn't a win. The ddrum tom mounts will sometimes loosen up over time, and I didn't get the feeling that would happen on the Roland, so for me it was a tie. If you care more about portability the ddrum would be much better; if you care about looking like a real kit then of course it would be the Roland. I don't move mine much and don't care if it looks like a drumset or not, so it's a question of whether the smaller footprint of the ddrums compensates for the toms potentially loosening/swivelling on their stand, so it's really a wash in the end. Edge: tie

I think the biggest disappointment for me was the lack of nuance in the toms but much more so in the cymbals. I was hoping that we'd be at the point now where things like a swell that I use often on acoustic cymbals would be natural to translate to the advanced Roland cymbal pads. The cymbal experience was better on the Roland than the ddrum, but nowhere near what I had hoped it would be. I'm not sure if using the edrums just to trigger and then running a VST on a laptop would change that, but it was disheartening.

Conclusion: I won't be in a rush to sell my ddrum4se and get a Roland (at least this one). I would like to have better-feeling cymbal pads, but since I'm not gigging or recording professionally I'm not sure that the high cost of getting the Roland USB cymbals (and snare) and corresponding brain would be the right move... it's a definite improvement, but still wasn't really satisfying, for a lot of extra money. The quest continues...

Tips for VAD516?

I'm going to be playing on a VAD516 kit for a.multi-day event this weekend. Any tips on must-do setting changes or best stock kits to start with (rock, probably something with a fairly deep snare and warmer/washy cymbals)?

I've played on my own ddrum4SE kit for ages, so not concerned about adjusting to digital vs acoustic, but wanted to know if there are any specifics about this kit/module I should know going in.

Alternative to garage band?

Kids need a laptop and I'm 100% a windows guy, but my wife is determined that they need Garage Band (which would require a Mac or IOS device). Any good alternatives to Garage Band for Windows?

Dead end with mobility loyalty. Keep trying or port out?

My wife and I are on Unlimited 120 5G+ - Unlimited Canada-US talk, text and 120GB for $45, plus a bring-it-back Samsung S24 for $1 per month. Our contracts expire in September.

I was hoping to keep the same (or similar) plan and maybe knock a few bucks off the price, but in talking to Loyalty they said my plan is no longer available and the best they could do for me would be to keep the plan and raise my bill by $20/month/line. They suggested calling back near the end of August to see if they have anything else available then.

I'm eligible for EPP, but haven't found any better deals that way.

In looking around, there are a couple good options for other providers... Kini uses the Telus network and has a plan with 75GB (not unlimited) US/CAN/MEX for $35/month. I don't need Mexico, but the US data is very helpful, and 75GB would be enough. Fizz is similar, $36/month for 80GB US/CAN.

I have home internet as well, but it looks like they don't give any discount for having the mobility lines, so no impact there if I go with another provider.

The thing holding me back is the phone hardware. Back when the devices were subsidised and you kept it at the end, we'd pass them down to our kids (who don't need contracts/service but use the phones with wifi or hotspot off of us), but it's been a while since that's been the case and their devices are in need of a refresh, so I was hoping to buy out our S24s at $220 each to give to them, and then get new bring-it-back devices for us (currently the S25 is advertised for $0/month, but out of stock and with our current plan we're not eligible). If we don't have that option with Kini or Fizz we're looking at a significantly higher cost... around $500 to get a used S25, which works out to $20 month over the same 2-year period.

So, taking the phones into account if we look at the cost of a 2-year timeline and owning the S25 at the end of it (assuming we can get the no-cost bring-it-back phone with Telus with a $220 buy-out at the end or pay $500 outright for a used one):

Telus (proposed rate, 120GB CAN/US): 24 x $65 + 220 = $1,780

Telus (current rate, 120GB CAN/US): 24 x $45 + 220 = $1,300

Kini (75GB CAN/US/MEX): 24 x $35 + 500 = $1,340

Fizz (80GB CAN/US): 24 x $26 + 500 = $1364

So, if I can get the deal I want with Telus it makes sense to stay with them: less hassle changing, and the phone is new when we start using it, rather than used. If Telus won't make a better offer, then the $400 extra cost to stay with them doesn't make sense.

For next steps, I'll check with Loyalty in August, but does anyone know if winback deals are significantly better than loyalty ones? I can go to Kini or Fizz without a contract, so it's low risk, just a hassle. Or should I try calling loyalty back and see if talking to someone else makes a difference? Any advice?

ET-2850 prints part of job and acts like it's done

Recently, our ET-2850 will print part of a job and then just stop, but mark the job as complete:

We're printing wirelessly from both Windows 10 and Windows 11 computers. Then, after a few minutes, this pops up:

https://preview.redd.it/029ak602vwch1.png?width=480&format=png&auto=webp&s=b454eb6da47ecffa31902515d224c6931e16b752

But at the same time, as far as Windows device manager is concerned, it's working normally:

https://preview.redd.it/y55qn7i9vwch1.png?width=382&format=png&auto=webp&s=231a464cff9d527c7775b4161ea924fb7b968bc2

If I do the "check connection" thing it runs through, changes something, but then still doesn't work any better. Tried removing and reinstalling the printer on the computer, cycling everything off (router, PC, printer), resetting the wireless settings on the printer... anything else that may fix it?

EDIT: forgot to mention that the firmware is up to date.

Just brake dust? Or should I be worried?

Have these odd dark spots on my front passenger wheel... nothing like this on any of the others. Is it just brake dust, or could there be something more problematic?

E70 X5, ugly factory 5-spoke wheels, but I've never noticed this before, if it's happened in the past.

midrange options to upgrade from clavia ddrum 4SE?

I invested in a ddrum 4se kit (with cast precision heads, 1000's of levels of dynamics, made by Clavia) back in the early 2000's when they were state of the art, and they've served me well for gigging and practicing. My kids are learning now, and I'd like to get something with, especially, more realistic cymbal feel and modelling so that they can eventually transition from electronic to acoustic with as little terror as possible. Planning to pick up something used to keep the price down, but I haven't been keeping up with what's new, so need some guidance from you good people.

My ddrum kit has great-feeling pads (kick, snare, tom), very fast and solid triggering, very durable feel on the rack. What I don't like is the very limited cymbal experience (semi-circular metal with some rubber over top, very little nuance and finicky triggering) and the aged technology (can't hold many sounds at once, it's a pain to change the sounds out, and the cymbals are apt to start cutting off if there's too much going on because that memory gets used up in a hurry).

Must have:

- Ability to use a normal kick pedal

- Mesh heads

- Playing experience that is reasonably close to acoustic

- Good natural sounds

- Ability to run without a PC

- Enough inputs to run kick, snare, hat, 4 toms, 3-4 cymbals (and if I could continue to use my ddrum pads with XLR out, even better)

Would be great to have:

- ability to use normal hi-hat stand

- flexible outputs/routing (nice to have the 6 I'm used to currently for kick, snare, stereo toms and stereo cymbals so I can eq as needed in my mixer)

- relatively quiet, but we're in a detached home and having cymbal pads that are a little louder but more realistic would be just fine as a trade-off

Don't need (or don't want):

- Acoustic appearance - I won't be gigging with them and don't need them to look like drums. To keep the footprint compact in the practice room, compact pads are better than something that looks like a kick drum/toms

- Killer hardware - as long as I can clamp them to my Gibraltar rack I don't care if the stock/system hardware is good or not

- Toys - if I'm choosing between great sounds from 3 kits, a dozen snares, and a few styles of cymbals (A Custom/bright, K/dark, Istanbul/washy) or a billion mediocre but configurable sounds, I'd take fewer but better. I can do effects in my mixer as needed.

- Latest and greatest - I'm coming from what was excellent 25 years ago, so I'm fine with a kit that's 5-10 years old as long as it's a solid upgrade in terms or playability.

I gather that the Roland TD27/30 is a great choice, but locally they're selling for over $3K (Canadian), so more than I was planning to spend (along with the TD-50 or anything better), but it looks like there's a sharp drop-off below that to kits with detached hi-hats and a much less realistic experience. Any suggestions for other kits I should be looking for, or will I need to adjust my budget to find something that feels good to play?

Can't get this in... yet somehow thought it was a good idea to do my own N55 valve cover replecement

2012 E70 N55. If your dexterity is better than mine, it may work for you. I should have just taken it to my Indy since he's probably going to have to fix it for me anyways.

Help with renewal (with or without EPP) for mobility and home internet?

My two mobility lines are soon up for renewal, and I'm wondering if there are any better deals to be had on home internet as well. Any suggestions, or reps who can help?

Currently, for mobility:

- Plan is Unlimited 120 5G+ - Unlimited Canada-US talk, text and 120GB data at 5G+ speed up to 2Gbps, $45/month/line

 - BIB devices are Samsung S24 128 GB, $4.55/month/device

I'd like to lower the costs if I could, keeping US access, but could reduce the amount of high-speed data in the package. I'd like to get a device I didn't have to return after, if I could do that at a similar cost (prefer to stick to Samsung).

And for home internet:

PureFibre 1.5G, unlimited data $89/month

I'd be fine with downgrading to 1G (I don't get over 1G at my router anyways due to cabling from the fibre box to router), but need to keep unlimited data.

Not interested in any other services, but I do have EPP through my work.

Any suggestions?
