Love, Makoto’s “Dear Sushi” for DC Summer Restaurant Week

Nigiri: Sakura tai snapper - kombu oil, sesame.
King salmon - ponzu, sakura salt.
Bluefin tuna - soy marinated, wasabi.
Hamachi - light soy, yuzu salt.
O-toro - house soy, jalapeño koji.

Hand rolls: Spicy tuna - jalapeño, wasabi, green onion, soy.
Baked crab - kani-kama, dynamite sauce.

There was also edamame and Hatcho miso soup to start, with a mango yuzu creamsicle for dessert.

All super tasty and look forward to coming back for their AYCE brunch option!

Dairy-free Vanilla + BTS Oreos

Really love the new BTS Oreos (Korean brown sugar pancake) so decided to crumble them into a dairy-free vanilla base for a different kind of cookies and cream flavor.

The recipe is from Food 52’s “Just-the-Best Vanilla Ice Cream” but modified based on feedback here where folks replace their heavy cream with Country Crock Plant Cream and milk with Califia Batista oat milk. Still kept the egg yolks though.

It froze really well and I was definitely pleasantly surprised with the final result.

Business Class Seating Recommendation (first time)

Greetings! This will be our first time flying business class with British Airways, so I'm hoping to get some advice/suggestions on seating from folks.

From IAD to LHR we're on a Boeing 777-300er. This is an overnight flight, and while being able to actually sleep was a major reason for the upgrade, we're also looking forward to the experience overall as newbies. Sitting together is also a priority.

The mini cabin with rows 5-7 is already booked up for any seats next to each other, so the next options start in the following cabin section with rows 8-18, or the last area with rows 19-24. Thinking 10 E/F maybe, but there's lots of availability.

LHR to IAD looks like a slightly different configuration with Boeing 777-200/300, so thinking about Row 2 or 7 E/F, unless there's any benefit to the other section with rows 10-14.

Thanks for any insights.

Newly diagnosed

Hello! Just wanted to share a quick intro, along with many thanks to everyone contributing and sharing insights, as I just discovered this group in researching my new diagnosis.

I (40m) just had a visit with my PCP and after reviewing my latest labs, here we are with Hashimoto’s.

Long story short, my PCP and I kind of stumbled into all this because after participating in a research study as a “healthy volunteer” a thyroid test there flagged my elevated TSH (7.08) and normal (lowish) T4 (.94) back in November. So then as part of my annual lab work, she also did a TPO antibody test (154). Fast forward a few months to May and my TSH keeps climbing (10.1) with no change in T4.

In hindsight, all the issues I’ve been brushing off for the past year are all classic symptoms, it just never occurred to me to raise the problem or dig deeper.

I’ll be starting 50mg levothyroxine soon and checking labs again in 6 weeks, so we’ll see what happens next.

I’m not feeling any particular way about starting meds, it is what it is right. But would appreciate any tips or experience that folks have to share about starting this journey.

Thanks!

Financiers

So one financier has whipped golden blond chocolate ganache and salted caramel and the other has whipped dark chocolate ganache, baileys, and salted caramel.

The financiers were made using Prue Leith’s recipe from GBBO (so much brown butter!) and the ganaches are based off Matt Adlard’s recipe with some minor tweaks.

In retrospect, I should’ve done the crunchy pearls in contrasting colors, but this was for a colleague’s birthday and he specifically requested an all white chocolate version for one of them 😅
