Marin Overnighter to Camp Taylor

I haven't done any extended trips on my Kona Unit, but getting out for weekends is still good fun. This trip hits some popular riding spots in Marin County. It's about 50 miles depending on exactly how you do it, and whether or not you tack on the extra 6 miles round trip for Indian food in Lagunitas :)

Essentially, start in Ross, bike out to Samuel P. Taylor State Park to camp, then up and down Pine Mountain the next day. For ATB / Gravel bikes, this riding gets pretty technical - Pine Mountain is very rocky. I've got 2.4" & 2.6" tires on my Unit, so it's a little bit of a cheat on the descents. Lots of energy needed to pedal around though.

There's a bikepacker's camp at the state park and it's usually got a least a few folks camping out. It's cool to see the different bikes people ride, some for pavement, some for dirt.

Full route details & map here for anyone interested.

Disclaimer, the link is my site. It's a tiny business that offsets a little of my bike related expenses.

Joaquin Miller MTB?

Anyone have some tips on which trails to hit or where to look around in JMP?

Me and my son just drove from Marin to Lake Cunningham only to find out they closed *all* the dirt jumps without any advance notice. We're trying to come up with plan B but we haven't rode at JMP at all.

Feel free to DM if you're willing to share some beta. I only have a rough idea of where to park and look for the "short" trails.

Logistics Help? Once Upon a BC Road Trip...

Hey! This post will be a bit long, any help is appreciated, even if just for one of the zones...

ROAD TRIP

My son is graduating high school this June. We live in California (Marin County). I'm taking him on a road trip to BC in early July. We're solid intermediate riders and can ride black level trails at Northstar, Mammoth, Santa Cruz, and have raced a little enduro (badly lol). We've got 170 travel big enduro bikes with good tires, brakes, etc... This is going to be a huge trip, our first time riding in BC -- I could use eyes on my planning to make sure we have a decent grasp of things. Thanks in advance!

ZONE 1 - WHISTLER

  • 3 days of riding

  • Staying in Creekside

  • Day 0: Explore outside the park after arriving, maybe hit AM/PM

  • Day 1: Progression in the park on our bikes

  • Day 2: Rent DH bikes, more progression

  • Day 3: Top of the World on our bikes, laundry, chill

  • Day 4: Leave for North Shore - Check out Alice Lakes on the way? Will probably do another day there too.

  • Day 4: Arrive North Shore Van late afternoon/evening

  • Day 5: ?

  • Day 6: ?

  • Day 7: ?

  • Day 8: ?

  • Day 9: Leave for Seattle, Half day at Galbraith on eebs

  • We'll also have one day in Ashland OR area to ride

  • Might need a rest day in the middle, so not sure how to prioritize the zones & trails below...

ZONE 2 - SEYMOUR (1 day)

  • Park @ top of Mt. Seymour Rd, ride down to CBC
  • CBC: Do a couple laps, go have lunch. Come back later...
  • Park @ Anne MacDonald Way, pedal up Old Buck
  • Corkscrew > Powerline > Pingu >  Pangor > (R) Birdie Bike Path > Empress
  • Boogie Nights looks like fun, but not sure it'll be as fun since we're not familiar with the speed to just pull up and hit all the gaps and whatnot. Will probably skip.

ZONE 3 - FROMME (1 Day)

  • Park @ top of Mountain Highway, pedal up to the trails. Each lap is a pedal back up.
  • Bobsled
  • Floppy Bunny
  • Expresso
  • Pipeline (if we have the energy)

ZONE 4 - DIAMOND HEAD (1 Day)

  • Park @ shuttle parking or secondary parking lot.
  • Shuttle up
  • Option 1: Ride down Meadow of the Grizzly (looks okayish)
  • Option 2: Ride down Cakewalk (looks fun) + climb trail
  • Ditch Pig > (R) Ring Creek Access Rd > pedal to lower Pseudo Tsuga
  • Shuttle up
  • Half Nelson > (L).Ring Creek Access Rd > pedal to secondary parking
  • Airplane Mode > pedal back up to lap it

ZONE 5 - ALICE LAKES (1-2 days)

  • I'm pretty confused here, I feel like we really need a couple days.
  • Interested in Miki's Magic, Man Boobs
  • Interested in Leave of Absence, Rupert, Pamplemousse
  • Interested in Upper Entrails, Room with a View, Donut
  • Depending on how things go, *maybe* interested in In n Out
  • Not really sure which parking or climb trails are best to use, seems like maybe Alice Lakes lot for some things or Garibaldi Highlands for other trails (??)

It's a lot of riding... We're conditioning and will be flexible to keep it fun. I just don't want to spend much time figuring out what/where/how once we're in BC. ANY comments on this are super appreciated, especially beta on parking, access, food and anything else ya got!

We arrive in Whistler on July 6. We're stoked!!

Out for a quick lunchtime rip today on my Kona Unit. Good conditions around Marin. I'm running around like Mary Poppins with my rack and bags, packing lunch and beverages, frolicking in the tick invested grasses and such, just living it up and having a blast!
