Peanut butter, jam, & fresh strawberries on toast
Got tickets to a game Wednesday evening and was thinking of riding with the family to Moda but wasn't sure what the bike parking situation is and if it's a safe place to park or if we have to worry about our bikes getting stolen. 2 ebikes, two street bikes, one is kind of a cool folding bike.
Have you done it?
53F, cholesterol rose with perimenopause. After seeing my lipids at my age 51 physical, I went on a WFPB (whole food plant based) diet. For me, this means zero animal products, no added oil with cooking, no coconut products. I eat occasionally at vegan restaurants where they do use oil. I sometimes eat chocolate. My daily saturated fat intake is approximately 6-10g on a 1800-2000 calorie diet. My fiber intake is usually 40-50g. Protein is 70-100g a day without protein powder. I take 1 tsp psyllium husk/day. No other special supplements other than those recommended for vegans, like B12.
I was always active physically and have always had a normal/healthy BMI.
Before WFPB at age 51:
LDL: 187, HDL: 62, TRI: 109, Total: 271
One year WFPB no statin age 52:
LDL: 122, HDL: 48, TRI 121, Total: 193. ApoB 98, Lp(a) 25
One year WFPB + Statin (Rosuvastatin 5mg) age 53:
LDL: 43, HDL: 49, TRI: 61, Total: 104
I have not experienced any side effects with the statin. I'm very active, weight lifting 3x a week, jump rope, hiking, and cycling.
I'm thrilled with the results of my statin.
I am now looking forward to occasionally adding coconut milk back into my life as well as eating corn chips at Mexican restaurants guilt free.
I personally love being WFPB, so I don't plan to go back to eating animal products.
Hi,
My young adult (20F) kid is trying to break up with her highschool boyfriend (20M) for the second time and he is using his depression and thoughts of unaliving as guilt trips and vague threats to make her give him more chances.
He is really diminishing her natural verve and dazzle and is generally a kind of grumpy negative guy who often belittles her for her bubbly energy and silly spirit. He mocks her and seems to be uncomfortable when she sparkles.
I'm trying to navigate how to support her without overstepping so she stays close and keeps me in her sphere. Yet I'm concerned the self harm comments he makes is something i should do more about.
Unfortunately his parents are problematic in their own ways, but I did consider speaking with them. Or is there another resource I should know about?
I don't know how seriously to take his threats. At best they are super manipulative but also I want to feel like we tried to help him and also protect her from what could potentially destroy her life emotionally if he did actually do something.
I've been weightlifting 3x a week with progressive overload for about 6 weeks now. I do feel stronger and I actually feel incredibly healthy and happy. So I'm not frustrated, just curious.
I would love to see some changes in my body but I don't think anything has changed yet and my kids don't see any changes (or any muscle at all when I flex lol)
My clothes basically fit the same and my weight has not changed.
I am eating a mostly whole food, all vegan diet, like 95% whole food. My protein is around 90-100g most days, but sometimes closer to 70g because I'm a big bean eater which i now know isn't enough to get my protein higher so I add a lot of tofu, nutritional yeast, and tempeh now. I'm considering adding a protein powder but not sure what kind to get because of concerns about heavy metals (i recently learned about a yeast based powder which seems to have no metals - has anyone tried that?)
Main question: when should i be seeing results and at what point is it obvious that it's a diet issue. And would hiring a nutritionist help and if so, how would I find one? Or is it really likely about upping protein? Or could it be my age? 53F maybe things just take more time.?
Firm & silken tofu with some chickpea flour, kale, shredded potato, and a bunch of herbs and spices. Very filling.
Hi,
TLDR:
Q1: Have you been told to avoid lifting after a migraine day when you took higher doses of a triptan? I read that one shouldn't lift because triptans can affect blood pressure. I have lower blood pressure and sometimes get light headed lifting.
Q2a: Have you noticed a connection with lifting heavy esp upper body and a migraine later in the day?
Q2b: Any recommendations on how to overcome that?
Background:
Im 53F and recently joined a gym again after years of being more like a yoga/cardio person while doing lighter weights with bands & kettlebell at home (pls no hate).
I'm living with migraines and trying to figure out how to not trigger them (shoulder/upper body stuff like "around the world" with the kettle bell sometimes sets one off for me).
Also curious if anyone has been warned about lifting the day after taking triptans.
Hi everyone, I am a vegan and I was out to dinner with a neighbor last night who was asking me about being vegan and what I eat... And I was mentioning a bunch of things I've been cooking lately... I personally am obsessed with soy in all forms. So I mentioned some of my favorite recipes.
Anyway, her response was "oh I could never be vegan because I had breast cancer 20 years ago and I have to avoid any foods that have estrogen".
I did not argue with her. I just said "oh that's interesting, and I'm sorry to hear that" ( regarding the breast cancer) and moved on.
My basic understanding is that the fear of estrogen in soy was debunked regarding the estrogen it having any kind of negative impact, and if anything, people who eat more soy are less likely to develop breast cancer or other cancers.
Curious if anybody else has heard the estrogen in soy from someone recently? She's in her 70s, so I'm guessing she is basing this on old information and has not been updated on more recent science.
