Vancouver nursing homes - how does this work?

I’m retired and doing long-term care planning. And trying to understand how transitioning from private-pay to government-subsidized care works in Metro Vancouver.

My plan is to have an "untouchable" fund to pay out of pocket for about 3 years at a dual-license nursing home that offers both private-pay and subsidized LTC beds (ex point grey) My rationale is that research shows the average stay in complex nursing care is roughly 3 years or less.

My specific question is: What happens if it looks like I'm gonna outlive my money while living in a private-pay bed at one of these homes? I assume I get on the LTC waitlist but - is it possible that I could stay at the same facility?

If anyone has family experience into how VCH handles this exact scenario (private-pay to subsidized transition within the same facility), I would really appreciate input. I don't understand whether there is equal chance that you could get a subsidized LTC bed at Point Grey but also at Purdy Pavillion?

Vancouver Nursing Homes - how does this work?

I’m retired and doing long-term care planning. And trying to understand how transitioning from private-pay to government-subsidized care works in Metro Vancouver.

My plan is to have an "untouchable" fund to pay out of pocket for about 3 years at maximum private rates (e.g., $15,000/month) at a dual-license nursing home that offers both private-pay and government-subsidized beds like Villa Cathay, Point Grey, or Weinberg. My rationale is that research shows the average stay in complex nursing care is roughly 3 years or less.

My specific question is: What happens if I outlive my money while living in a private-pay bed at one of these homes?

Do I get prioritized / put next in line for an internal conversion to one of that home’s government-subsidized beds?

Or does VCH put me in general waitlist for any available subsidized bed across the region?

If anyone has family experience into how VCH handles this exact scenario (private-pay to subsidized transition within the same facility), I would really appreciate input.

Overnight list (first time)

I've gone with a friend on her overnight trips . But this one she can't do and I'm doing for 2 nights. I assume I just pack all my own food everything as if I'm camping at someone's house. What are some things I should make sure the pet owner leaves for me? Is a puppy so I want to maintain xonsistency

-meal schedule

-walk schedule

-nap times

-bedtime/wake time

-emergency (I'm sure just their two cell #s)

-home support (think they have cleaners and gardeners that may come in -just want to know when and who)

Seems funny but -im sure they will just have me sleep in spare bedroom?

Should I ask where I will leave used bedding and towels?

They have a gym setup. Should I ask if I can use gym (if not I'll need to leave to use my own gym-)

Some help appreciated! I've done day sitting for this puppy the last 5 days but don't know her morning and night routine

Puppy sitting while family is still in house

I am doing this job for a friend. Puppy is about 8 week old, slightly potty trained. After signing up for 5 day long sits I arrived to find the family would be in and out during the sits. And they have grandchildren visiting. The days they've been in and out have been awful. The puppy schedule is all whacky, just about to nap then kids come in, kids leave open gate and puppy disappears to pee in nearby rooms, kids and grandparents want to have lunch so I'm asked to take puppy outside and stay outside for an hour which puppy does NOT like at all and ends up frustrated and hot and really out of control and bitey. There was one day without the in and out and it was - so absolutely tranquil with feeding on time, potty on time,.play and nap on time. I think owners never had a puppy. I've only fostered puppies not puppy sat but imo they need clear calm structure. I'm sitting outside and bleeding from 2 razor sharp puppy bites. When puppy mom comes home is there some polite way I can say "this was really chaotic for both puppy and me ".

Sorry another post about leopard sharks

In a reply to a post I had made about snokelling + diving in Hawaii a redditor asked whether I had been snorkelling to see the leopard sharks just down the coast from me in La Jolla (I'm Santa Monica,). I was surprised I hadn't heard about it before but when I looked through r/Sandiego it seems people ask about them every couple of years. The redditor from Hawaii said they're in front of the marine room restaurant in August /September. Is that -true? I'm a pretty good open water swimmer just need bit of guidance on how to handle. Where would I go in? better early morning or another time? I would really appreciate any advice to make this happen I love La Jolla, love OW swimming, and love snorkelling

Single people who have relocated for retirement - how is it going?

I hang out here a lot and relocation after retirement seems to be discussed pretty frequently. Would love to hear how it's worked out for single people who have moved to a location they always wanted to live or someplace that's easier to afford. It's been part of my plan but -suddenly wondering how it would really work. I am a renter so trying a temp relocation while having someone stay at my house isn't an option, that's maybe part of the cold feet .

diving cabo in august, thoughts?

Was thinking about blue water diving in cabo, would have to go in August. I personally dislike cabo (as a destination) but assume I could stay San Juan del Cabo and uber to dive in morning (maybe bus back idk). I hate to sound like *everyone who says they love sharks * but I'll be honest that would be the big thing for me. The silky sharks.

Diving and visit Kona without a car

Hi there, I get that most visitors rent a car. But I just need need a break for week or so in August . I'm really keen on the diving. Maybe if time also maybe hike, snorkel, some long distance swimming, relax (the diving will take most of my budget). And maybe come back another time when i can come with family and make more use of a car and explore the whole island. I know I will miss a lot without car bc there aren't many bus options but given my dive focus I think would still be worthwhile. Thoughts?

EDIT : I keep thinking I can somehow make Kona work without a car. I don't think I can. Thanks for reality check. You are all super helpful.

Mastiff feeling uncertain about me

I live in a very close little group of apartment with a central courtyard. My neighbor has a gorgeous big mastiff who I love dearly and who comes over to see me two or three times a day.

On Friday there was a ruckus. I had been pretty badly hurt by something neighbor had left in our communal storage shed. Words flew around.

After I got stitched up when I came back the mastiff came over but instead of being happy he literally sniffed me all over. Oddly intense and then just turned around and left.

I though maybe the literal sight or smell of me bleeding had made him upset. But since then (three days ago) he has only looked at me from a distance confused kind of wary.

Now I think he is of course a guardian and the ruckus left him wondering what the heck the situation is between neighbor and me

I think I should continue to greet him normally but avoid eye contact, avoid calling him to come over etc til he feels more settled .

I feel my usual very outward affection to him would make him even more confused and stressed.

Does that make sense?

I'm sure neighbor and I will patch things but -if we don't, well --he's the best boy and super sensitive and I don't want him stressed .

I think giving him space is a good idea

Such a good boy. Advice welcome-

July 4th in Laguna Beach was just great

I love Laguna Beach, and this year I spent July4th there.

Every year I try to experience July 4th in a different place because I love fireworks, and I love watching people's reactions. Laguna Beach was something special.

By late afternoon, every inch of grass was covered with families and groups of friends and the whole thing was just so chill. Watching the fireworks surrounded by such a happy, relaxed, tightly packed crowd was amazing. No drama, no fights. At least not where I was walking around

And after the fireworks, genuinely surprised to come across a group of Hare Krishna devotees singing and dancing. I've seen Hare Krishna celebrations. This was different. A surfer vibe? Idk. Ive seen celebrations in LA and not the same at all. I joined in, it was impossible not to. Never before have I felt oh wow this stuff is fun.

I hung out and then maybe 11pm the traffic thinned out so I got back to car and I had a quick drive back to LA.

Thanks for everyone here who suggested arriving early and waiting out the rush afterward. What a great experience.

Coast until i get laid off?

Has anyone here deliberately coasted - till they get laid off ? I haven't worked a 40 hour work week in - years. I am a consultant and just didn't work that hard. I considered myself semi retired and figured I would keep it up for another few years. But things have changed . Work just feels very exhausting . I find it intriguing to think i should just gradually slow down untill I get laid off. Has anyone done this and is it psychologically hard to be let go even if it's deliberate? Appreciate any advice.nitneouldngicr me a few more months of pay to stock away and also ease into full time retirement.

Laguna early morning to late night parking ?

Hello it seems crazy to post for parking. But I love Laguna esp main beach and I've never been there for July 4th. I would love to see the fireworks and the flyover - even though I know it will be super crowded.

I'm coming from LA and would plan to d get there early July 4th (7am?). And then just hang out till the traffic clears (11pm?). Any recommendation for a parking lot that will take early arrival and late departure like that? A mile or less from main beach so I can walk there with my gear? Or should I plan to arrive or depart earlier or later?

Oh I would really like the whole time there, a long breakfast at urth and hang out reading and go for some swims and grab some lunch and then dinner and then more swims with the fireworks overhead

I just need to park and then I can do everything on foot. Any ideas?

Small dog taken on exit row seat

Well, the title describes it. 100 pc full flight and woman managed to get on board with her dog in carrier. And get an emergency exit row seat. The FA told her against rules but the passenger insisted the gate agent has told her ok. FA ended up just giving in. I'm a pretty stress free traveller. But partially blocking exit rows I take kind of seriously. Is it something I should put in writing? Feel the FA would have been happy to get passenger disembark but - maybe realized the gate agent screwed up. Idk.

edit: I don't want to get FA in trouble. I def think pax snuck dog on board and lied about GA saying it was ok (FA did not believe it either ). issue is whether to report so that maybe united stresses that exit rules have to be followed . but then FA is affected. so idk.

edit#2: ok have comments that (a) I'm making a big deal of nothing and deliberately trying to get FA in trouble -and (b) it was a clear violation and I should report asap. I won't do anything. I think in retrospect I should have stood up and ofered FA my seat --as a trade to the dog owner pax.
