I built this C-3PO head and focused on getting the finish as close to the film look as I could.

The gold isn’t metallic paint. It’s a transparent tint over chrome.

Here’s the process I used:

  • Gloss black lacquer base (Dupli-Color)
  • 1K gloss clear to push reflectivity (also Dupli-Color)
  • Airbrushed chrome in very light passes (Alclad II)
  • Tamiya clear yellow with a bit of orange for the gold (5:1 mix)
  • 2K automotive clear on top

If the base isn’t perfectly smooth, the chrome shows everything. That was the hardest part. I had to sand back and redo sections more than once.

The tint layer is also unforgiving. Any uneven pass shows immediately.

Inside the head, I added a small system so you can talk to it and it responds in character. I kept that part hidden so it still feels like a real prop first.

If you’ve worked with chrome or candy finishes, I’d like to hear what worked for you.
