New here, Seb + psoriasis - weeping

I will have places on my head and ears that will weep, sometimes picking has precipitated that, but also just sometimes it weeps. I can't totally tell if it is serum from the wound or sebum (it feels like sebum to me) and I hate it so much.

I'm on skyrizi which has helped with the psoriasis aspect, but still struggling with seb 😭

Has anyone tried malaseb? It's a pet product, but it's chlorhexidine and miconozole and seems like it might be worth a shot (can you tell I'm desperate? Lol)

I've used zoryve (very expensive for me due to lack of insurance coverage), skyrizi, Nizoral, all the over the counter shampoos, coal tar, salicylic acid, MCT oil, steroids, etc.

I'm almost 50 and I'm so tired of it 😭

Unpacked my collection and starting on a ginormous dango!

I just moved and I've finally put my dorodangos where they are going to be homed. I'm thinking of putting some pedestals in there because the window that looks in blocks the bottom part.

Also when I was packing, I took every half finished, broken or unsatisfactory dorodango I found, put them in a bag with water and am going to make a megadango!

For my collection, on the left are my shikkui style dangos, including the two most recent ones made by me and my daughter. The bright red one is one that was a gift from Ryo-sensei that he made himself ❤️ my most recent ones from his workshop needs some more polishing with hands - I had a broken dominant hand while trying to make it and so couldn't put much pressure at all when making and I knew I could do more polishing at home

Then I have two nekodangos, with the black one being an experiment with shikkui style and it's not as nice and might eventually get recycled into a new one

Then just some random ones, including two minis. The lightest purple before the one with the big blob on it was made at the workshop in Osaka. The blob one was an attempt to paint a Sakura on with slip on soil I brought home from noboribetsu. I'm trying to not re do that one even though part of me hates it, because it's been suggested to keep it as a mark of progress.

Then I have my graphite dango that took me a long time to get right lol but it's amazing now.

Then there is the first one I made with Noriko's kit, and one that is all sorts of messed up because I tried a bunch of different techniques without scraping to restart. And hiding behind it is an air dry clay with some kaolin on top that's lop sided that I just like the colors that turned out, even though it's wonky

Previously I had them on an open shelf and my kitties liked to test gravity, so I'm happy I have it protected now

For the megadango, it's still drying some because I didn't measure the water, I just threw a bunch in and have been letting it slowly evaporate.

You can see in the pictures when I first started working it, it's still too wet to do much except beginning to compress, because if it sits on my surface, it gets flat there. You want to make sure it will hold it's shape under it's own weight before doing hardcore shaping. I'm going to do more today maybe if it dries enough. But the last picture is where it is right now before it went back into the bag to dry more

I might try and make a video with the shaping, we'll see how I feel lol

Question about cat shelves over bed

I'm thinking of making some cat shelves that go over my bed. The supports would have heavy duty brackets and they would be secured to studs and the wood would be secured to the brackets.

I'm not originally from an earthquake area, but when I moved here, wise advice told me to not put stuff like pictures above my bed so things wouldn't fall in case of earthquake. I assumed shelves were a no go because if they had any load, the load could fall on me.

But would shelves like I am describing be ok? They wouldn't hold anything except transient cats as they walk around, and I'm not worried about my cat falling on me lol

I feel like if they are bolted to studs, it might be ok, but I would like more educated opinions than mine

Renting out lower unit in my house 2b/1b in Crocker/Daly City

My first plan for renters might be falling through, so I'm just putting out some feelers for if there would be interest: (Rent controlled)

It's a 2b/1b lower duplex unit that has a full kitchen, but not much space outside of the bedrooms (very small living area or dining area), but shared access to backyard, with sliding doors to the backyard in each bedroom. Recently renovated, has modern appliances and mini-splits for heating/cooling in the main rooms.

Pets are negotiable, parking can be a bitch and would be on your own, but very convenient to the 14 mission muni line, and like 4 blocks from the Daly City BART station. Ideal for those who don't have cars :D

Looking for ~4k, trash/water included, you would be responsible for electric. You can mooch off our wifi if you don't want your own :)

Community discussion - Dorodango app

I know one of our users has made an app for making dorodangos and posted it here a couple days ago. The bad part of being the only mod is that it can take time for me to see things, especially if I'm working.

I removed the post, and I wanted to bring it up for community discussion because I can see both sides: I love that someone is excited and making things for dorodango, but I also see the potential pitfalls of what is being proposed.

In general, anything that could be monetized (even if it's just a plan in the future) like an app is not ok to post here - that would fall under personal promotional material. Additionally, AI is not welcome here in general.

Overall, I also just worry about stripping the credit away from the masters of the art to filter it into an app using AI, some of the timing things in many ways go against the spirit of the art, and the weirdness of someone who doesn't know how to do something well, trying to teach others. It begins to take on elements of the dreaded cultural appropriation (which I hate to bring up, but is a consideration)

I am open to discussion and community opinions though and would like to discuss.

Edited: thanks for the reinforcement. I agonized a bit over it, because I'm totally someone who can throw myself into things when I like them and be too much, so I'm acutely aware and sympathetic to that tendency.

But I'm also aware of how the world works and as soon as I heard money would be involved, it goes from someone being awkward to someone being opportunistic.

I'm glad to hear there is interest in helping mod too! I'm willing to have up to three other mods, ideally people who have not modded on Reddit before (but I'm not going to say no to experienced mods lol) it is a pretty light workload overall. Very little rule breaking/reporting, friendly userbase. But you can start to learn the tools and stuff without it taking more than 10-20 min a week, maximum

Trying to build 6' floating shelves - would like opinions on bracing and shelf material

I have three floating brackets (one side of the bracket anchored to stud, the other with drywall anchor) that are 33-34" apart, 12" depth, and am hoping for maybe a 1" shelf on each. The brackets are heavy duty and should be able to hold the weight, but I'm worried about sagging. Should I add more brackets or are the ones I've used sufficient? (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CSFDWB1F?th=1 are the brackets for reference)

Secondly, we were originally going to put a "lack" shelf from IKEA on the brackets, but the thickness is more than we really want. I was looking at something like this: https://www.homedepot.com/p/1-in-x-12-in-x-8-ft-Primed-Pine-Finger-Joint-Board-PFJB1128/203422125 with cutting it down to 6 ft each. It's a primed 1" thick pine board.

The distance between brackets is ~33". It's right on the border of what google says would be acceptable for bracing, but I haven't found an answer that is specific to my needs when searching.

Does this sound reasonable? Other suggestions? I do have more studs I could utilize for more brackets, but of course it would be nice to not need more!

Edited for clarity:

There are three brackets currently. Each bracket has four holes that are spaced wider than a stud, so I secured the right side holes to the center of the stud, and the left side holes are drywall anchored, as was recommended by a lot of the internet when you have things that are wider than a single stud. So each bracket has one half of it anchored to the stud.

Mobile plasma cutting?

Is that a thing here? Anyone who can do that sort of work willing to travel? I'm in Daly City (barely, two blocks from the city lol) and trying to cut some holes in wrought iron/steel and it's slow going lol

Tool for cutting through steel/wrought iron?

Hi, I have an iron security door at my new house and I am trying to replace the lock. The hole is a little too small for the new lock so I'm trying to open the hole more. I've been using my drill and metal carbide bur bits for my drill.

It's slow work lol I'm looking for better suggestions!

I'm willing to buy a tool if it's under 50, or I can rent tools from home Depot.

I'm somewhat handy, but haven't used many tools since I was a kid in shop class

The two top holes are the amount I need widened and only at two parts, the third indent is to just widen the cut out on the left so I don't have to be perfect in position.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated

Edited to add: thanks for all the suggestions!

Going slower on my drill has helped and I'm getting a decent quality coarse file to help with the widening of the work already done. I'm more than halfway there!

Accessing the wiki/community guide

Reddit has changed how some of the mod tools work, so I've not been able to get a menubar across the top with a link to the wiki, but I set up so there's a link to the wiki in the community guide in the toolbar on the right.

If you would like to add the the wiki or help mod and give more attention to the sub, let me know. It's a very low-work sub overall, being a niche hobby and so people who have never been a mod before are welcome to join.

Hopefully having the wiki more accessible to people will help them. It answers some of the frequent problems people have.

[GA] -inner sunset San Francisco - Fluval 407, nice led light bar and heater

I still have the fluval 407, a heater that went in my 75 gal and the lights for that tank (programmable, with remote)

First come first served, it's now outside my old house and anyone can pick it up. If it's not picked up next time I go back there in a couple days, it will be tossed!

You will need a car, it's on top of Mount Sutro and buses don't go all the way up

Unique storage closet for a Doctor Who fan - Forest Knolls/Mount Sutro

Pickup is either today between 3-7pm or tomorrow time TBD

This is a customized IKEA closet to look like a TARDIS (it's bigger on the inside) all the shelves pull out and there is one drawer. You would likely need a truck and two people to carry it out, I am down a set of stairs.

There is a varnish stain on the very bottom shelf

Reply or DM if interested

Public interpretation of medical issues rant

I am very frustrated with the message that the general public has heard from the correct critiques of US maternity care. We do have issues with institutional racism, and maternal mortality, absolutely. There are things we need to improve as a system and I'm all for doing that.

But I see so many lay people take the wrong messages away from this awareness of flaws. It makes people hostile and assuming the worst when they come in, and affects how they make decisions.

Maternal mortality in the US is not great. Not all of it is from L&D direct causes - suicide and homicide are a significant reason why the US maternal mortality is high. That goes moreso for black mothers because they are dealing with systemic racism on top of it all. And we talk about how high the c/s rate is, but the truth is we don't know really what the "optimal" rate of c/s should be, we just guess at it, and there are so many confounding factors like age at delivery, chronic health conditions etc.

But the answer to this is not to eschew doctors and medical care, or be oppositional at all times with people or ignore the education that physicians and others have. They are taking metrics they don't understand well and then applying them incorrectly which likely make the outcomes worse. And it's so frustrating.

For example, I know continuous fetal monitoring isn't well correlated with outcomes, but that's mostly because category II strips are hard to determine just how bad it is going to be. We're reasonably sure with category I that the baby is ok. And Category III is pretty clear that the baby is in trouble. But the general public seems to take away the message that there is zero use for fetal monitoring and no data from it is reliable. (please correct me if I'm wrong OB, but from a NICU perspective, category III strips do definitely correlate with babies in trouble)

And then we get a baby who had a flat strip prior to birth (SVD) and has almost no brain activity, because the mom didn't want to get a c/s because she "knows" there are too many c/s and she "knows" fetal monitoring is worthless, so she continues laboring because the baby isn't actively decel'ing, and she is not white so she "knows" the doctors aren't giving her good care because of that.

Now she can't face the possibility that her decision to avoid the "unnecessary" c/s has ended with her child being neurologically devastated. (and honestly, I would worry about suicide in those cases)

It's frustrating and disheartening, especially when you see the babies taking the brunt of this dunning-kruger and I just needed to preach to the choir a little and feel less alone. I'm heartbroken for the families, the babies, and the mothers who think they are doing the right thing but just aren't hearing the right message.

But especially the baby who is motionless with low voltage eeg, non-reactive pupils, now post-cooling, who will likely never open their eyes and see the world.

I don't know how to fix it and it is horrible. 😞

▲ 6 r/urushi

I've been working with urushi for over a year now with kintsugi, and my last trip to Japan I took a class on maki-e, and I was thinking of trying to make some basic lacquerware myself. Anyone do this?

I have some wood pieces to practice with and have tried to watch some videos on how it is done and it seems like it is:

*A later of slightly thinned urushi

*Layer of washi paper with nori urushi on top

*Layer of urushi

*Layer of clay ? + urushi Some things make it look like it's *maybe tonoko powder in that layer

*More urushi

*More urushi

*More urushi

If I wanted to put in a maki-e design, it would be in between the last few urushi layers, another layer of clay urushi maybe? More layers and of course, all the sanding in the world lol

Anyone have any good websites for the steps? Or the type of washi used? Nori urushi is with rice flour instead of wheat, correct?

I have a lot of aquarium supplies I don't want to move. Some of them need cleaned. All are free to good home (though I never object to 5 bucks or something as a donation LOL)

75g acrylic tank - needs cleaned and has one side painted black (which should be removable)

307 and 407 fluval (would need new sponges)

python water changer

bug bites fish food

aquarium chemicals

some aragonite

driftwood, coral pieces

I have an aquarium stand too, if you want it

You would need to be able to transport them yourself.

Basically, if you need something for your fish in the city, please come and take it from my stuff!

Local pickup only and you must be able to get it up a set of stairs (we can help, but it's big!)

My electric blue acaras passed away and my tank has been sitting empty (and dirty 😞 ) and I'm getting ready to move and don't want to move my fish stuff.

I have:

75g acrylic tank - it is dirty and needs cleaned, one side was painted with black acrylic paint to block out sunlight

30g fluval bow front tank with included filter/pump setup

Fluval 306 Works well, was regularly maintained before the fishes passed

Fluval 407 I think it works - there was a leak in a hose and I have the replacement hose but never set it up to use so I can't guarantee it works

Python water changer

Big tub of "Bug bites" food for EBAs or other similar fish

Air compressor with multi-array

Seachem Safe container that is partially used

pH Up and Down unused

Fish antibiotics and treatments - various

some driftwood and coral

an unused brine shrimp hatchery

floating rings (non traditional, but they do float and can contain plants)

other things I've not gone through yet.

Think of it like a garage sale that's free! If you want to give a donation towards my moving expenses, I won't object but really I just don't want to move them to the new place.

Pickup would be before May 23, which is when the junk company will be coming to get rid of everything I can't

Inner Sunset area, car is necessary.
