Take that, computer!

(I didn't get to fix the score thing, but still beat it today.)

Oh, and happy National Aviation Day to all who celebrate.

National Fajita Day!

¡Olé!

And I'm getting a little tired of not being able to beat my own computer program. I'm seriously thinking about having the fluxometer be based not on the computer best, but on an average of the top two or three.

By the way, the computer's answer for today was: >!ear → recommendation → recommendations!<

Fluxis Redux 2026-08-16

Score 21 / Fluxometer 17

coaster → >!ergonomic!< → >!ergonomic!< → >!ergonomic!< → coaster

https://daylightdata.net/fluxis-app/

I thought about fixing it so the hat trick wouldn't be possible, but it was the only way I could beat the comptuer score, so I left it.

Plus, the juxtaposition of the hat trick word to the seed word made me chuckle. Yes, I'm easily amused.

It's Julia Child's birthday, but neither of those words made as fun of a word as the seed word as Omelette.

It's also mother's Day in Costa Rica, and a bunch of other countries. It's interesting how many different mother's days there are around the world.

Fluxis Redux for Aug 12, Birthday of Buck Owens

Fluxis Redux 2026-08-12

Score 12 — Hard Mode!

owens → >!selection!< → >!election!< → >!narrow!< → owens

https://daylightdata.net/fluxis-app/

I made a couple of changes to the game. I made the type for the rules bigger so it's easier to see when playing on a phone, after a request from this group.

I also got rid of the computer score. It just seemed pointless. What do you think? Is it better with it gone?

Also, if you don't know, Buck Owens was country music star back when country music was, well, let's say a bigger tent.

He sang one of the great song lyrics of all time:

>Roses are red and violets are purple
Sugar's sweet and so is maple surple

I was thinking about sesquicentennial because of Colorado's recent celebration, so the first and second words came to me pretty quickly.

Happy World Lion Day. I almost didn't use it because I saw that the day happens to be the birthday of the guy who founded it, but I decided to let it slide because he and his wife are doing good work.

Itching and scratching

Two things. One is, I'm having a relapse of back pain. The ideas of Dr. Sarno work better for me than anything else, but it doesn't guarantee that you'll be pain free for life. Luckily it doesn't cripple me as much or for nearly as long as it once did.

Two is that I just learned why we scratch when we have an itch.

When you have an itch, it's a signal that's sent to your brain that there's an irritation. Your nervous system then informs you. Then you decide what to do about it. Often you decide to scratch. But the scratching doesn't have anything to do with the itching. When you scratch you are just sending a different signal to your brain. Scratching is actually a kind of pain.

Try this: Someplace where it doesn't itch on your body right now, go scratch it. I just tried this. It hurts!

So when you scratch you're just sending a signal through your nervous system to your brain that you have pain in the place where before you had irritation. That pain overwhelms the itchy feeling, so it doesn't seem like it's itchy. It is, it's just been masked.

For some reason that helps me think about my back pain. It's just a signal that is going through my nervous system. What makes it worse is if I react to that pain as if there's something wrong, and then I hold myself super stiffly and I don't breath properly, and then I'm screwed and if I don't do anything I'll have back pain that will last for weeks. But if I can hold it in my head, and this is super hard for me, for anyone really, that the pain isn't actually a cause for alarm, then I can get through it more quickly.

Anyway, that helps me. Maybe it will be helpful for you, too.

It's national Watermelon Day, but it seems like using that word would make it too easy, so I went with the one that the comptuer generated. There's probably a longer word that works than >!erudite!<, but I like that word so I went with it.

Hope you all have a great work week!

Fluxis for the first day of August, Colorado Day!

Fluxis Redux 2026-08-01

Score 14 / Fluxometer 5

colorado → >!adorable!< → >!eccentric!< → >!eccentric!< → colorado

https://daylightdata.net/fluxis-app/

So, I'm a Colorado native. And I'm old enough to remember the celebration for when Colorado turned 100, and that was 50 years ago. Weird to think that I've experienced something like a third of the life of the state.

Now it is the sesquicentennial of the state that I love.

I also love "sesqui" as a prefix, which goes before one of my all-time favorite words: sesquipedalian. Hmmm. I'm going to have to use that word soon.

Colorado is a great state. If you haven't been, I recommend a visit. If you go to a restaurant in the mountains or a game at Coors Field, just be aware that "Rocky Mountain Oysters" are not seafood and are pretty gross. The trivia here is that the food is made up of what you get when you turn a bull into a steer. 😬

Score 9 / Fluxometer 8 — beat the machine ⚡

avocado → >!doozy!< → >!doozy!< → >!yucca!<

https://daylightdata.net/fluxis-app/

Happy National Avocado Day!

I thought that'd be a fun word to use because it's so handy to use when we need more vowels that consonants, so of course the first rule had to be more consonants than vowels!

(Making this puzzle every day is fun, but it might be turning me into something of a mild form of sadist!)

Of course, I don't make it that hard because I never play what the computer shows as a possible answer. By the way for today, that is>!ongoing → going → gamma!<

Have a great Friday, and if you are looking for a deal on some guac, there are a lot of deals to be had!
