Chinese version X4 Pro: any experience?

Hi! I don’t have any xteink at all and am considering the X4 Pro. I was wondering if anyone here got a Chinese version of the X4 Pro (from taobao or aliexpress maybe) and can tell me if it’s easy to switch to English? Is the stock OS enough? I’m not tech-savvy so idk if I’ll be able to do any of the crosspoint/crossink stuff. I already have epubs so ideally I just need to be able to sideload. Oh, and are the buttons noisy? Any info would be much appreciated, thank you!

Regular or dark mode: which is better for eyesight when reading in a dark room? which do you prefer?

Normally I switch to dark mode at night but few days ago I forgot and kept reading in the regular mode. I didn’t feel any difference in terms of eye strain or anything so it made me wonder… which is actually better for eyesight health in the long run? specifically for reading in a dark environment

Just got my new ereader case, chuffed to bits!

It's actually a case for 6" kindles but I'm happy it fits my pocketbook verse pro color as well 😄

edit to add description of images: it’s an ereader case cover featuring fourth wing. detachable via magnetic ring. case is clear so can put insert. other pics show the built-in stand function in portrait and landscape orientations and cutout holes for kindle model but compatible with pocketbook verse.

Detachable magnetic cover case for Pocketbook / Kindle

TLDR - Cases for 6” Kindles are rather compatible with Pocketbook Verse models. Beware, not perfect but it fits.

The edges of my official pocketbook case for Pocketbook Verse Pro Color was flaking off all along the edges after only a couple months so I ordered a new case. It’s finally arrived and I’m chuffed to bits! It’s actually meant for 6-inch Kindles but I took a chance and…it fits! I love that it could do so much! It was under $10 so even if it breaks down after a few months, it’ll still have been worth the happiness imo. I figured I’d make this post since there are so few options for cases on the market for Pocketbook Verse users.

Pros:
-The back is a clear case
-Which I can add inserts to decorate myself
-The front cover is nice and sturdy to protect the screen
-Which can be flipped 360 degrees, all the way to the back
-The front cover has 2 ridges on the inside to adjust angle when using the built-in stand mode
-Which I can use in both landscape or portrait orientation
-And can use as displaying on a cabinet when I’m not reading (like a picture frame to showcase book cover)
-I can fully detach the cover
-Add a magnetic pop socket
-I can even add the pop socket with the cover still on (not ideal)
-The buttons are still usable, thank goodness
-The bottom comes with 3 hole cut-outs (meant for kindle), one of which aligns with the USB-C port
-It’s thicker than the official pocketbook case but still fits in my zipped padded pouch

Cons:
-Mine doesn’t have the auto-sleep/wake when open/close. (Other kindle case options have that though so it’s out there if you prefer that.)
-Not exactly a con but worth mentioning: The case is a little loose but it FITS. The four corners and left/right sides are held in place nicely. However, the pocketbook doesn’t ‘fill in’ the top/bottom parts. Despite this somewhat looseness, it doesn’t fall out unless I actually pry it apart. Adding an insert helps make it fit more snugly.

Owning ereader = Read more = Desire to buy physical books = Miniature library

Apparently owning an ereader (Pocketbook Verse Pro Color 6inch screen) means I sometimes go online for book recommendations and now my algorithm feeds me special edition book ads. As someone who has always loved physical books and wanted a home library, I found myself wanting to buy physical books more and more. But that's a-whole-nother money-consuming rabbit hole I shouldn't go down.

I processed my thoughts and came to the conclusion that I just wanted to physically SEE how many books I’ve finished reading, on a shelf. And this $5 miniature bookshelf idea brought my library dream to life. Every time I finish reading a book in my ereader, I add a miniature book to my miniature bookshelf. I can’t believe I’ve read so much in the past 2 months! 20 books in 2 months doesn't sound like a lot to me but when I see it on the shelf like that, it makes me happy :)

Are these the same story?

Hi all, I’ve seen the recent manhwa adaptation being recommended recently and want to read the novel. So I went searching and I’m so confused. One is called “Atonement, for your Cruelty” and the other is “The Cruelty of Salvation”.
One stars Oscar/Seo Ah and the other stars Noah/Olivia.
If the two titles were written by different authors, I would understand that they’re different but they’re both by the same author, Han Bo Yeon.
Does anyone have any info on if these are meant to be the same story or… not? TIA!

I’ve been stupid for so long 😅

Pictured is my Pocketbook Verse Pro Color. I usually use it how it’s intended, portrait orientation, buttons on the bottom. Recently my wrist has been hurting and I’ve been thinking that “no wonder 7inch screen ereaders have buttons on the side, that seems more ergonomic.”
Then it hit me I can do the same by using landscape mode 😂🤣 Now my buttons are on the side too! 🥳
So I was wondering what are some things that you discovered about your ereader (any brand, any model) that made your life infinitely better?

Did this happen to you too? pocketbook case

Hi all, so I’ve had my Pocketbook Verse Pro Color for over a month now. Been using it a few hours a day, daily. I have the official pocketbook black shell case with the front cover thing (see pic). The edges have been fraying/falling off little by little. For those of you that have/had it too, I was wondering how long until it fully disintegrates on me? And what cases did you get after?

What book are they referring to? 22:15-22:50

Does anyone know which author these ladies in the podcast are referring to around 22:15-23:00.

DIY’ed cover protector

So I was complaining to a friend about how I’ve been reading on my pocketbook on average 2-3hours a day, and the cover’s edges have started to flake off. Figured as much, it’s faux leather afterall. Friend disappeared into their craft room for about 10min and came back out with the solution shown in the attached image. I’m so happy! Not only is the pocketbook cover protected, but I could change out the cover design if I want to. It’s basically just a plastic book cover protector. Thought I’d share incase anyone’s cases are flaking off at the edges too. (Gothikana was the book I recently finished and was raving to them about. lol )
I’ll see if I can add a short video in the comments.

Should I buy the book? (not special edition)

Hi all, so I already have the e-book version of Fourth Wing. I haven’t read it yet because when I saw the map in the beginning on my 6inch ereader, I was just… “woahhh”. I’m in Thailand and i found this seller selling a regular paperback version. Should I buy the physical book? Is it worth it?

How long does it take to charge your e-readers?

This is my first time owning an ereader so I keep being amazed with everything I discover along the way. I have Pocketbook’s Verse Pro Color.
I went to charge it earlier today and was amazed it took one hour to charge from 29% to 99%, which means it’ll most likely take less than 2hrs to charge from 0-100%. That’s insanely fast 🤯😆
So I was wondering how fast/slow does it take to charge other models/brands?

How to get rid of page gaps?

Hi y’all! Pictured above is my Verse Pro Color. I’ve been super happy reading novels and manhwa on it. This page gap is a little annoying though. Does anyone know how I can get rid of it (on the pocketbook stock OS)? I tried adjusting all the settings under settings > margins cropping but to no avail. I tried KOreader and KOreader did get rid of the page gap but I don’t want to use KOreader because there’s so much more ghosting on there. I prefer pocketbook’s stock OS. If I can’t fix the issue then I’ll just continue reading with these page gaps but I figured I should at least ask someone on here first 😅 Thanks for taking the time to read this; hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Any ideas what happens after the ending?

So I finally just finished reading this [Fallen Fruit under the paradise] and gosh… the blackest black flag i’ve ever read. also… there is no romance. someone recommended it to me saying it’s dark romance but nope. anyway, im here to ask those that have finished the story as well… what did you think about the ending?

I’m struggling to make sense of what happens after that. spoiler alert…. look away if u havent read it…………. im on phone and cant do spoiler formatting………… anyway, so FL basically ends up mentally insane. ML gets the baby, his heir. seems like his new obsession is the baby? but he’s still keeping FL alive… im confused with the ending. i guess i can just chalk it up to ML just being f’d up and insane but i wonder if there’s more that someone else can interpret for me. thank you all!

Hand Strap for pocketbook verse (pro color) ?

Hi again everyone! I recently got my first ever e-reader, the Pocketbook Verse Pro Color (6inch) and am finding it a little uncomfortable holding while laying down in bed. I THINK what I need is a hand strap of some kind. The common ones I see on Shopee (Asian Amazon) are the three pictured in image 1. I've tried to find some info on here without much luck so thought I'd make this post to ask what everyone else is using or has used, what works and what doesn't. So I know which one to get.

Image 2 shows the pocketbook verse pro color that i have. my concern is that the corners are more rounded than the general ereader out there so the straps might not work, correct me if i'm wrong. And ideally I'd like a strap that would work with the case I currently have, which is pocketbook's official flip case. Pop sockets seem to be popular among users that use clear cases but I'd rather have my screen protected with a flip cover than leave it exposed. Choice A concerns me in that... will the 'hook' parts not create pressure and damage the screen?

I'm open to other ideas as well, thank you all!

Greatest of All Time: Single books/Series?

Hi all! I'm someone who reads a lot of korean manhwa/webtoon romantasies but I sort of want to venture into novels. I'm not looking for recommendations for new trending titles because that seems easier to find... but more like... (embarrassed to say this but it's all I know) the Twilight series. Something that's been around for a long time and many people already know and love.
Individual books are great but I'll take recs for series too. Any help for this newbie would be much appreciated. THANK YOU!

Why are more people not raving about Pocketbook? I LOVE IT!

Pocketbook Verse Pro Color - Complete review from a First time e-reader user (caregiver edition)

TLDR: I love it so much! but still figuring some stuff out. This post will cover why I ended up choosing Pocketbook, my first impressions + after some usage, accepted regrets, caregiver thoughts, final thoughts, a trick for color enhancement, and things I didn’t know I’d come to love about it. Images attached are referenced below accordingly.

Most posts/reviews out there compare their new e-readers to ones they’ve used before in the past. But my review is coming from someone (mid30’s) who reads some physical books, but mostly web novels and colored manhwa/webtoons on the computer/phone. (I used to read manga but transitioned more to webtoons.) A friend got an e-reader and I was influenced to get one to save my aging eyesight.

Why Pocketbook? Why color not b/w?
Color because I read colored manhwa/webtoons just as much as novels. Availability in my region was a main deciding factor and this YouTube review narrowed things down further. Rank #2 was PB Era Color #3 was Boox Go7 Color. Pocketbook vs Boox. Then, what felt like a good fit to a tech-illiterate person like myself. Android stuff felt too complicated. Despite all of y’all telling me in my last post that I should go for the 7inch PB Era Color; I went for the more budget-friendly 6inch option, and coincidentally the Era was out of stock, lol.

First Impressions + After Some Usage
Wow, so beautiful! Wow, it’s indeed dark (as expected). With front light on, seems no different from a laptop/phone screen, a bit easier on the eyes. Sideloading EPUBs and CBZs was easy. It took me realistically less than half an hour to get things set up and start reading. No issues reading novels. Sure, people say B/W ereaders are better but I have nothing to compare to. I just compare to physical books and it’s just as clear, even better because I can adjust text size, line spacing etc (image 2). Reading manhwa, out of the box it felt so faded as if it’s black and white, not color. (Spoiler alert, it got better on its own after some use as if it needed some time to ‘wake up’ from being in the box on the shelf for so long + I figured some stuff out. Image 3).  The refresh/flashing stings my eyes. I turned it off completely. Refresh rate: Never. There’s no ghosting that I could see. Reading novels feels so peaceful now. Super happy! Manhwa, even with refresh set to never, it still refreshes after every ‘page’. As I understand it, it’s normal because that’s how e-readers render images. Fine. I installed KOreader to see if I can get my colored manhwa reading experience to be better. I’ve included a comparison table (image 4). Comment if you have questions. KOreader is better at a few factors but not enough for me to abandon Pocketbook’s stock operating system, especially when ghosting is worse on KOreader (image5). Also, the refresh flashing is very prominent in a dark environment, but I noticed I tolerate it better in a well-lit environment. After more usage, I’ve gotten quite used to it. It’s still a little frustrating, but tolerable. I don’t have audiobooks but I tested the text-to-speech feature with Bluetooth earphones and wow, it’s great! Not 100% like a person reading but I can see myself trying it out more in the future.

Accepted Regrets/Still figuring out
I’m planning on uninstalling KOreader and just fully going back to stock OS. With that in mind, I wish my colored manhwa/webtoon reading experience was better. Specifically wanting there to be an option of playing the next chapter after finishing one, without having to keep going back to the file directory page. (I found a workaround. Basically combined the individual chapter cbz files into one single cbz file.) Also wish it would render the webtoon images’ quality/sharpness better since KOreader can do it, clearly the device is capable (image 6), so I don’t understand why it won’t. (Edit: 300ppi for black and white render, 150ppi color render. I didn’t understand this in the specs, now I do.) If anyone already happily reading webtoons on their color e-reader knows the best settings in pocketbook, please let me know. Maybe I still haven’t fully figured it out. Also, my device is advertised as 16GB storage but it’s actually 13GB usable storage. That’s almost a 20% difference, considered significant to me. I feel slighted but what can I do. It is what it is.

Caregiver Thoughts
I doubt anyone will care much about this following part, but I thought I’d add it since I haven’t seen it in any other reviews I had come across in my research. As a full-time caregiver, I sometimes have to monitor my patient while they sleep, bedside. I don’t need to be active every single minute so reading is a good way to occupy the time. I wouldn’t consider the clicking of the physical page turn buttons loud in a normal lay person setting but due to the nature of my work, it is considered obviously loud and disrupts my patient’s rest/sleep. Same with the flashing of the screen during refreshes, specifically in a dark room. So I don’t read manhwas/webtoons where page turning and refresh rate are high. Instead, I read novels with the refresh rate set to NEVER and tap the screen to turn pages.

Final Thoughts
I’m so happy with my first ever e-reader! I went through stages where I felt like maybe I should’ve gotten a bigger screen for the long run but after holding it in one hand while reading for long periods of time, my wrist hurts a bit. So weight does matter too. The 6inch is perfect for me. Lighter, smaller. No issues with novels since it’s similar in size to a smaller physical book (image 7). Webtoons are designed to be read on phones anyway so the 6inch screen is plenty bigger. 7inch might be too ‘in my face’. Overall, it does everything I want: save eyesight health while enjoying my favorite hobby; reading novels and manhwas. I might prefer a larger screen years from now when I get older. If this pocketbook lasts me at least 3+ years, I’ll think it’s worth it. Question for people: at what age did you find yourself upgrading to a larger screen and how much larger?

Trick for better color/resolution perception:
I read text novels with frontlight brightness ON about 10-15%. Any more and it stings my eyes. With colored content, increasing brightness increases color clarity and image definition (image 8). So I use about 30% brightness for colored content at any given time although in a very well sunlit room I can get away without using the frontlight at all (image 1).

Things I Love!
The sleep icon is so cute! (image 9)
I set my OFF screen to “Book Cover” and set the ereader on a phone stand in the house when I’m not using it. It acts like a picture frame. I love it! (image 1)
I’m generally not tech-savvy for a millennial but I got to learn so many techy things from this experience.
I gained new hobbies: 1) collecting TBR books and 2) cataloging my book collection and TBR list on Google Sheets. Haha

PS. Thank you to everyone who helped me along the way! Feel free to comment/DM questions. No questions are stupid questions. I’m happy to test/take pics as well. :)

Shiseido Water in Lip Balm reviews

I've used both extensively. Made by Shiseido, Japan. Both from Shopee but I think Yesstyle also has it. At first I bought the pink sakura one because it's cute. Just felt like any other lip balm so I didn't think much of it. Standard, no muss no fuss. Great for a dry person like me who applies all day, multiple times a day, everyday. I even repurchased. When I ordered the seecond time, I figured I'd also try the blue one with the snowflake. Apparently made using Hokkaido water or something. I just thought it was a gimmick for advertisement but there's a big difference! Initially I didn't like it because it didn't glide well on application. Felt slightly tacky but not sticky. However... I ate some chips with crumbs on my lips, went to wash my face/ rinse my mouth... patted dry with towel. I came back and i still felt the lip balm on my lips!!!! It stayed on despite all the water exposure! (this doesn't happen when i use normal vaseline lip therapy). Anyway, I started to really test it out some more and I really see a difference. If i have super chapped lips then it helps. If i know i wont be eating anything soon or i'll be out doing stuff all day, i'll put it on and i dont need to reapply multiple times. It's amazing. Now i'm interested to try/collect the other two: the regular one and the one with UV spf. If anyone has tried those other two, please let me know your thoughts. Have a great weekend y'all!

Pocketbook warnings?

Hello Pocketbook users! My first ever e-reader (pocketbook verse pro color) is due to arrive in a couple of days. I’m here to ask if you have anything to warn me about or to look out for. Honestly, if you think “this is common knowledge, i don’t need to comment this” then please do comment anyway. It’s my first time and I’m lowkey scared I’ll break the fragile screen, or do something wrong. A few things I’ve compiled are as listed below. If you’d like to expand on any point or add anything, please PLEASE let me know! Thank you so much!!

  1. fragile screen - be very careful of screen. i ordered the standard case for it already but will buy a cushioned sleeve/pouch too. i read recently someone breaking their screen from just trying to wipe/clean it. is it really that fragile?

  2. ghosting - refresh screen

  3. battery - battery percentage will go down fast initially due to a lot of setting up. after things settle, it should last a long time.

  4. install KOreader - because it’s apparently better than what comes with the device

  5. darkness - color ereader can be dark, use frontlight to help

  6. ???

All the points above are things I wouldn’t have known if I didn’t read all of y’all’s posts here on reddit. So thank you! please do let me know if there’s anything else you’d like to warn me about or recommend i know/do. Hope you have a great rest of your week!

HakuNeko timeout?

I’ve attached 3 images. I recently started using Hakuneko the past few days. Downloaded about 100 chapters per day in prep for my incoming e-reader and now this happens. The red triangle of doom. Something about a timeout? Does anyone know why this is happening and how can I fix it?
