Door can be pushed open even when locked. Need advice on what to adjust.
Hi everyone,
I have an exterior/security door with a multi-point locking system. The problem is that when I close the door, I can still push it open from the outside.
I’ve attached photos of the door and the locking mechanism.
A few things I noticed:
- The door has multiple locking bolts.
- The top piece in the frame appears to be related to an electric opener and is just a plastic cap, so I don't think that's the main issue.
- The side of the frame is covered when the door is closed, so I can't see exactly how deeply the bolts are entering the strike openings.
- I'm wondering whether the door has dropped/sagged slightly and is now vertically misaligned, causing the bolts not to engage deeply enough.
- I'm also wondering whether I should adjust the strike plate, the hinges, or the locking mechanism itself.
What would you recommend checking first?
Is there a way to determine whether the door is too high/low or whether the strike plate needs adjustment without removing the frame cover?
I'd appreciate any advice on what to adjust and, ideally, which screws/parts I should be looking at.
Thanks!
