Finally beat Returnal... a few quick thoughts

65 hours and 102 deaths later, I've finally beaten this game.

Did i git gud? I definitely got better, but it was really just a lucky run in the end. I had a level 24 EPD, a couple sheild consumables, and an astronaut figurine. That and I was able to pick up a couple health drops while i was running around like a dipshit trying not to get killed. With all of that, i beat the final boss on the fourth try. The EPD made short work of it, but the boss was the easy part. The hard part was getting to him.

And that's probably my biggest issue. When i say i got lucky, I'm not kidding. I went through dozens and dozens of runs gearing up in B4 only to get to B6 and get clapped by massive difficulty spikes from gank squads, big bads, and twisty random layouts. Of the four times i made it to the boss, i had a pretty straight shot where i could just push forward on L3 and run past smaller groups of standard enemies. I guess that's the way roguelites are, but it didn't make it any less frustrating (for me).

As far as the ending. I'll just say it was.... abrupt. I pretty much called what was coming to a point, but it brings up more questions than answers (which i understand are covered more in the tower). But after spending so much time and effort trying to beat what is one of the hardest games I've ever played, I'd have liked more.

As far as the story, it meh. I was intrigued about the loop , but the more lore i unlocked, it seemed to me they were trying to make some kind of smart, deep, lovecraftian tale that ultimately made no sense. Just my opinion.

Did i love it? Sometimes. Did i hate it? Sometimes. The gameplay and movement are awesome, as are the ambience and visuals. But the luck element really irked my liver an awful lot.

Just my quick thoughts, which weren't as quick as anticipated lol

Biome 3 is killing this game for me

I'm sure I'll get downvoted or something of the sort, but wanted to get this off my chest.

I'm no stranger to tough, even frustrating games. Played a lot of souls likes, beat them all solo, even the bosses. I know this is an entirely different kind of game, but I haven't been this aggravated in a long time.

Finally beat biome 2 and get to 3. Yay! Little did i know that it was a breeding ground for gravity deaths, aoe gank squads, and a ridiculously long boss run.

Gotten to the point where I'm getting thoroughly sick of seeing the landing area because, thanks to the constantly shifting maps, sometimes i find the shortcut to 3, sometimes i have to suck it up and travel to 2 instead. This wouldn't be too bad if it weren't for the random difficulty spikes resulting from , well, the randomness. It makes scavenging for cool weapons, etc seem futile because you can't take them with you.

I was (mostly) having fun but it's getting to the point where I'm wondering if i just suck or if, despite the hype and genuine fanbase love for this game, I'm starting to feel that the devs just employed ass game design with the express purpose of kicking players in the balls. (That's sure to get downvotes and get gud en masse, but whatever).

Things weren't all sunshine and unicorn shit up to this point, but biome 3 can really kiss my ass.

End rant.

Yes. Something most definitely went wrong.

I am so fed up with this brand and company, it's not even funny.

The app in particular has been a broken disgrace since launch. I just want to redeem some points into a gift card, but it says i have to go to rewards catalog. Rewards catalog says i have to be on console or the app. Lol

It's astounding how trash Microsoft is yet still continues to make money hand over fist.

Loved it!!!

I was looking forward to this game's release when it was first revealed, then ubisoft and a bad launch happened. Killed the enthusiasm a little, but I'd always kept my eye on it. Now that they've patched everything that should have been corrected before release, the game is fantastic.

Massive really nailed the SW vibe, and the visuals are oftentimes stunning with some of the best lighting I've seen in the game. Doesn't hurt that the HDR implementation is awesome.

I own the game on PS5, but found the performance to be subpar; a common complaint as I understand it, so I ended up playing it on XSX. The VRR on the Xbox (one of the things the Series X does well) smoothed out the few portions of the game that chugged along (the two main hubs in Toshara and Tatooine, to be exact), which vastly improved the experience.

It's really a shame that it was something of a shotgun release. Had it shipped in the state that it's in now (and if Ubi didn't overcharge for DLC and offer a ridiculously priced premium edition), I think this game would have done much, much better. As it stands now, doesn't look like we're getting another one, and that's a bummer.

So yeah, really enjoyed this one. Was one of those games that I couldn't wait to get back to and play, and I do see myself running through it again sometime in the future. I left some stuff on the table, but all told got about 55 hours out of it between the main quest, lots of contracts (although there are a bunch more), and side quests.

Akiva is awful

Title says it all.

I'm really enjoying the game, but this planet is ass. It's entirely too much of a pain in the ass to get anywhere, and there are hardly any fast travel points.

I'm looking at the map more than I'm driving my speeder to get from A to B.

Ridiculous.

Just finished mixtape.

I liked it a lot. Short? Yes. Walking sim? Yes. I like the break from 100 hour check the boxes games, and this one fit the bill.

There are a ton of recent 1 star reviews on the x box store, each more unhinged than the last. Some are legit (short, no gameplay, etc), while others have some type of political gripe or are bitching about paid positive reviews.

Frankly? I dont give a crap. I liked it for what it was.

Luna Abyss was enjoyable

Pleasantly surprised by this one. Little metroid prime and doom eternal combined. KILLER visual design (altough raised blacks and lack of hdr were a bummer) and well done voice acting, despite the story being odd.

Shame the studio is pretty much dead; i think they all got let go. Really good first title with lots of polish.

Luna abyss gamma issue?

The black level in this game is HORRIBLE. Nowhere on the brightness slider makes it look anything other than a washed out miasma of gray, and I'm playing on an lg c5 oled.

What gives?

Enjoyed chernobylite... with a couple caveats

Liked this game more than i thought i would. Visuals were great, story was cool and had me wanting to solve the mystery.

Couple things i didn't like:

Little repetitive.

Gunplay was rather mid.

And the biggest... it was kind of a pain in the ass to keep everyone alive and get the good ending. Trying to keep everyone happy was interesting, but i think the game was way too stringent with that when it comes to the ending.

SPOILER:

I let sashko have at it with the general. In turn, Olga was forced to sacrifice herself so we could get into the plant (despite Google telling me otherwise! ) The only thing this changes is the character eulogies at the end, but still; it was a lot of hassle to get it all "right, " and it still didn't go 100% right.

I could go back to a save and fix that, but i honestly don't want to deal with the hassle of changing choices and going back to the heist. The backlog struggle is real and i have other things to play.

All in all a good game, but too easy to make one mistake and lose a companion.

So I'm kind of hooked on Disco Elysium

I'd heard good things about this game since release, but it never seemed quite my bag. After finishing Replaced, i went through some older gamepass installs and figured I'd give it a shot.

Not usually my type of game, and i have no idea if I'm playing it "right" (it pretty much just throws you in there and let's you have at it), but I'm hooked. I thought the lack of combat, visual novel type of "gameplay " would turn me off, but it's so charmingly weird, well voice acted, and hysterically written, that i can't get enough.

Who knew? That's the beauty of gamepass, I suppose, trying games you'd normally never look at twice and finding something you really dig.

PS Plus and games you own physically

Here's a candidate for dumbest question of the day:

A game i own on disc but haven't installed yet just showed up in the game catalog. If I add it to my library through plus, install it, and play it that way, I can still use my disc and play it after it leaves the catalog with no issues, correct?

Replaced beaten. Pretty cool experience, but...

I think the weakest point is the combat. I think the dev prioritized the animations over zippiness or something, because it just didn't feel that responsive. Frustrating when dealing with the gank squads repeatedly.

Other than that, top notch. Visuals, story, vibe, and score were all great. Maybe a couple pacing issues, but it's very engaging and unique overall.

Question about x men and the evolutionary war

Real quick one here.

I'm in the middle of CC's xmen run, following krushing crisis reading guide. I'm a few UXM away from where he's inserted the whole of the evolutionary war.

Is it worth reading, or can i skip it? I dont mind big events, but that's a ton of big annuals to read, and I'd rather not get derailed from the x books and forget what's going on in each book.

Thoughts?
