DC Studios Co-CEO Peter Safran Explained Why Supergirl Would Fail Months Before Its Release!

It's ironic that Peter Safran himself essentially described what ended up happening with Supergirl. He argued that there was no such thing as "superhero fatigue" only "mediocre movie fatigue" and stressed that audiences would only show up for films that felt fresh, original, and worth experiencing.

He even said, "You have to change the game a little bit."

Fast forward to the box office, and Supergirl failed to debut at No. 1 in any country where it was released, suggesting that it struggled to generate strong audience interest despite carrying the DC brand.

The irony couldn't be greater. Gunn and Safran claimed they wanted to eliminate mediocrity, yet they've served DC fans that very same mediocrity on a silver platter. Despite having one of the greatest comic book source materials ever written, they turned it into a creatively bankrupt adaptation. They seemed to believe they were still living in the 2010s, when audiences would consume whatever pile of shit was put in front of them as long as it had a superhero logo attached to it. The box office has made it painfully clear that those days are over.

Supergirl Is Now the Highest-Grossing Supergirl Movie of All Time, Flying Toward Becoming the Second-Highest-Grossing Film in the DCU!

What an incredible turnaround. Congratulations to James Gunn and Peter Safran for delivering a film that has resonated with audiences around the world. From the beginning, they spoke about rebuilding DC with a focus on quality storytelling, strong characters, and a clear long-term vision and this is another major step in that direction.

Breaking the all-time Supergirl record and now soaring toward becoming the second-highest-grossing film in the DCU is no small feat. It's great to see audiences embracing this new era of DC, and hopefully this success gives the studio even more confidence to continue prioritizing creative, filmmaker-driven projects.

Here's to many more wins for the DCU. The future looks brighter than ever.

Supergirl - Slightly updated OS numbers, now points towards OS opening of 23-37M. Most of the markets for now seams in total collapse and missing the high-end of markets like UK, could lead to sub $30M. No market will break $10M OW and if UK also slips, no market will break $5M OW. Global OW $65-80M

Well... thing indeed look grim as previously range was $30-$45M, Now, only 1 market has a chance to open above $5M USD and the final total gross, maybe 3 or 4 markets had chance to finish above $5M USD - UK, Mexico, Australia, and maybe Brazil & France (that one we will see as it opens next week, but if other European markets are anything to go by, $3-$4M final will be more in line).

On lower end global OW look to be on par with Shazam 2! ($65M Global OW / $134M WW Finish) and on the high end Morbius ($84M Global OW / $167M WW Finish). If some utter total rejection/collapse happens, sub $100M is not out of the realm of possibility, but I would not go that far. Shazam 2! numbers seams more in line here.

And with that I hope you had fun in the last few days. Will go see the movie in a few hours :D. Maybe will do something like this for the 2nd weekend ;)
