Losing display signal

This has been a week long saga of frustration trying to get my build working for CRT gaming. I have a Dell Optiplex 3020 and a Radeon R5 430 for my set up, and everything was working just fine when I initially installed Batocera. Something happened then that I did not intend, I tried to install PlexKodiConnect and as it scanned my movie library, I lost signal, and now this is happening every time I try to boot up Batocera.

I’ve tried reinstalling Windows and using the mobo DisplayPort for signal to figure out what’s going on. But every time I try to use my GPU DisplayPort, it occasionally works for a minute or so but always eventually crashes.

I took a break from the frustration of this project for a week and I’m trying it again with a clean Batocera install, but same issues with the additional problem that the integrated mobo DisplayPort can’t handle Batocera so I can’t even get past booting it from my flash drive. This has just been a nightmare and I’m hoping anyone in this community has a solution. I currently have a replacement GPU in the mail but I’m a fool and didn’t check, and it’s one of the units that has 2 display ports and no DVI which I need for this build. So that’s on me lmao.

PLEASE READ: Please don’t tell me to just use Mister FPGA, that’s probably going to be the first comment because someone didn’t read all the way through. I understand that it’s better, but it’s not in the budget right now and I also would like to attempt to access my Plex server, which is clunky and in very early stages of development with FPGA.

I am finally free from the shackles of FB Market place

Been looking for a solid end game TV, and scored massively today. Seller was going to sell it to me for 10 but I gave him 40 because he was a really good dude and dug out an extension cord so we could make sure it worked. She’s a little crusty on the outside but running like an absolute dream. Gave my Panasonic to a good home where my buddies twins can get the true experience we’re all in love with.

TV is the JVC I’Art AV-27F475. I’ll upload some better photos later, got so excited that I forgot I needed to eat dinner.

Re-shell for my sisters GBA SP

Glad I chose to record this as a time lapse so you didn’t hear me crashing out over getting the hinge cover screw back in or struggling to get that stupid ribbon cable inserted again. Final product turned out great though, the shell quality is pretty decent, but definitely will be getting her a clear case for it just to be safe.

Trying to find the model number for this TV

These are not my photos, this is from a Marketplace posting and were the only photos posted. I have scoured the database for every model of Panasonic CRT and haven’t found anything with this exact layout of buttons and inputs. The inputs also confused me because it looks like it may have an S-video input in the front, which I’ve only seen on Tau models, but it could also be a headphone port, but again, I’ve only seen that to the left of the front composite port, not the right like this one. From what I can tell it’s a flat screen CRT but I could be wrong, the angle of the photo indicates that it could also be curved. The biggest factor that is puzzling to me is the narrow bezel on the bottom. That makes me think it’s a higher end model like a Tau but it’s not consistent with any models I’ve seen on line and doesn’t have the markings. I’m hoping to get more info from the seller tomorrow, he said he’d send pictures of the back, but I was wondering if anyone else has come across this unit before. I’ll provide an update if the seller gets back to me.

Grail TV but the price hurts

I've been watching this TV that's only an hour away from me for over a month, the price has gone down but they're still asking almost 300 dollars and I just don't know if I can justify that when I already have a working Panasonic 27 inch curved CRT that works great already. The CRTs with the charcoal exterior are my favorite and I especially love the Panasonic Tau line but the price seems so steep for something that might stop working tomorrow.

Finished my *fingers crossed* future proof SNES

I've spent the past 1-2 months slowly acquiring everything I needed to build an SNES that should last. I was playing on a loaner from a friend, turns out it was suffering from PPU failure, so I gave it back to him for hospice care so he can enjoy it while it's still working. Would have loved to fix it but I didn't have the expertise to even attempt to fix it and everywhere I looked for guidance on swapping chips all led to "just buy another unit."

I was able to get the internals of a 1CHIP-02 for a "reasonable" price and stuck it in a BitFunx shell that I think ended up looking really clean.

I specifically wanted a 1CHIP because I need this thing to be reliable. These units having supposedly better picture quality is a nice positive but the real benefit for me is the hope that this is a longer lasting unit since it's newer and has the consolidated chip and less points of failure. I never got to play the SNES on original hardware as a kid and am just now diving in in my 30s so I have a massive catalog of games to play and hopefully this will last for at least the next 10 years.

I also have the HD Retrovision cables on the way, S-video signal looks great but the brightness of the signal from the 1CHIP is really hard on the eyes and I don't want to have to mess with settings every time I switch between consoles so I ended up dropping the money for component cables. Not to mention since the goal of this project has been longevity these cables were an inevitable purchase.

EDIT: I plan on re-capping the board within the next several months, just started learning how to solder and would hate to ruin this thing by going into it half cocked.

Concert in my car

The best my speakers in my 2015 Subaru (Harman/Kardon speaker package) have ever sounded is from this little guy (modded iPod 5.5 gen). Just blasted Alive 2007 and I actually felt transported. Car stereos being designed with iPods in mind was something I totally missed out on until now. Probably never using my phone for music while I'm driving ever again.

FX Pak Pro Issues

As you can see in the photo, certain visuals in certain games have this strange grid glitch, I thought it may be an issue with the power supply so I purchased a Triad/adapter, but the issue persists. I'm hoping it's not an actual issue with the console, it seems to display my physical copies just fine. Just playing off the flash cart seems to be causing problems.

EDIT: Just wanted to note that I have correctly formatted my SD card, using a reputable brand, and there should be no issues with the file. The example in the photo is an MSU-1 but it's doing this with the original game file as well.

SNES Component or S-Video Debate

Dead horse I know, but I'm so conflicted about this specifically with the SNES. I've been playing SNES games on the Wii with component cables for the past couple of months and it truly does look amazing on my CRT, but a good friend just indefinitely lent me his SNES so I could finally play on true OG hardware and I just started testing it out.

The biggest hurdle in terms of getting the "best" signal out of the console is obviously whether you want to spend exorbitant amounts of money to get component signal out of the SNES or "settle" for s-video.

I'm using S-video now ($6 dollar cable) and I feel like the difference is so marginal that spending the money for component signal seems not worth it. Not to mention in terms of "authenticity," S-video was as good of a signal as you were going to get while games were still being released for the console.

TL;DR: Just wanting to hear what people's experiences have been between component and s-video with the SNES and whether it's truly actually worth spending all that money on the cables. Just interested in people's opinions on the subject since there's so many very knowledgeable folks in this subreddit on this subject.

What sayeth the council?

First time and probably last time tinkering with the service menu, I felt like I was peering into the abyss while making adjustments and eventually had to stop for my own sanity. I wish I'd taken photos before, there was a black bar visible on the bottom that is thankfully fixed so I'm not constantly noticing it instead of enjoying gaming. But let me know what you think.

Also, TV is a Panasonic CT-27D11E.

So I did a shell swap on my DSi months ago, it took 5 hours and was a huge struggle (but I was extremely cautious), then when I went to try to turn it on, the power light flashed and the bottom screen flashed, then nothing. I was so defeated by the whole process that I put it in a drawer and gave up on it until today. I finally mustered up the motivation to open it up again, since I suspected that it was an issue with the top screen ribbon cable. I made sure the cable was fully seated and tried again. Same thing. I assume it's a damaged ribbon cable, so what would be the best next steps? Thanks
