This beat started with a vocal sample. I kept pitching and chopping it until it became a completely new melody. Definitely not where I expected to end up when I first loaded the sample.

Feels like key samples have always been one of the defining sounds of Boom Bap. Whether it’s a dusty piano, Rhodes or electric keys.

I spontaneously entered the Thomann Beatmaking Contest and decided to see what I could create using only the samples provided in the contest pack.

I ended up using four different samples and built the entire foundation on my MPC in standalone mode. After that, I moved everything into Logic for arrangement, mixing and some final adjustments. The last step was bringing everything back to the MPC, mapping and layering the sounds across the pads and turning the finished beat into something I can perform live.

It was actually a fun challenge because working with a limited sample selection forces you to approach the beat differently. Have you ever entered a beatmaking contest before?
