A bit of a rant post…

I started freelancing in April as a 3D and motion designer after six years working in design agencies and in-house. It started off really well. I had lots of jobs for the first three months and was making good money. Summer was quiet, which was to be expected I think. I was also traveling a lot.

I haven’t worked since August, and I have about five or six recruiters who are helping me. I get sent potential jobs by them at least once a week, and they put me forward for them, but the past five jobs have fallen through, either because the client chose another candidate that they put forward or the need for a freelancer was gone.

I know that the first year of freelancing is the toughest, and I want to stick it out at least until next April, but I’m starting to get really worried. I’m running low on money, and I really don’t know what to do. I’ve reached out to more recruiters, friends of friends in the industry, reached out to clients directly offering my services, but no luck at the moment. I had three jobs fall through in the past week.

Does anyone have any advice or is experiencing the same thing? I know freelance can be inconsistent, and sometimes you have a lot of work and other times nothing, but I can’t help but feel like this isn’t working anymore.

On April 1st, one month into my lease renewal, major construction started in the adjacent lot. There is scaffolding everywhere, construction noise is constant and unbearable (I work from home). The construction is blocking light, there’s no privacy, and there are now plans to wall in my bathroom window. There is also occasional out of hours construction and noise.

During lease renewal discussions with my landlord, none of this was disclosed, building management also did not notify tenants before it started. My landlord even increased my rent. The board keeps saying that the construction is up to code and that everything is legal. For context, this is a condo and the board members are all unit owners, some of whom do not live in the building.

In addition, the in building laundry hasn’t been working for the last 4 months, and the building is very poorly maintained (there is a giant hole and leak in the vestibule that still hasn’t been repaired despite exposed wires which is a major safety hazard)

I want to move. There is no provision in my lease agreement for breaking the lease unless it’s by mutual agreement with my landlord. I also could try and sublet as a second option - I can’t afford to lose the security deposit. The only thing with subletting is that I can’t really justify charging my rent with everything happening in the building, can I?

What do you think I should do?

Hey! I'm currently in the process of buying my first proper turntable and was trying to figure out which speakers to get. My parents have these vintage french speakers they bought in France in 1989. Can't find much about them online except here:

Hey! I’ve been collecting records for a while but only had a really junk crosley that I stopped using to avoid ruining my records. Looking to finally buy a solid but simple setup, including turntable, amp and speakers.

I always get overwhelmed by the plethora of options and information online so would really appreciate some recommendations!

I’ve heard good things about audio technica turntables and edifier speakers, but not well versed at all! Thanks!
