My pretty close (but incomplete) recreation of Super Mario Bros. 1-1 in Godot

You can play it here.

I have been slowly working my way through the 20 Games Challenge to learn Godot and game development. I really love Mario games, so when I got to that part of the challenge I decided to go all out and recreate SMB 1-1 as faithfully as I could. I recreated everything from scratch except the audio (yes, I copied the art pixel by pixel lol). I figured I would learn a lot, and I definitely did. I also gained a new appreciation for these games. There's so much work that goes into them which you don't really think about as a casual player.

I don't know exactly how many hours this took, but I worked on it on around 45 different days between late March and today. I took a lot of breaks and I started to get burned out by the end, so I cut some scope (namely the fire flower and star power) so I could call it complete. The itch.io page goes into more detail regarding what's different or missing.

I definitely didn't need to go this in-depth to learn game development, and maybe I shouldn't have, but right now I'm glad I did. It gave me a lot of confidence and a better understanding of how to break down a game into small problems that can more easily be solved. If you want to learn game development, faithfully recreating a vertical slice of your favorite classic games might be worth giving a shot. Just keep in mind it's all to learn and have fun, so it doesn't need to be perfect.

Would getting deviated septum surgery likely fix these symptoms?

Last year I went to the ENT and he said I have a slight deviated septum. He said I could get surgery or try to use a nasal spray for a while and see if that relieves the symptoms enough. I don't think the spray helps much if at all, so I'm considering surgery. However, the ENT looked up my nose for literally like 5 seconds, which didn't leave me with much confidence in his assessment. So I want to describe my issues and get a second set of opinions on whether or not surgery might help or if something else might be causing my problems.

Symptoms:

  • It feels like one of my nostrils is 95% clogged most of the time. Thing is, the clog can be in either nostril, it's not just one side that has the problem. And the clog can shift to different sides throughout the day.
  • Terrible sleep. The pressure is so uncomfortable that I lay on my side that's opposite of the clog, so that gravity can help relieve some of the pressure. When I was a kid, it was common for one side to feel clogged, and laying on my opposite side always quickly helped the clog shift to the other side. Nowadays, I lay on my side and it takes hours for the clog to shift, if at all. Every morning I wake up with back pain due to laying like this, and falling asleep is also difficult due to the pressure.
  • In the winter, when I blow my nose in the morning it's always bloody, and it's not just dark and dry, it's fresh and bright red. It's like no air at all is able to travel through one of the nostrils.
  • I had a cavity for the first time in 20 years. The theory is that because I have trouble breathing through my nose, I breathe through my mouth more often and my mouth got dried out, which allowed the bacteria to grow.

Things that don't help:

  • Blowing my nose. Some mucus does come out, but my nose doesn't feel cleared afterwards. I even close one nostril, close my ears, and blow so hard it hurts my back. I can feel air coming out, and weirdly when I look up my nose in the mirror it doesn't look like things are blocked off, but still the pressure remains.
  • Using a Nettie pot
  • Using a humidifier when sleeping during winter
  • Nasal spray
  • Steamy showers
  • Holding my breath and other weird techniques
  • Traveling to different parts of the US with very different climates (so probably not allergies)

Things that do help:

  • Standing/sitting upright. Somehow the gravity helps relieve pressure and sometimes my nose can feel almost clear, but still not quite. And still, this doesn't always work.
  • Distracting myself so I don't think about it

Some history:

  • Although these problems suddenly started in the past few years, maybe I had this issue my whole life and the symptoms just weren't as noticeable. When I was a little kid, I apparently couldn't blow my nose and my mom had to use a suction device to suck the snot out (sorry if that's TMI lol). Now I'm thinking maybe a deviated septum was preventing me from blowing hard enough.
  • I will say that I did have Covid twice, but these issues started about a year or so before I (knowingly) had it.

There's probably more I'm forgetting, but maybe that's enough. Did anyone else have symptoms like these and did getting deviated septum surgery fix them? Could there be some other root cause? Thank you.

This is how I know Dunkey didn't get far in Splatoon Raiders... He didn't mention the return of the Legend

Could there be any significance to this jewelry? (Season 3 spoilers)

>!In season 3 episode 16, I noticed a large black ring on Chantal's left middle finger. It just felt a bit too front-and-center for me, so I thought maybe the creators were hinting that there was something more to it.!<

>!Then in the Audrey's Dance scene later that episode, I noticed Audrey is wearing a similar black ring on her right middle finger. Unfortunately it's hard to get a clear view of the ring to know for sure if it's the exact same or not. But it sure is a strange coincidence that 2 characters in the same episode are wearing large black rings on their middle fingers.!<

>!Lastly, in episode 17, the weird fleshy mass that Diane respawns from has a shiny black center, and it reminded me of the ring again. !<

>!But if they were connected, I couldn't see how or why. Maybe I just missed it, but I have never seen anyone discuss this ring before. I can't tell if I'm onto something or I'm reading into things too much. !<

>!I really don't know the meaning, but here's a guess... We know that Chantal had an open affair with Mr. C. and she wore the ring. We also know that Mr. C raped Audrey to create Richard, and she wore the ring. So perhaps it's something like those who wear the rings are in Mr. C's thrall. Lastly, we know Diane's tulpa said Mr. C raped her, and Diane was reborn from that ring-looking thing. Perhaps the rings helped trap her in the Black Lodge, and the fact they were worn on opposite hands means they're 2 halves of a whole. Perhaps Chantal dying and Audrey waking up (or whatever that was) in the previous episode were necessary for Diane to hatch from the fleshy mass in the next episode.!<

>!Someone who's smarter than me, tell us what it really means!!<

Does anyone know the top 1% threshold for this latest Big Run?

I got 205 in freelance thanks to an inkredible team, but it was only enough for top 2%. I want to know how close I was to reaching true glory.

Request: Video recording of all stages of Squid Jump, Squid Racer, and Squidball

I recently went back and beat the 3 arcade games from Splatoon 1. While struggling with the later stages of Squidball and Squid Racer, I tried searching for a video playthrough to figure out how to win. To my surprise, I could find no videos covering these stages! I don't speak Japanese, but I even searched using the Japanese names for these games on YouTube and didn't find anything! The only decent video I found was a Japanese Squid Jump player who played the later levels and made it to the last stage, but gave up before winning. Everyone else just records the early stages.

Does anyone know of any full video recordings of all stages from these games? If not, I am requesting anyone to record these and upload them, even if you have to edit out all your game overs. I think these arcade games are important to Splatoon and deserve to have full video archives at the very least. If no one can find existing videos and no one wants to make one, I can try to record them myself someday, but I don't have a good way to record the Wii U GamePad.

Edit: I managed to find full footage of Squid Jump at least. This video covers almost all levels but doesn't beat the game. This video covers the last few levels and beats the game.

What is this metallic lamp thing?

It was in my late great aunt's posession. Resembles a hookah lamp but I don't know for sure. The lid at the top does close on a hinge, and there is a small opening at the tip of the spout.
