Anyone have trouble swallowing after Septoplasty surgery?

I’m talking 1-2 weeks Post-op, splints removed. One I got the splints removed I definitely could eat more food once I got air back through my nose. But been having trouble swallowing large portions of food. Been having to keep eating small portions. Sometimes I have trouble swallowing even without eating anything. Anyone else have that issue?

Deviated septum or an old polyp from a sinus infection?

Hi, 48 year old male here.

I am confused. A year ago I got a terrible sinus infection and did not treat it. My nostrils became super crusty and there was (what appeared to be) a red polyp blocking my right nostril. I just went to an ENT and he said it's a deviated septum. There is also a scab at that spot. He wants to do surgery. He didn't do scans, just a scope.

What is weird is that I do not recall ever having a blocked nostril prior to the sinus infection.

Also, I have seen an ENT like 7 years ago (for something else) and they didn't say anything about a deviated septum.

Is it possible this is just trauma from my sinus infection? I looked up his profile and he seems well regarded.

27M - ENT recommends Septoplasty & Turbinoplasty, but I’m worried they just want money. Can nasal sprays fix this permanently?

Hey everyone. I’m 27M and have dealt with nasal blockage my whole life, especially at night. I finally went to an ENT , and they diagnosed me with a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, and a concha bullosa. They immediately recommended septoplasty, turbinoplasty, and a concha bullosa reduction.

My issue is that where I live (in India), a lot of doctors are notorious for pushing unnecessary surgeries just to make a profit. I’m really hesitant to go under the knife if I don't absolutely have to.

Currently, I use antihistamines and Fluticasone nasal spray. As long as I use them consistently, I get great relief. But if I stop for even a few days, the blockage comes right back. I don't have any actual allergy symptoms (no sneezing, no cold) literally just the blockage.

My questions for those who have been through this:

Do I actually need this surgery, or is the ENT just pushing it?

Is it possible to permanently shrink turbinates and a concha bullosa with just sprays and antihistamines over time, or is it a losing battle?

Here is my CT Report for reference:

All sinuses are normal.

Osteomeatal complex normal, bilaterally.

Concha bullosa to left side.

Bilateral inferior turbinates are hypertrophied.

Cribriform plate / Lamina papyracea normal.

DNS to left side.

Any advice or personal experiences would be really helpful! Thanks.

I couldn't remember why I can't breathe thru my nose until now. I don't remember it being this bad until it started like 3 years ago, and im thinking back to an event that mightve been the cause of it and that was being punched in the nose on a fight on a bus. Gonna see an ent.

That's my cause of my deviated septum I am almost damn sure.

Cauterization Question

Recently had septoplasty and turbinate reduction. Day 17 post op had a very bad bleed in right nostril. Required a trip to ER and they had to call an ENT in at 3 AM to cauterize it. I feel like he took his time and did a good job. Had follow up 2 days later to remove packing at my surgeons office, he said it looked good and to take it easy another week until I see him again. I’m terrified I’m going to have another bad bleed at any time even though he said it looked good. I’m 3 days post cauterization and having some slight old blood drainage.

Has anyone had cauterization done after surgery that didn’t eventually require a second surgery? I’m fine with another surgery if that’s what it takes, I’m just trying not to get caught off guard with another traumatic experience.

6 hours after septoplasty with inferior turbinate reduction – I can already breathe through my nose. If you’ve been putting this surgery off, this is your sign to consider it.

I had a septoplasty with inferior turbinate reduction around 6 hours ago, and I honestly can’t believe the difference already.

My nose is still swollen, bloody, and full of clots and crusting from the surgery, so it’s definitely nowhere near the final result. Despite that, I can already breathe through my nose better than I ever could before surgery. It honestly feels surreal.

One of the biggest surprises is that my sense of smell and taste already seem noticeably better. I wasn’t expecting to notice any improvement this early, especially with all the swelling and congestion, but things already feel completely different.

Recovery hasn’t been bad so far. It’s more of a feeling of congestion and pressure than severe pain. Obviously everyone is different, and I’m only a few hours into recovery, so I know swelling will probably fluctuate over the next several days before things continue improving.

The thing that amazes me is this: if my nose already feels this much better while it’s fresh out of surgery, swollen, and full of blood and mucus, I can’t even imagine what it’ll feel like in a month once everything has healed.

For years, I forgot what it was like to breathe properly through my nose. I got so used to constant blockage that I thought it was just normal. Having airflow through both nostrils feels incredible.

If you’re someone who’s been diagnosed with a deviated septum and enlarged turbinates, and you’ve been putting off surgery because you’re nervous, hopefully this gives you some reassurance. Surgery isn’t the right choice for everyone, and you should always discuss it with your ENT surgeon, but for me this already feels genuinely life-changing.

I’ll probably post updates over the next few weeks as the swelling goes down and my recovery progresses, but so far I’m extremely happy that I finally went through with it.

let me know if you guys want in depth updates!

Perforated septum??

Sorry for the pic!!!
I am 6days post op and was not warned about the possible complication of a perforated septum. I feel like I see a gap between the tissue of my nostril and my septum(?) (where the red line is in the third photo) however it is lower and not where I see it occurring in others is this just where the cut was made in surgery or could this be a perforation?

My mucus is stuck on the side of septum, 16 days post op

It's not even washing away with the nasal rinse which doctor gave me, and i don't want to put my finger back in my nose and hurt the septum and damage the bone by trying too hard yk. Suggest what to do

Need more posutive experiences

Hi everyone, I’d really like to hear more positive experiences with septoplasty and turbinate reduction. Are there people who have had this surgery and experienced no problems at all in the long term? Lately, it seems like everything I read is about someone having complications.
Are there also people who have had revision surgery and are now completely symptom-free? We just need to hear more positive experiences.

Is a septoplasty worth it?

Hi all, I have a moderate-severe deviated septum on the left side. I definitely struggle a lot with breathing through my nose and I feel like I have poor sleep quality as a result. Whenever I get sick or have allergies, the mucosa on the inside of my left nostril swells nearly completely closed.

I saw an ENT about 8 months ago for unrelated reasons and he tried to scope through my left nostril and it was incredibly painful. He said I had a pretty moderate-severe deviation and that I could maybe get that corrected with insurance coverage. Then he scoped my right nostril instead.

I didn’t really inquire further because the thought of surgery (and being under anesthesia) is quite jarring for me.

But, my quality of life definitely does suffer a bit because of the deviation. I know there are pros and cons to anything like this, but has anyone here experienced more cons than pros? Or was this life-changing for you?

Should I consider seeing my ENT and further investigating my options?

Best picture I could get of the deviation is attached. Sorry it’s not great!

5 months post-op - Snoring

Hi! So I am officially over 5 months post-op, healing mostly done, everything is going well. Sleep has been amazing. I would say that the septoplasty improved my breathing by 80%, one nostril only has a 70% airflow but still a big improvement as it was down to I would say 0~10% before.

My issues these days is that the quality of my sleep seems to me decreasing. Before septoplasty, I woke up a lot every night, did not feel really rested in the morning. Well, for the last few days, it's happening again. I am even waking up because I can hear my self snoring (never happened before the surgery). I use mouth tape everyday when I sleep now, and it was working well until now but I am not sure what is going on...

I am guessing it might that I am having a cold, or just that it's too hot where I live so it wakes me up multiple times during the night, but I am wondering if anyone can relate or whatever? Thanks!

Handling regret for not doing this sooner?!

Context: 1 week post-op, had splints out today and HOLY. Is this how everyone else has been breathing their whole lives?!

I'll skip the operation / recovery chat because it's been well covered, but wondering if anyone else has struggled with the psychological side of this decision, and wishing they'd done it sooner?

I didn't realise my septum was deviated til I was 30. Went through the NHS system in the UK and waited a long time for a surgical date, which was then scheduled 9 days before a trip to France (1.5hr flight), two weeks before a long haul flight to Indonesia, from which I was moving to New Zealand. My surgeon advised the recovery dates were too tight and I cancelled the surgery. Figured I'd got this far without it.

In the following years it bothered me on and off, depending on how much attention I gave it. I was in the runup to leaving a job at a tech company when they suddenly offered private healthcare. I was so focused on leaving, and had mentally shelved the idea of surgery, that I didn't even consider pursuing it.

Fast forward another few years and after getting fixated on my breathing again (and the asymmetry I think it's creating in my face?!) I've just self-funded the surgery at 38. I know I'm only a week into recovery but I am kicking myself for not doing this sooner, for taking the conservative advice in the first instance, and not prioritising it when insurance cropped up.

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the next best time is today. I know. But, anyone else?!

PS. My recovery tip? Mouth wash! My teeth felt so fuzzy from all the mouth breathing and my top lip was hard to move up enough to brush well. Also a travel pillow to keep your head upright whilst sleeping :)
