We need to talk about Jimmy

OK, for those of you who saw Sting of Death last night, and those of you seeing it on Sunday, there's a Fathom Event preview for a Jimmy Stewart in WWII biopic called "Jimmy" starring KJ "Archie" Apa as Jimmy.

The issue here is that it looks shockingly bad. Apa is doing a later-in-life Stewart impression throughout, but very poorly. It's very jingoistic. And it just looks cheaply made. I looked up the production company, and it's one of those religious cheapo-movie houses that are paying Fathom to screen this.

There were actually people laughing at the trailer. It could have been a fake 30 Rock trailer without a single change.

Holy shit what a find!

So I picked up what I thought was a Steam Deck LCD 256gb on Marketplace for $450. Great deal by itself right? I get it home. Orange power button. Black thumb sticks. Model 1030. It’s the OLED! Holy shit!

One specific player at Bellagio...

I played $1/$3 at Bellagio last November, and this May, and happened to get the same guy at my table both times. He has long hair, is very skinny and wears a red medical vest. He goes by Tommy, I think. He's exceptionally loud and obnoxious and will not shut up, hits on every woman in sight, and drinks heavily throughout. He's also terrible, and never pays attention, but sometimes builds up an enormous stack through sheer luck.

Anyone else played at this guy's table?

When you've beaten the $1/$3 game...

But $2/$5 is dead at every poker room within a 200 mile radius, and online poker is a no go. What to do?

The Bomb Pot Infection :)

First time I ever saw a $1/3 NLHE game with "bomb pots" was at RCG, the Rockford Charity Game that's run all over the Chicago suburbs to comply with state law. One round of pot-limit Omaha at every dealer change, with a double board whose both flops are dealt before any rounds of betting.

Next, I saw bomb pots playing in a poker room in Houston. (except they do one double board, then one single board PLO before Hold'em resumes.)

Now they're at several of the poker rooms in Vegas, including all over Bellagio.

The pluses are that it invariably moves a bunch of chips around and changes the dynamic of the table, and they're optional with no penalty.

The minuses is that the variance is HUGE. At Bellagio I lost my entire stack with a made straight thanks to a rivered boat.

What do you think about them? Do you have a lot of experience with bomb pots? Should they stay or should they go?

The pace of events and other maddening things about Pocket

I know that events are being revamped sometime this fall. It's maddening at the moment though how slow the pace of events are, especially the time between finishing a set and the launch of the next one. ESPECIALLY since ranked play, the one big reason to log in between set completion, still isn't active this season. Also, the events we do get are the same old, same old: medallion versus play, Wonder Pick promos, and so on.

It's frustrating that Live, which I enjoy playing also, gets thing like build and play that match the real-life prereleases and has many different game modes, some ranked, some unranked.

It's also frustrating that without rotation, each new set is offering diminishing returns. This most recent set added almost nothing to the meta, making it stale almost from day 1. Tournaments on Limitless are dwindling as a result.

It's weird. Pocket is the big moneymaker. Since you can't buy into Live anymore, or even spend money on the game whatsoever (not even cosmetics!), it doesn't make any money at all, yet it seems to have two or three times the resources devoted to it.

Don't even get me started that the one set that many of us haven't completed yet, the EX set, has only come back once. Now would be the perfect time to bring it back a second time, and yet nothing.

Obvious scammers or what is going on here?

Tons of sellers with no feedback from Hong Kong flooding eBay with cheap Legion Go 2s, several of which have sold. Obvious scam or are they unloading inventory or what? Am I protected if I take a flyer on this?

35th Anniversary of Season 3 and 301 Cave Dwellers

As alerted to me on the FB MST3K group, today is the 35th anniversary of Season 3 of MST3K, led off by the premiere of 301 Cave Dwellers. Many consider Cave Dwellers to be one of the best episodes and season 3 to be one of the best seasons of all time, and I can't disagree.

Best solution for basement walls?

Currently I'm in a family of 5 who live in a large basement. Not much in the way of privacy, but I'm coming into some money so would like to look into a wall solution to turn the basement into a kind of apartment. What's the most cost effective route here?

First venues added for 30th anniversary MST3K: The Movie screenings

Working on exact dates and times, but 30th anniversary screenings of MST3K: The Movie are a go at the Lark near San Francisco third week of July, the Prytania in New Orleans last week of August, mid-September at the Alex near Los Angeles, and late September at the Roxy in Missoula, MT. (I'll also be showing the Jim Henson movie Labryinth on back to back nights.)

More venues being added all the time including one in Minneapolis, hopefully! Hope to see a lot of you there.

Open Box Legion Go S at Best Buy

The Legion Go S is still available as an Open Box at Best Buys all over the country for $590. Still worth it considering Steam Deck prices?

Labyrinth screenings at indie theaters

Hi! I'm the writer of the BOWIE graphic novel and this year and next year I'm hosting Labyrinth (and other Bowie film) screenings across the U.S. at arthouse theaters.

So far, I've gone to Milwaukee, Houston and Chicago, with upcoming screenings in Ft. Wayne, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New Orleans, and Franklin, IN.

My question for you is, what indie theater near you should I be contacting next about a Bowie screening?

MST3K: The Movie anniversary screenings

As you may know I've been screening Bowie movies (mostly Labyrinth) at theaters across the country for the 40th anniversary. Well, I've learned that MST3K The Movie is screenable via Universal and this year is the 30th. It'd be neat to screen that at an art house near you all too!

If I screened it in Minneapolis, it'd be neat if Frank Conniff or another cast member could come out and say a few words to the audience even if they weren't involved with the show at that specific point.

This is fitting because many of us here saw This Island Earth in an art house theater 30 years ago, some of us on a double bill with Brain Candy!

What’s a good art house theater near you that I should be contacting? And who can wear their jumpsuits or bring bots?
