Variable Sweep Wing #3: FMX-14

Variable Sweep Wing #3: FMX-14

This is my third variable swept wing prototype. I changed the system to use a circular hinge, allowing it to swivel more.

This design flies quite well. It loses speed fast when its wings are forward but it maintains its speed well when they are swept back. This design also does not have any leading edge notches, making it easier to cut out. This design is also much smaller, fitting in just one sheet of paper.

I’m planning on making a replica next.

1903 Wright Flyer

This is my very first biplane design. I chose it because it is iconic and a friend challenged me to make one.

The Wrigit Flyer is definitely one of the most complicated planes I’ve made. In total there are 37 pieces on one sheet of paper. It‘s also my first time having a hollow fuselage and making struts.

Just like the WhiteWings one, it is meant to be hand launched but I added a small catapult hook just for testing. I tried my best to get the look accurate but this is certainly very simplified.

I really love this look and I’m even more happy that it can fly although it is more of a display model. Overall this is probably one of my favourite models.

MQ-9 Reaper

This was a quick design that I came up with. The wings are almost as long as the paper is but the aircraft is quite stable in flight. It’s more of a small indoor glider, and I can actually fit 2 in one sheet.

F-35A Lightning II

A year ago, I attempted to make an F-35, but it flew really badly so I gave up on it for a while.

I decided to give it another attempt. It was definitely hard to design as the wing is mid-mounted and it had twin tails that were complicated to get into place.

This plane is an absolute pain to adjust. I got it to fly well indoors but it isn’t really a good flier outdoors. But I really like how it looks! I think the difficulty comes from the fact that the F-35 is quite ”fat” and it doesn’t go well with mid-mounted wings and closely spaced vertical stabilizers.

I might give it another try in the future but for now, I’ll work on other designs.

JF-17

I finally got around to making this plane. There isn’t really much to say about it, just that it looks like an F-16. This the first Pakistani aircraft I’ve made, and it flies quite good! It’s also quite light compared to some of my other designs, most notably the F-16.

Variable Swept Wing (prototype 2 - FMA-111 “Accordion”)

I used the same technique in the first ever WhiteWings variable swept wing to design this prototype. It’s a lot shorter but it flies way better ad looks cleaner.

I managed to cover the holes present in the first prototype’s joint so it is way cleaner and more durable. I also added MiG-23 style notches to make it cleaner when swept forward. Lastly, I also added a hook for launching.

I think this plane works really well as an indoor and outdoor flyer. Swept forward, it’s a nice and graceful indoor glider. Swept back, it becomes an outdoor interceptor that works well with high speed.

I’m planning on reworking the hinge in the next prototype to an actual circular one rather than a series of polygonal notches, but for now this should do.

Saab 21R: my first twin-boom aircraft

I decided to finally complete my collection of Swedish jet fighters. I had made the Saab 29, 32, 35, 37, 39, and 105, and decided to finally make the Saab 21R, which was Sweden’s first jet fighter.

This also happens to be my first attempt at a twin-boom aircraft. I always found those interesting but I hadn’t thought of a design yet. So I made the Saab 21R into a paper airplane.

It flies extremely well when I throw it. The twin tails definitely give it great stability. It glides really nicely indoors, and I added a catapult hook for outdoor launches. Overall, an interesting aircraft indeed!

Working WhiteWings-style variable swept wings!

This is definitely one of the most insane things I’ve made. I didn’t think this would work but it does!

To my knowledge, this is the very first WhiteWings-style variable swept wing design ever. I used only paper in this, no metal. The mechanism works by having a thick 4-layer inner wing and 2-layer outer wing, and a bunch of notches in between. I put it on a fuselage that looks similar to the Panavia Tornado for testing, and it actually flies well!

The wing is VERY thick and the sweep system is definitely fragile, but I‘m glad that it flies! I think it works because I intentionally made the notch for the sweeping wing a little bigger than it needs to be able to fit into the cavity within the inner wing. It’s really complicated, but I can take a picture of the design sheet if you want.

Overall, this is one of my biggest accomplishments in my paper airplane career. I never thought this could ever be possible until today. The only downside is that the plane is really heavy, and it really shows why variable swept wings aren’t really used as much anymore.

Attempting a variable swept wing - Part 1

I read about u/OrigamiAirEnforcer’s XD-190-1 after making my MiG-23 and I decided to begin attempting a variable swept wing.

His design (really cool btw!) used a metal staple in the middle to create hinges for the wings. However, according to him, it was very unstable.

I don’t want to use metal, so my idea has the sweeping portion and a guiding piece sandwiched between two cardstock sheets. This will allow it to sweep without using metal, at least in theory.

In reality though, this prototype does sweep, but it isn't very clean. However, I still believe this design has potential to work. I’ll be attempting more prototypes soon, and hopefully I’ll be able to come up with a design that could work.

MiG-23MLD Flogger-K

I decided after so long to finally make another variable-geometry aircraft and decided on the MiG-23.

This plane was a nightmare to design. The way I do variable sweep is that I make two wing templates and a shared wing tab. The problem with that is I need to make a camo for this plane.

Designing that camo was extremely difficult because I wanted it to be the same on both wing designs. I had to overlay the unswept version on top of the swept one and design the rest of the camo, which was painful.

But I REALLY love this design. It flies quite well and imitates the real flight characteristics in my opinion (the swept forward one sometimes gets into a flatspin.) Overall, this has to be one of my favourite designs I’ve done so far.

MiG-17

I love Cold War jets, so I decided to finally make the MiG-17 into a paper model.

This is certainly one of my favourite paper airplanes. I like the flight performance of it as well as the detail. It flies really fast, although it is prone to pitching up and yawing. This is probably why they added wing fences to it in real life, which this paper airplane doesn‘t have. Interestingly, it appears to be more stable with anhedral wings, which is strange because usually anhedral is unstable in flight.

I really love this specific paper airplane. It’s a nice and fast model that enjoys high speed flights.

Super Étendard

I wanted to make another European jet that was simple and I found the Super Étendard, a simple French strike aircraft. What made it interesting to me is that it was subsonic in an era where supersonic aircraft were very prevalent.

So I decided to turn it into a paper airplane. The livery was fun to design (I really like blue naval liveries) and the design itself was pretty straightforward. It also flies quite well indoors.

I visited the Ace Combat 8 demo (Bonus Level Manila)

What I like:

Graphics look great, like how wingman commands and interaction is back

What I don’t like:

Planes feel really heavy. I almost crashed a few times playing mission 4 and my brother actually did crash on that mission.

Overall I’m really excited to see the full game when it releases!

I know it’s been years since I posted, but here’s an update. My 4 new hubs: CHS, MNL, HBT, and NDB

More strange hub votes coming soon. I promise…

Also, HBT is a concorde-only hub. I’m still trying to get 1000 concordes.

edit: holy crap there are so many new aircraft and 747 sp is in aircraft shop now. also I know it hasn’t really been years but it felt like years.

F-105 “Thud”

The “Thud” is an interesting plane in my opinion. What caught my eye was the forward-swept intakes, which were really interesting. I also like the look of the plane.

So I decided to make it into a paper airplane. The forward swept intakes made it quite wonky to attach to the fuselage. I also had to trim the weight balancing parts a little, although it didn’t really affect the plane a lot.

But I LOVE how this plane turned out. The camo is just iconic and it looks quite smooth. It also flies quite well for a heavy plane, although it isn’t much of a glider just like the real thing.

Now, the last plane in the Century series to make is the F-102 Delta Dagger. I’m probably going to make that soon…

F-101 Voodoo

I’m trying to complete my collection of the whole Century series of aircraft. Right now I’ve made the F-100, F-104, F-106, and now the F-101.

This plane was really easy to design but it is a pain to fly. It’s hopelessly unstable in the roll axis when flying and when I got it to work, it would often deepstall just like the real thing. It’s very long fuselage combined with the small wings also makes it suceptible to warping.

But it at least flies acceptable indoors! I still have two more aircraft from the Century Series (not counting the XF-103 and XF-108) to make. The F-102 will probably be really easy but the F-105 is going to be really difficult.

Also u/Total-Platform6132 I will be working on your two requests soon. I’m just building the designs I had designed but not yet built.

F-117 Nighthawk

The Nighthawk has been on my list for a while, so I decided to make it today.

I gave it its iconic full black paint job and its V-tail. I also gave it a throw tab on the bottom as well as a launching hook.

Unfortunately, when I tested it, it didn’t want to fly very well. I added a LOT of weight to the front yet it would always flip upside down or stall. It’s just one of those planes that truly need fly-by-wire to even have a chance at gliding. After some adjustments I was able to get it to glide a little but its really prone to deep stall because of the location of the V-tail. It’s more of an indoor flyer. I really love the looks of it though!

I might give it another try in the future but for now it’s more of a display model rather than a real performer.

F-16(Remastered)

Around a year and a half ago, I made my original F-16 design. It was one of the first planes I made that I considered realistic, especially with the technique I used to get the intake right.

However, there were things I wanted to improve on, especially with the durability and flight performance. So I decided to remaster it and this time give it a proper livery. I decided to go with the livery of the 77th Fighter Squadron from Shaw AFB, South Carolina.

I decided to give it LERXes and use a single piece wing design that made it retain speed better. I also adjusted the weight distribution so it is much faster, although I can still refrain from adding the extra weight.

It flies really well inside, but I’ll have to wait to test it outdoors as there’s a typhoon passing my country right now. A side effect of this is that I have more time indoors to design new planes.
