Lessons learned from a bad yoga experience

Another post inspired me to share this story that happened to me a few years ago. A friend convinced me to join a yoga class with her - it was not marketed as a beginners class and I told her there’s no way I was ready for anything except complete beginners classes. She’s also a beginner, had gone a few times, and insisted it’s completely chill and will be no problem whatsoever.

It poured rain that day and a 10 minute drive turned into a 30 minute one. I had never been to this studio and got lost in the hallway, I ended up being probably 3 minutes late. Apparently this studio has a policy of allowing walk-ins into a fully booked class once it begins. When I entered the receptionists welcomed me right into the class and I was startled to see the room was packed with no spots at all. The instructor got up from her spot in the front center of the room and gestured for me to use her space.

I was already anxious to do a yoga class as a beginner in the first place, and terrified to practically walk over people to the front. I was facing up against a wall and couldn’t see the instructor or anyone unless I stared at the people next to me. The instructor called out the poses from around the room and I didn’t recognize any of the names and had no clue what to do. To make it worse I was afraid that by taking up the instructors spot I was taking away from all the other students being able to watch the poses being demonstrated. I started to have an internal panic attack and ended up rolling up the mat and taking off maybe 15 minutes in. In the lobby I cried “I’m just a beginner I don’t know what I’m doing!” And took off to my car.

The owner of the studio actually emailed me the next morning offering a free credit to come to one of the beginner classes she personally teaches but they were in the middle of the day on work weeks. It was so gracious of her to offer that and reflects very highly on the studio, but I was too embarrassed and never responded unfortunately.

So I learned: never ever ever be late to yoga!! Lol scarred for life! I probably should have given up the ghost trying to get to the studio once I had missed the class time. I also feel like I proved that I really need to only be in a truly BEGINNERS yoga class, I’m too scared to join on anything else. Even if I had been able to see the poses I’m sure the routine was too advanced for me anyways. I do think that the receptionists and instructors were being kind to me by letting me in to the fully packed studio with no room but maybe the better thing would have been to say “Sorry but the class has already started, please book another time.”

This has been on my mind since I just started taking beginner classes again at a different studio. What’s sad is if I hadn’t made these mistakes being late for a class that was too advanced I might not have taken as long a break from yoga. I’m sorry I didn’t respond to the owner - but at least now I know yoga is not something you want to be late to and in a rush! If it’s not clear, I understand I’m at fault for this.

What are Bird’s Eye peppers?

I work at a nursery and get lots of requests for Birds Eye peppers. When I ask them what type of Birds Eye they are looking for the customers usually don’t seem know exactly what they’re looking for either but they are asking based on name. Often they just describe to me that they are small. I also get requests for “Thai Chiles” and I tried to offer a variety last year and found out that there are also many many forms of “Thai chilies” that are very very different too and we sold a type that was very long and curved similar to cayenne, where the fruits hang down.

I work with our local grower who grows whatever type of peppers we request her, and when asking for a Birds Eye pepper for next spring we are both confused on what exactly it means.

To me, when I think of Birds Eye’s I imagine types like Biquino, chiltepin, and aji charapita. But I see that it can also refer to Thai chilies like “Prik Kee Noo”. To make it more confusing there are also African types like Piri Piri. Some grow upright on the bush and others dangle.

I pride myself in having specialty plants that our customers desire, but we’re also a small business that works a tight ship so I really need to be precise and selective on what we ask our grower to provide. To make things worse some of these varieties seem obscure to the western seed market and our favorite seed sources like Johnny and Fedco don’t have any available by name at all.

TLDR; What comes to your mind as a quintessential Birds Eye Pepper that best represents the category and what you think the average person would most want out of one?

Is there an ideal scape layout for best fish happiness?

Do fish have a preference between having the sides of the tank heavily planted vs having a central design where the sides are totally unplanted and exposed?

I read somewhere that’s the case, yet I see lots of beautiful central/island type designs, and the right triangle design is half and half which seems like a good compromise.

I know it depends on specific fish, but I wonder if there’s some generality. The fish on the list are just ones I’m considering for my tank and having decided what type of peaceful school I want to have added to that mix.

Please chime in with your wisdom!

ETA: These are hand drawn sketches I did on procreate myself NOT AI. I have never used AI and the reason I drew them was to communicate my ideas without using generative AI. I actually thought these are a little embarrassing to share in the first place. Im saying this because I’ve been asked and even accused on a fb cross post of these being AI. :/

Do canister filters remove tannin?

I am a newbie and going to set up a 60 gallon planted tank that I probably want to have tannic or at least occasionally tannic and I just bought a Oase Biomaster Thermo 2 canister filter for it. It says it has “5 carbon pre filter foams” and I’m wondering if that carbon means it’s going to filter the tannin out of the water. I currently only have a little betta tank with a small internal filter and I keep the water varingly tannic - it has wood hardscape and botanicals but I mostly tint the water using rooibos tea and I’m a huge fan of the look.

I planned on doing the same thing with the 60g community I want to set up so I want to know if I should return this new filter before I set it up.

Going from a 6.8 to a 55 gallon?

I spent over a month preparing his tank and have only had my betta a couple of weeks and I’m OBSESSED. There’s 3 amano and some ramshorn snails in there but after deep diving into aquarium research I learned about corys and have become obsessed with wanting some corys.

I’m absolutely kicking myself for not getting a bit of a bigger tank so I could fit at least a school of corys with my betta and have been bit by the “bigger is better” bug.

I’ve found used 55 gallon tanks available and I love the idea of having a 4 foot show tank and I have the perfect space for it. I would hope to have a school of corys, a school of nano fish like rasboras or tetras, and more amano shrimp and snails in a big, planted, community tank.

But…. My betta is SO FREAKING HAPPY. He makes big clusters of bubble nests every day and is active, swimming and playing using every inch of the tank. He doesn’t seem to bother the amano. I wish I could have a more complete ecosystem for him (less mulm) but now I’m wondering if he would be his very happiest in the tank he’s in now. Or maybe just upgrading it to a 20 long style of tank.

Is putting him in a 55g community tank really a good move for him? I am attached to this fish and the idea of him getting his tail nipped, or nipping his own out of stress kills me. Obviously I also don’t know how he would interact with other fish either.

Would be heavily scaped/planted and keeping the tank black water help a betta cope in a 55 community?

I still want the 55g to watch beautiful schools - I’d just rather stay away from MTS this early on in the hobby. But I also want what’s best for this beautiful happy guy.

This is a picture of his tank now. Thanks!
