Good morning! My CEL came on this morning and took it to O Reilly’s to have the code ran. It came up with P0420 and they suggested a new cat and manifold gasket which I absolutely cannot afford at the moment to repair.
I have done some reading online but want to ask how long I can drive on this until I can afford it? That’s if it is even the cat converter. I don’t think it’s clogged because engine runs just like it did before light came on and I’ve driven it for 30 miles with the light on so far. No rough idling and rough driving so far. I’m getting ready to move 570 miles away and just need it to last through that. Also mpgs seemed unaffected. Could it be o2 sensors? Does cat converter cleaner work as a temporary holdover?

Good evening; last week, I had my alternator shaft pop out and knocked the belt off. I was so fortunate in catching it right when it happened (the belt just started to cut). Long story short, towed it to the shop and they replaced the alternator, belt and tensioner.
However, since picking it up on Monday, the belt screeches upon cold start and at very low speeds. Tonight, it screeched more than normal on cold start after work and on low speeds throughout the drive home. Also, I’ve driven it a couple hundred miles since picking it up on Monday. I took a look and the belt is showing no wear on it (still looks brand new to be honest) and no signs of cutting anywhere. At least just from looking under the hood while it’s running, I’m not seeing anything totally out of place yet there isn’t screeching then. I have noticed this new belt doesn’t have as much tension as the last one though. It is sitting on all the pulleys properly too.
Before I go back to the shop and/or another mechanic, what could possibly make this happen? I asked the shop too if everything else was fine on the belt system and they said yep, everything looks good there. The screeching is pretty loud when it happens. Thanks!
