Ammo choices - am I being dumb?

I have settled on only buying ammo that is 40gr "standard velocity" (i.e. around 1050 or so FPS).

The main reason are:

I don't want supersonic ammo for shooting at 100 - 200 yards because it's not as accurate.

Being subsonic, it works great when I put a can in front of it.

And, mainly, because I usually zero my scope at 50 yards and I'm thinking that pretty much anything from CCI SV up to Eley Match will be pretty close to my zero when they're all 40gr standard velocity.

So, I can plink and practice with cheap ammo and shoot match ammo when I'm doing something that merits the expense, and not have to be constantly re-zeroing my scope.

OTOH, I'm guessing that if I buy 36gr or 42gr ammo or ammo that is the really slow "quiet" stuff or anything supersonic, my scope will be off by a fair bit at 100 yards.

According to AB Quantum, the difference between 1050 FPS and 1250 FPS (both at 40gr) is a bit under 2" at 100 yards. That is more "off" than I want to be if I change ammo.

Is my logic here valid?

M4 groups at 50 yards

I shot these groups on Sunday at 50 yards with my M4-22 Elite Tactical.

The ammo was Eley Semiauto Benchrest Precision.

I'm feeling pretty confident that it will shoot consistently under 3/4" at 50, if I use the right ammo and do my part.

I am pretty happy with that from a stock semiauto!

M4-22 at 50 yards

I finally got to spend some quality time with my new M4. All stock, except:

Rise Armament trigger (an old one I had laying around - it's not great, but it's better than the stock trigger)

GPO 4-16x44i FFP MRAD Super Compact scope

UTG Over Bore bipod

This rifle likes Eley Precision Bench Rest ammo pretty well, I'd say.

It was not as fond of SK Rifle Match.

It really did not like CCI Standard Velocity.

I scored only 1 less point with CCI than with the SK, but the shots were all over the place. The SK was way more consistent. When shooting for groups, the SK grouped close to as well as the Eley and the CCI was printing much bigger groups.

These targets were all shot from prone at 50 yards. The 10 ring in the middle of each bullseye is 0.20" (-ish) in diameter.

Tippmann M4-22 first shots

I received my new Tippmann M4-22 Elite yesterday. It felt like Christmas and I couldn't make myself wait until the weekend. So, I field stripped it and gave it a little oil, slapped on my scope, and headed to the PSA indoor range.

EDIT: The scope is a GPO 4-16x44i FFP MRAD from Optics Planet. Never heard of GPO before I bought this one a few months ago, but I think it is awesome! OPMOD on the side means it's an Optics Planet exclusive model.

I put 100 rounds of Winchester M-22 through it, to start. Basically, just slow-ish mag dumps to break it in some. It had a few hiccups in the first mag or two and then ran like a top for the rest of the night.

Next, I put 50 rounds of Remington Subsonic (which is actually standard velocity of 1050fps - which IS subsonic) through it while I started dialing in zero on the scope. First at 15 yards and then moved my target out to 25 yards.

All of this was with the rifle just balanced on a bag on the little bench they have in each lane. No rear support other than my shoulder with me sitting in a chair. And that stock trigger, which feels like about a 6# pull. That trigger is a workout.

Finally, I put 10 rounds of SK Rifle Match through it. 2 x 5 round groups.

The first picture of a target is that first group. The flyer was the very first round I shot after switching from the Remington ammo.

The last picture is the second group. It makes me happy. :D

Time to put in the good AR trigger I have laying around.

My bipod for it should arrive tomorrow and then it will be time to take it outdoors and zero the scope properly at 50 yards.

New 22 day!

I got a new Tippmann M4-22 Elite to add to the family. I really hope it's as accurate as the reviews say it is. I've got some different match ammo to test. I saw several reviews that got 1/2" at 50 yards. If I can get that, I will be SUPER happy.

Disclaimers: Yes, I'm going to move the rear flip-up sight in front of the scope and move the scope back some. I just slapped it on for family photos. And no, the magnifier on the 10/22 clone in the middle will not normally be on there, either. I put that one together primarily to shoot steel challenge. The magnifier is on there because it's a good place to store it.

Fury HD 5000 (non-AB) vs Razor HD 4000?

[I read the Read This First, and the Wiki, and the LRF FAQ. And I searched.]

I want a laser range finder that can read targets out to a mile. Use will be at the range (goes to 1400 yards) and maybe some (very casual, just for fun) NRL or PRS-style matches. Maybe possibly also deer hunting, from a stand/blind.

I have found good deals on Fury HD 5000 (non-AB) binos ($640) and on a Razor HD 4000 LRF ($290). At least, those seem like good deals.

My question is specifically about the glass between these two.

The Vortex marketing says they both have "HD Optical System".

Does that mean if I zoom the binos to 7X (the same as what the Razor does), I'll get the same image quality?

I want to believe that the Fury has a bigger objective, so even at the same magnification the binos will give me a better view of my target. And then, the longer max magnification means it will be even more better.

But, if the Razor is going to give me a better look at my target, then I don't want to spend the extra on the Fury.

The LRF FAQ mentioned the Fury HD 5000 AB as being a good choice for under $1000. But, that really seemed to be recommending it based on having the AB and didn't really say anything about the glass.

The LRF FAQ also talked briefly about Vortex Razor optics in general and said the glass is "meh".

So, maybe the Fury has the same glass? Which, if it's the SAME glass, that's okay. I just don't want to lose image quality by spending more money for binos.

Thoughts between these two?

Tactical Innovations/TandemKross Manticore X

I put this together back in March.

Tactical Innovations Left-side Charging receiver

DFCO Kung Fu grip

GPO 4-16x44 FFP MRAD scope

Foregrip and scope rings - don't remember the brands

All the rest is TandemKross Manticore X lower and other parts

The whole thing is barely over 4#, with the scope.

I had never heard of GPO before. German Precision Optics. It is really nice. A fantastic option for a 22LR. With a 0 MOA pic rail, it has enough elevation adjustment to shoot out to almost 400 yards with SV (standard velocity) ammo. Reticle is illuminated, with a nice MRAD Xmas tree. Parallax adjusts down to 10 yards. Locking turrets with a zero stop.

I really like that I can put a can on it and hold the bolt shut with my left thumb while shooting. Like that, it is SO ridiculously quiet, even with SV ammo.

I'm going to leave the scope on 'cause I'm going to shoot it in an Appleseed Rimfire KD clinic in November. After that, I'll switch it back to the Holosun 510 red dot I have for it. I really built it to use for shooting Steel Challenge matches.

Samson B-TM finally arrived!

I ordered this stock on January 5 and it was finally delivered today (June 1).

It was worth the wait (to me)! A major upgrade from the 30+ year old Butler Creek folding stock that I had it in with the factory barrel.

Kidd ULW bull barrel, 1.5# single stage trigger, charging handle, and muzzle brake. Now just need my Off Grid Scorpius can to get out of NFA jail. Hopefully, sometime this week.

Tack driver!

I have a better scope that I'll swap in at some point. For now, the old Burris 2-7X is fine.

Belton Gun Club match report

Belton Gun Club, in Belton, SC, had their very first GPA match yesterday.

They did a great job with it! It was 6 stages. Very fun. Very safe. No issues with the scoring.

It might have been their first GPA match, but it was obvious it was not their first practical pistol match.

There were something like 35 shooters in FSO. 51 total shooters. That included a few PCC guys. 2nd place overall (not counting PCCs) was a guy shooting CPI! He was only 6 points behind 1st, who was shooting FSO. Very impressive.

The only disappointing part is that the BGC schedule is already very full. So, for now, they will only be running GPA matches on the 5th Sunday of the month. I.e. 3 or 4 times a year or something like that. Fingers crossed that it is very popular and they find some way to make room in the calendar to run it every month.
