Nerve wracking

Doing some deep v-grooves over here, big-time tool engagement going on as the cut deepens with each pass and keeping a close eye on any burning/scorching.

So of course it's the perfect time for someone nearby to be starting a smokey fire. I don't need the extra stimulus thanks 😲

Leather

Brass is lovely but I don't see enough leatherwork here. IFL engraving leather. Celtic dog collar anyone? C'mon.

AI Assistant.

Context:
I had an historically corrupted model.
Corrupted by inexperienced past me, messing about with linked/external components.
It was 100% unuseable.

All I could do was copy some of bodies out to a new model and start again.
Which went much better as more-recent-me had learned a bit in the interim.

So it's now a working model again but my newer, rebuilt version is the only one I'm going to use.
Curiousity about the assistant got the better of me so I tasked it with clearing the issues this model had.
TLDR: it did.
A few babies had to go out w the bath water, such as every fastener. A few 'components' too.
Being a model of a CNC it has a lot of parts, references and relationships.

So it was a good experiment in that the model is now breathing again. I don't need it, but it was an intereting excersize.

Score out of 100 for the AI Assistant?: 51.
The problem is that almost every answer/response was badly wrong on first attempt.
Such as 'click on 'x' to proceed' where 'x' did not exist.
'Oh yeah' it would say and give a better answer. Every time pretty much.

Interesting for an experiment or 'dev' but nothing like 'prod' just yet...

Toolpath generation in LaserGRBL

Posting for no reason.

I find the way this software sometimes generates the toolpath to be somewhat querky :)
By "way" I'm refering to the ordering I guess. There's nothing wrong with the toolpath, the ordering just seems weirdly arbitrary sometimes. Mainly on long runs with many paths.

My guess is it's spreading out the activity (change 'areas') to even out any imbalances with lube on the slides and/or heat in the job. A very guessy guess that is.

At least I'm entertained while I stare nervously at it engraving expensive stock.

Aperiodic Monotile 2: The Invert

Same sketch profile and settings as used with earlier piece but with inverted pocket selection.

A few small gaps present but a good test nonetheless.

The aim was to explore/test using fine, text-like details.
In a production piece, using a more stable base than knotty pallet-pine, as well as refining the toolpaths' step-downs, feeds and speeds will likely reduce the gaps to negligible.

Cutting board R&D.

Aperiodic Monotile Coaster

Coaster. 90 mm x 20 mm.
Pine base, acacia inlay.
3mm End Mill.
3mm Tapered Ballnose (0.25 mm Dia. x 11º taper).
Corbin Dunn's Fusion VBit Inlay Add-In.

If you want to know what an Aperiodic Monotile is, maybe ask Roger Penrose because I'll likely butcher what are some super-convoluted (but pretty) maths.

10W Diode on Stainless Steel

Shortened the focal length by 10 mm.
Cleaned the lens.
300mm/m travel.
60% (light shading) - 90% (dark shading) power levels.
2 hours.

Looking good.

No keystrokes recognised - Inkscape v1.4.3 - MacOS 10.13.6 High Sierra

There's not even shortcut tips beside the menu items.
Text can be entered into a text object in a document but nothing else, not CMD+O, S, 3, J, CMD+S, you name it; nothing works 😞

I've nuked "Users/Home/Library/Application Support/org.inkscape.Inkscape", no change.
I've nuked anything else I can find that's related to Inkscape, including updating it to 1.4.4

Is there something I've missed?
Is my OS too old to be compatible?

Thanks for reading.

Check out the molten-metal work-holding method.
Appealing to me because I often work with small stuff..

Any reason this should not work with wood?

Really love this function as it seems to do a much better/sharper job than Inkscape's "Trace Bitmap.." I usually use diagonal fill as it looks very nice plus uses both axes simultaneously. Instead of lots of X axis and only a little Y.

Anybody here using LaserGRBL to append Fusion (free version) gcode files together for CNC milling?

I've done it a few times for files/passes that use the same bit.
So far so good.

Any suggestions of pitfalls or problems to look out for?

I've already been doing this for a while for laser jobs so that I can run various kinds subsequently, like etching, cutting, fill, shade variations etc. in one job.
