Also, what are the best mods out there for ES2?

So I've started playing recently with endless space 2 (vanilla for now) with the Sophons. I have well over 600hrs experience playing 4x games (gal civ3,masters of orion series, endless space 1) but boy never ever happened that on normal difficulty the game would wash the floor with me. I have been spawned next to cravers and they have elimiated my fleet completely at turn 80. just got to the point where it's just easier to give up and start a new game with definitely some new strategy and for now probably better to lower the difficulty as long as I don't have a better understanding on the game mechanics. what are your experiences? any startegy ideas you'd be willing to share with me please? or maybe a good guide that I haven't found yet online? cheers, my generals!
