Can I just splice a new rafter tail on this?

This is the only bad rafter tail. I don’t want to sister a board on if I don’t have to because it would bug me aesthetically. I’d like to chop and splice a new end on. Is there any problem with just cutting it off at an angle and screwing a new tail on that obviously isn’t supporting any weight but is purely aesthetic? Like I said, all the other tails are in perfect shape (old gutter seem leaked heavily on this one).

Why do my pipes rattle when my neighbors sprinklers run?

This sound is heard at all fixtures and through my floors in the crawlspace. This only happens when the neighbor’s sprinklers turn on and I think it’s only when one zone is running although when other zones run I still can feel my riser outside surging it just isn’t loud like the video here during that one zone. What could be the cause? We are in SoCal, city water not a well. Pressure is 60psi. Our mains are T’d off the same city main at the curb. Their sprinklers are tied into their riser. Our risers are about 75’ apart. My plumber said he doesn’t really get how their sprinklers would be affecting our pipes. He did mention the neighbors had one valve that looked bad and was leaking. Not sure if that is pertinent.

I might exceed the Roth IRA income limit this year, what do I need to do?

There’s a good chance we may just barely exceed the dual income limit of $242k this year but I have been funding my Roth IRA for the last 2 months. My wife got a sizeable raise, I received a bonus and I have been getting forced OT quite a bit which all are now projecting we will be just over the income limit if the trend continues of my forced OT. I know there is a phase out up to $252k. I plan now to stop funding my Roth IRA and start a backdoor Roth. But do I need to do anything for the money I currently have funded the Roth IRA with? I’ve only got $999 in the account at this time so am I correct to assume we won’t be penalized on that amount since we will stay under $252k combined income for the year?

What are your card game recommendations for a 5 year old?

Our toddler has fallen in love with the Disney Eye Found It card game as well as a game called Piggy Piggy and we are ISO some ideas for other age appropriate games to play. She starts preschool in the fall and so something with counting is a bonus. Preferably a game adults find entertaining as well lol. Thank you!

What grass is growing in my grass?

Hey guys zone 10a(?) SoCal I have what I’m told is marathon blend and I use tall fescue to overseed in spring. I’m not a big lawn care guy and don’t use herbicides as my kids and dog play on the grass daily. I’m just curious what this new grass growing in is? Never had it pop up before. Will it over run my lawn or is it cool to just leave it be? Thanks everyone!

What’s this piece called?

I’m trying to reinstall my window screens and I can’t find these channels anywhere online or in store. Anyone know where I can get them? The ones I pulled off are broken so I can’t use them. There is no barcode or brand name on them

Late to the game, are we doing okay saving for retirement now?

Wife (35f) and I (35m) are starting our retirement journey a little late. We make combined $240k, have 2 kids and a mortgage. Wife has a pension 2.2 at 62 (and started that 10 years ago) and I have my first 401k starting this year (I know dumb me should have started 15 years ago). It’s 11.5% with employer match being effectively 2%. We now have Roth IRAs and max contributions annually starting this year. Total general/emergency savings currently is sitting around $75k and we add $1,500/month towards it and it’s invested in a HYSA at 3.5%.

We own $260k equity in our $1m home that we plan to retire in. Will be paid off at 60yrs old at current payments. It has an ADU bringing in $2k/month (factored into our combined income) but once our children grow up and move out each of them will be given the opportunity to live in it as they save for their own home so I don’t plan to have that income from age ~50-60.

My wife’s pension contribution rate is about 10%. Her Roth contribution is about 7% of her income. My total for Roth and 401k is 18.5%. (I did not include the ADU income in these %). After bills, emergency savings, and retirement savings we have approx $3k remaining for discretionary spending each month.

When I use a compound calculator and set starting funds $0 (since we started this year) with $2,250 contributed monthly and the time 27 years and annual rate 7% it comes out to $2m. That doesn’t include my wife’s Pension (81.4% of her highest years salary)

I think we’re doing things right now that we have started saving but I also feel like maybe we’re missing some big piece of the puzzle and we will end up with less money than we need come retirement (62 is the goal). What are your thoughts? Any advice? Did I completely fuck up my math somewhere and we’re way off basis? Thanks a million guys for any insight, I’m excited to start this journey and learn as much as I can along the way!

Thoughts on this quality of work?

This was a small job. Contractor didn’t bring enough wood so on day 2 the guys brought a handful of scraps from previous jobs and used them to finish the room, lots of chipped edges on those boards and the color was off and lengths were really short. Additionally they left a lot of 1cm gaps between boards. The sealer was rushed in 1 day and is dull and has orange peel. There are scuffs from them being clumsy with the sander. Theres one board along the edge that isn’t nailed and I can pull it out. I am going to glue it down since it’s under a cabinet.

Overall I expected less than perfect from these guys . We have small kids and dogs, this is a kitchen with heavy foot traffic and the rest of our house has old and well worn floors so I am not super bothered but it’s still sad to think this is the quality of work someone would sign off on. I am going over the issues with the owner this week and discussing a discount and will just fill the gashes with wood filler (matching the rest of my home) and maybe see about doing a buff and polish to get the floors smooth

Installing kitchen hardwood floors, do I install them under the oven as well?

Just removed all the appliances from the room tonight as we have demo and install starting tomorrow and it just occurred to me, do I have them install hardwood under the oven? If I don’t, the tile that is there will be about 0.5” taller than the new flooring but you won’t see it as it’s under the oven. If they do install the hardwood, the legs on the oven can be extended to account for the difference so the oven matches the counter height once again. So no issue there.

My question is more so to ask, is it safe to put hardwood floors under an oven? I think it is but my wife thinks it’s a fire hazard. What are your thoughts?

My wife and I still have our Play More plan. We use Disney+ daily with the kids. It’s been a great plan for us. But we’d like to be able to upgrade phones (ours are 4 years old) with trade in offers that aren’t offered on our current plan. I started crunching numbers and the new Unlimited Plus plan is actually $19 cheaper per month. But I noticed that Verizon says it’s a 3 year locked in rate.

So my question is should I anticipate increased costs in the future making my Play More plan the better option long term?

Here is a breakdown of the costs for each plan. Please note I am not including Teacher discount, Internet bundle, Loyalty discount as those will be equal across both plans.

* Unlimited Plus $125

* Apple One Family (plan discount) $20

* Disney+ Premium $20

**$165 total**

* Play more $158

* Apple One family $26

* Disney+ Premium (included in plan) $0

**$184 total**
