How do you actually use cloud storage apps on Mac? (Google Drive, Synology Drive, etc.)

Hi. I know this may sound like a strange question, but I bought my first Macbook three months ago, and I still can't figure out how people normally use cloud storage apps on mac.

As a Windows user, I don't understand why features like on-demand Sync (Synology Drive) or stream files (Google Drive) don't seem to work properly.

I've run into countless issues. For example:

  • Marking folders as available offline doesn't always download them.
  • Sometimes opening an online folder or downloading its contents takes ages, even with a fast internet connection.
  • What really drives me crazy is that every time I open an online folder containing photos in Finder, it immediately starts downloading all of the photos to my SSD. Why if I'm not opening any of the files?
  • Uploading files is another nightmare. Uploading five 1 MB files usually works fine, but backing up gigabytes of photos after a photoshoot is almost impossible. I constantly get upload errors.

Is there something wrong with my Macbook, or are all cloud storage apps broken on mac? Is there any way to make Google Drive and Synology Drive behave more like they do on Windows?

Disable wireless auto connect for motorcycle while keeping it active for car?

Hi. I use wireless Android Auto on two different screens: one in my car and one on my motorcycle. Both paired with Samsung S24 Ultra.

Here is my issue: I want the phone to always automatically connect to AA in my car. However, on my motorcycle, I want to easily disable auto-connect (and auto music play if possible) so it only connects when I want it to. I've looked through the Android Auto settings, but didn't find any option that could help.

Is there any way to block auto-connect for the motorcycle AA only, while keeping the seamless auto-connect in my car?

Synology OpenVPN fails with "peer certificate verification failure" every few months

Hi everyone,

I'm currently away from home and my OpenVPN connection to my Synology NAS suddenly stopped working. This isn't the first time this has happened. It seems like every few months, out of nowhere, the VPN completely breaks down and cuts me off from my home network.

Since I am remote, I do not have direct access to the DSM to export new config file.

On the client side (macOS, Android), I'm consistently getting the "peer certificate verification failure" error. What's interesting, I have never ever configured any certificates on my Synology.

I already found many different "solutions", but none of them has worked. I tried for example:
- adding client-cert-not-required
- adding tls-cert-profile insecure
- changing verify-x509-name line (or I should say adding, as there was not such line in my config)
- changing OpenVPN Connect security level in settings
- using Tunnelblick

Does anyone know what can I do to fix this without access to my network? And how to prevent it from happening every few months?

Hi, I’ve noticed something odd with my new M5 MacBook Air and TP-Link UH9120C hub.

When I plug it into my MacBook, it gets noticeably warm within a few minutes even when absolutely nothing is connected to the hub.

But when I plug the same hub into my Windows PC, it stays completely cold under the exact same conditions (idle, no devices attached).

Is this expected behavior on MacBooks? Curious if anyone else has seen similar behavior.

Hi. I’m trying to work with Lightroom Classic on two computers - a Windows PC (my main machine) and a MacBook. All my photos are stored on a Synology NAS, which I access via SMB. However, I keep separate catalogs locally on each computer.

The problem is that as soon as I import into the Mac any photos that were previously imported on Windows, Lightroom on Windows becomes extremely slow to start. The next time I try to launch it, nothing happens sometimes even for up to 30 minutes. It’s a lottery, sometimes it starts in 1 minute, sometimes 15 or 30. The process appears in task manager and I can see that it heavily uses the network connection to the NAS. I can also hear the NAS drives working intensively, so Lightroom is clearly reading a lot of data.

Why is this happening and how can I fix that? Why is it a problem if catalogs are separate and only source files are shared?

Lightroom also has trouble reading and writing metadata to TIFF files. Sometimes it shows that metadata has been changed and asks whether I want to import or overwrite it, but often neither option works.

At the moment, this issue makes it practically impossible to work with Lightroom across two computers, because I can’t afford to wait half an hour every time it starts.
