Maybe I am missing something here, but people are like mad that this donation counts as a tax break, and some claim it is to dump overvalued stock. To me, it seems like this would only be bad if he is doing it in return for a favor or something like that, but fewer seem to mention that. Anyway, so why is Michael Dell a bad person for doing this? Shouldn't we want more billionaires to give money to children?

The vast vast majority of jobs in tech are boring as fuck and people only do it for the money. Part of the reason the pay is high isn't because of barriers to entry or because you need to be some genius, it's because it is so boring that the average person can't handle doing it all day.

I like the money and feel like looking for a replacement is risky due to being able to control my schedule and stuff at the shitty J while that may not be possible at a new J. I feel like I shouldn't care about the job and should be relaxed all the time, but this J just gets to me due to the idiocy and high level incompetence of the entire organization. How do I stop caring about it? I should be focusing more on j2 cause it pays more... lol. So yeah, also underpaid.

Should I just take the dive and find a new J to replace it???

There are literally entire weeks where I fuck off over 50% of every day and people are happy with me. I do the bear minimum. The only positive thing about me is that I can get things done when they really need to get done. However, this makes me wonder, how bad do you need to be to get fired or piped? Am I just lucky with my Js?

I used always worry about not saving money. I was always frugal, concerned with any wasted money. Always getting the cheapest options for most things I purchased... all to save like 1k/month or some shit because housing, electricity, insurance, etc is so expensive...

However, after more than doubling my income, I pretty much just buy whatever I want and don't worry about a hundred dollars here or there if it makes my life more enjoyable and I am saving wayyyy more money than I did in the past. Sure, is there a bit more stress during working hours? Yeah, but I still slack off a lot more than most people probably.

Regardless, I am just thankful for this sub and to be OE. 🙏

Antis are purely driven by fear. They're like how sometimes an animal will be so scared that it lashes out attacking the one trying to help it or is so paralyzed with fear that they go into shock and don't run away from a predator.

It's not their fault. They typically aren't deep thinkers, and most of their knowledge of AI comes from sci-fi movies where it literally enslaves humanity. Making fun of their fear won't help the situation.

They spend their nights dreaming of a world where musk, Dario, and Altman control everything and all of the peasants are merely slaves begging for scraps because humans are no longer needed. During the day, they ask AI how to overcome their fears, but they become more scared at how good the responses are.

Anyway, I am rambling a bit. Us pros should be explaining to them that even if AI is better than humans at many tasks, there are still a lot of things AI can't do and a lot of reasons for humans still being needed going into the future. ❤️

I feel like it would be a better use of resources to go on crazy vacations multiple times a year or dine at high quality restaurants all the time. Or maybe things like paying for lawncare or house cleaning. Really, anything to make your life more convenient or fun.

During standup today, my manager made an announcement about firing one of our coworkers working multiple jobs. They gave a short rant about how unethical it is and then followed up by saying that they hoped none of the remaining employees would ever do something like that. I'm normally quiet and avoid being noticed, but something just snapped, and I had an outburst. I was like, "Isn't that illegal? I can't believe Jim (fake name) would do that! What is the company going to do to prevent this from happening in the future?!?!?"

I immediately felt like I fucked up just basking in the utter silence. I felt like everyone was staring at me even though no one had their camera on...

Eventually, the manager just responded by saying that it was a shock to them as well while giving me a weird look.

How fucked am I?

I feel like it has to be mostly Russia and China trying to create unrest because no one I know hates AI like all the lunatics online. Am I alone in thinking this?

I feel like it had to be high, like at least 70% or more and the other 30% is concerns about the environment and enshittification. Am I wrong? I'm trying to understand what psychology is behind the extreme anti AI types.

Now, with AI, I can knock out projects, debugging, routine work, etc insanely fast. Before AI, I took my time with things just because I am lazy, but now, I really worry that if I work too fast, people will end up getting laid off. It seems like I am the only person who is able to effectively use AI on my team because I am the only one that knows all of our code bases and infra from memory, so it just makes getting shit done super easy.

Anyone else in a similar situation?

I feel like I wouldn't necessarily get laid off, but they could layoff junior people on my team that basically do nothing day after day.

On one hand, you want to increase your skills and exercise your brain, but on the other hand, why are you wasting your brainpower writing code that I could just have Claude write instead??? Idk what to do

Software engineers are going to be used to take everyone else's jobs. We have been doing it for decades. We destroyed records, VHS, CDs, DVDs, movie rentals etc. We're destroying movie theaters. We destroyed everything related to the old photo industry. We decimated travel agents with online platforms. We destroyed cab drivers and now we are trying to destroy uber drivers with self driving cars. Newspapers and magazines are basically dead. We obliterated retailers and created platforms to assist with purchasing cheap goods from China.

People in tech should stop whining about AI taking our jobs because it isn't. Instead, we are going to be the ones using AI to take over the rest of the industries that we haven't already destroyed. I look forward to the future.

TLDR: all white collar jobs are fuck except for tech people.

What type of things do I need to be careful about? Can you take paternity leave at 2 different companies if the state you live in has no regulation about parental leave? Should I just pretend like it isn't happening and keep working as normal?
