Client wants a "simple" modification

Client: we love the project, but we want the user leaderboard to have clickable profiles.

Me: ok. That will take around-

Client: It is a simple feature. We can just ask claude.

Me:

considers telling them about GDPR risks

so... I need at least 2 days. 4 if you want actually testing.

Also if we need it at /@username I need a bit more time, as our backend is practically static pages with a couple backend calls and that is a big change.

Client: You have 2 hours.

Me: 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

realises the usernames can change constantly, because each user has an edit button.

Proceeds to use username+UUID layout, but ignoring the username entirely.

Client happy. Me paid. Me happy.

Most traders don't realise how much better the S&P can be for them

Pessimistic. I know.

A lot of traders I see day to day seem to think their 10% in a year is an insanely impressive gain. The S&P was up over 20% most years I heard that. By no means should you take this as an insult. When you learn there is risk and the potential upside is way lower in the S&P than small/mid cap firms. At the same time it is important to make that comparison.

You can compare your portfolio with the S&P or other index funds over the last 10 years here:

Take a look and let me know what you find.

What if your portfolio was an ETF?

Ok. Sometimes I sit down and wonder, if I copied my exact portfolio as an ETF what would it look like?

So, as an update to an existing (free) site we added this as a feature. Build your own custom ETF and see what happens if you backdate it.

My personal portfolio actually lost to the S&P by just 5%, which is surprisingly close.

Google antigravity has insane limits

I will preface this by saying I am prinarily a Claude Code and Codex user. I was asked to make a website for my dad. Realising he has a gemini pro+ subscription or something like that I took him through downloading antigrav. I am used to shared limits. So he is actively making his website with antigravity.

His limit stays the same.

I google it.

He has separate limits for web and antigravity.

I check how much he used.

Still 99% remaining.

You guys have some insane limits. I asked Claude to track down a bug. 1min 30secs of thinking later my 5x plan has run out of 5hr window.

Ridiculous.

I cried today

Was in a presentation today about managing personal finance. All going great. Then we get to the last 10 minutes, where someone else goes up and attempt to advertise their "app".

Ill preface this by saying I LOVE VIBECODING, but I know security flaws etc when I see them. I know how to set up SSL, UFW/firewall and have no objections to going in and rewriting code by hand if it isn't to the right standard.

So they go up and show us the app...

Glassmorphism (at least they made it pixelated to match the app),

Phrases like “revolutionizing the future of personal finance"

Pill-shaped badge above the title.

And the worst part is, they used replit. Their auth flow used replit and required login via google/github and then replit. Which app forces you to login twice? Oh. And it didn't work on mobile. At all.

I know what you are thinking... are they 12 year olds? No. These are full blown adults. As my profile clearly shows we use AI a lot, but this was too far. A 5 minute slop project being sold to investors is crazy.

Safe to say I got up there and then. (I meant got up out of there, not got up on stage. Im not that confrontational.) (No one went up to talk to them after their speech, because we could all tell.)

Why GoPro fell apart. Blame the owner

GoPro is the most honest example of a company killing itself through its own managment decisions. It dominated an industry it had created, but after the owner cashed out he stopped trying and the company fell into disrepair. The $11 billion giant is now worth just $150 million.

Its market share fell from 75% to just 20%, as competitors like DJI and Insta360 entered the market with real innovation.

The companies cash reserves are down to $50 million and it has laid off another 20% of its remaining staff in a desperate restructuring attempt. Its auditor has warned there is "substantial doubt" about GoPro's ability to continue operating over the next year.

In the words of the analysis conclusion:

"Now, a pioneer that once captured the world's imagination was brought down by its own refusal to innovate, allowing more agile competitors to seize the market. From an $11 bn giant, GoPro is now a penny stock fighting for survival."

The death of SaaS - The Economist

So, when most people say SaaS is dying we just smile and tell them to go bother someone else, but when it is the economist you kinda have to pay attention.

The article literally begins with:

"While typing away at a WeWork in San Francisco recently, your correspondent spied a plane flying across the skyline trailing a banner. “saas is dead”, it declared in huge letters. The software developers with whom he was sharing the co-working space also noticed. “Thanks for reminding us,” one groaned."

So, do you really think SaaS is dead or is the worst over?

Fear of the SaaSpocalypse is tormenting techland

Do we really check library security?

PyPi's filtering isn't cutting it. We all know it. I know the people about to say to just use the popular libraries that have community moderation.

The recent claude code injection hack in Torch has proved that isn't a solution.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Python/s/2lwDYSv0eT

And scanning packages are either unmaintained or maintained by one dev in the middle of nowhere.

https://pypi.org/project/safety/

So, I honestly ask you, short of reading each libraries code by hand or avoiding them entirely how do you stay safe?

Sandbox enviroments? Winging it? Hope?
