The Battle for Rome, followed by total victory over the papacy

This battle was a real slog, and I nearly lost it near the end. Then I got my cardinal elected pope the next turn, as well as a ceasefire with their desperate government. All in all, a decisive victory for the Norman knights of Sicily.

Visited Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Little White House in Warm Springs, GA

If you’ve never been, I highly recommend it. Some of the artifacts they have at the museum are truly incredible. (I had never seen Roosevelt’s final unfinished portrait in person.) The staff were also remarkably knowledgeable and helpful. This place is a really neat hidden gem.

Edit: I should mention that the house itself is currently undergoing renovations, unfortunately, so we couldn’t enter the actual house (something about needing to update the old electrical wiring due to a fire risk). But the staff presented a slideshow and guided us through a 30-minute virtual tour and told us more about so many aspects of the house than we ever probably would have learned if we had just done a walkthrough. Photos are of artifacts from the museum on-site, which is not actually part of the house.

My copy of the July 1, 1940 edition of Life Magazine, immediately following the fall of France.

Thought this sub might appreciate it. A snapshot of a truly unique moment in modern history, and more than a year before the United States entered the conflict.

Nothing crazy, but I guess this is my sign to throw 40% of my winnings at that $1 billion Powerball

Finally finished with the long campaign for the Holy Roman Empire

Marched on Rome for the final act of the campaign and took it easily. The Holy Roman Empire now somewhat lives up to its name. And Poland is still somehow my vassal after all this time. This was a fun campaign.

First time I’ve successfully acquired a vassal

I basically inflicted several devastating defeats and territorial losses on Poland, and they finally caved. I was very surprised and relieved because Poland is where the cream of my armies were concentrated. So I sent them west to deal with the threats there.

It’s been a strange campaign. I forced Portugal into a peace agreement after taking Pamplona. Scotland conquered most of the British Isles, but I’ve whittled them down to a couple regions. England, Milan, and I also conquered and partitioned France, and Milan betrayed me soon afterwards (big surprise). Thankfully, they only took Marseille, so I don’t have too much to conquer. But they’ve been very stubborn defenders, and I haven’t broken through yet.

My highest-scoring victory ever (Emperor difficulty, Marathon speed, small map)

Time to try for Immortal, I guess.

First victory on Marathon speed

Built the Statue of Liberty at the end to clinch the victory 🗽

How do you alter your strategy when playing a game on Marathon speed?

One of the issues I most frequently encounter on Marathon speed is that the longer time it takes to produce anything seems to also inherently raise the difficulty, even if you’re playing on the same difficulty as a game on standard speed. In particular, it seems like the cheats that the game grants to AI civs have an outweighed effect on the game because of how much longer everything takes to accomplish. How do you guys go about addressing this problem, especially in early game?

Thoughts on Star Wars Galaxies?

I played SWG back in the day and really enjoyed it. It was a vibrant online community and was very unique, from the memorable main and side quests to the versatile selection of different classes and planets to explore. Is anyone here still playing it?

Star Wars: Bounty Hunter deserves a good remake

Star Wars: Bounty Hunter is one of my favorite video games set in the Star Wars universe, and I think it would really benefit from a thoughtful and creative remake. The game itself is pretty linear, and its age shows in a lot of ways (especially when marked bounties or random enemies just run off a cliff).

This is a game that I think could really benefit from an open world. There’s so much opportunity to expand the world and add side quests to build the in-game universe further and give it more depth. On top of that, being able to actually use the credits you earn from bounties for upgrading gear and weapons, or maybe going to a cantina, would add so much more to this game. While the secondary bounties are kind of their own side quests, they almost feel like an afterthought. I think expanding these into full on side quests would be a great improvement.

As far as the open world concept goes, I think making each chapter its own mini open world would be the easiest and most efficient way to do it. I still like to revisit Bounty Hunter every now and then, but every time I do, I notice so many opportunities for improvement.
