Calculus BC student keeps on failing her tests but the teacher doesn't let students take their graded tests home.

My student keeps on saying that the material on the tests is different than what is on the homework, study guides, and textbook. Like only 2 or 3 out of 10 questions had anything to do with what was in the homework, study guides, or textbook. But because she isn't allowed to take her graded test home, I can't verify this. I can only take her word for it.

I will say that she does quite well on her homework and she has great study habits and note-taking skills. It seems like she's doing everything correctly when it comes to mentality, but somehow that just isn't translating into her test scores. Her last unit was on techniques of integration. We had a 3 hour session where we went over what I thought was every type of integration problem a student could expect from this unit in a Calc BC class, and she was able to talk me through them and explain her strategy for each one. We went over the homework and study guides her teacher provided, and had extra time to go into the textbook and look at the flowchart for how to solve integration problems. But she still failed the test anyways.

A command to set the volume of the currently playing music, similarly to the minecraft:audio/music_volume environment attribute found in Pale Gardens

pale_gardens.json contains a line responsible for fading the music volume to zero when the player enters the Pale Gardens biome. When the volume reaches zero, the music stops. The line can be edited to set the music volume to any floating point number. This functionality can be extended to any other biome by editing their respective biome.json files in a datapack.

I recommend that a command be added to the game that fades the currently playing sound to the specified volume whenever the command is run. It might look something like /setsoundvolume <target> <sound category> <volume> <fade time>.

The motivation for adding this command is that it would give datapack creators more control over the sound system. Right now, datapack creators can use /playsound and /stopsound to control music playback, but /stopsound ends music rather abruptly. Although we can slowly fade music to zero depending on biome, a datapack creator may want music to fade to specified volume upon a more broad array of conditions.

Personally I want this command because I am working on a datapack + resource pack for my world where each song in the OST can only play under specific conditions. If a sound event starts playing based on the player meeting the right conditions, but shortly later the player no longer meets those conditions, then I want to be able to stop that sound event from playing, but not as abruptly as /stopsound does. A command to fade the sound volume would be particularly helpful for my datapack in such situations.

One such example is when the player is underwater, and one of the underwater-exclusive songs begins playing, but then when the player comes back up, the underwater music is still playing and no longer fits the environment the player is in. Having a command to fade out the music volume would help me to address this issue in my world.

Make beach generation more consistent

Right now, beach generation is chaotic and it doesn't look great in my opinion. Here are some examples.

https://preview.redd.it/q0ib08h6jnkh1.png?width=2256&format=png&auto=webp&s=1a45c804db36865ce2568395c852ef29c04e5fdf

In rivers, there are basically no beaches. Just random splotches of sand, clay, gravel, and dirt all thrown together. It looks chaotic.

https://preview.redd.it/pum01uegjnkh1.png?width=2256&format=png&auto=webp&s=a7a71368cd07c77ed831f42ba21a2fc457862653

Some biomes don't even generate with a beach separating it from the ocean. If it does have a beach, it is also a random splotch of sand.

Here is what I propose. The top layer of terrain that generates within 3 blocks of sea level near oceans, rivers, and lakes should often generate as either a sand beach or a gravel beach. Gravel beaches should be more common in cold biomes and sand beaches should be more common in warm biomes. When next to an ocean, they should have their biome set as beach and override whatever biome was there before. Here are some examples of what that might look like:

I need a compact 20-second (400 game tick) timer that starts on command and resets itself when done

The easiest design for me to understand is repeater spam, but that's not very compact. Right now I'm trying to figure out how to rig the etho clock so that it begins when I give it a 2-tick pulse and resets after 1 cycle, and I'm stuck.

I have tried doing a bit of tactical googling but I haven't seemed to find anything that fits the specifications. When searching for "minecraft redstone timer circuit", my search results are clocks (i.e. circuits that repeat indefinitely) rather than timers.

Thinking of moving to the PNW after I finish school, need recommendations for nice cities or towns to move to

I live in Southern California right now and there's a lot that I don't like about it.

  1. Very car-dependent. I get around by a combination of bicycle and public transit. I've been hit by cars while cycling twice before and it takes hours to get places by public transit that would otherwise be a 20 minute drive.
  2. It is a sparsely populated suburb with nothing really going on.
  3. Too hot for too many months of the year. I sweat buckets just from existing most of the time. It's becoming worse every year due to climate change.
  4. Too sunny (I have Irish skin and I sunburn extremely easily).
  5. Unaffordable because it's near some very nice beaches except that I don't even go to the beach that often. I just happen to have been born and raised here.

After I finish school I plan to work as a high school math teacher or community college math professor. Are there any towns or cities that would hit some of the following points? I realize I'll probably have to compromise on some:

  1. Decent public transit and cycling infrastructure
  2. More people around
  3. Temperature that is anywhere from mild to cool to freezing cold for most months of the year.
  4. Not too sunny. It should be common for there to be overcast or rainy days.
  5. Less unaffordable than Southern California. I imagine that it will be cheaper the further inland I go.

I've been eyeballing Seattle as an option. It hits most of the points. It has a better walkability score, higher population density, and better weather than the city I live in. I've visited Seattle before and it's definitely somewhere I would live given the choice. The only thing is that I've read that it is not very affordable. I might just have to put up with that though.

Are there any other cities I might want to consider?

Reducing the roster down to 52 characters.

Philosophy:

  • Cut non-recurring characters (Characters who only starred in one game and have not appeared in subsequent games). Popular series that only have non-recurring main characters may have representatives from their most recent game.
  • Cut characters who haven't had a main appearance in decades
  • Use modern incarnations of recurring characters
  • Reduce redundancy; The same character should not appear twice on the roster
  • Characters that are nearly exactly the same (echo fighters and semi-clones) should be merged into one fighter with several alt skins (a la Olimar and Alph)
  • Avoid over-representation of series
  • 3rd-party characters should "fit in" with the existing Nintendo characters on the roster. This comes down to subjective opinion.
  • Cut characters that originate from another fighting game. Kind of an extension of the previous rule.
Fighter Keep or Cut Reasoning
Mario Keep
Luigi Keep
Peach Keep
Bowser Keep
Dr. Mario Make into an alt skin of Mario Non-recurring character from 1990 that is also redundant with Mario

Struggling to grasp the concept and usefulness of uncomputable/undefinable reals

Definable/computable real number: A real number whose decimal expansion can be calculated to exact precision or approximated to arbitrarily small precision via an algorithm/formula with finitely many instructions/symbols from a finite alphabet.

Undefinable/uncomputable real number: A real number that isn’t definable/computable. Its decimal expansion can be thought of as an infinite string of random digits.

Pi is an example of a definable/computable number because we can approximate it by measuring the circumference of a circle and dividing it by its diameter, and this approximation improves with the accuracy of our measurement.

There is no known example of a distinct undefinable/uncomputable number. If there was, then that number would be definable and we would have a contradiction.

My question is, since we can’t point to a single example of an undefinable/uncomputable number, how do we even know they exist on the real number line? Is it that we need to assume they exist in order to get a logically consistent definition of things like continuity and areas under curves? What interesting results do we get from assuming that undefinables/uncomputables exist?

The highest levels of math I’ve taken are Calc 3, Intro to Linear Algebra, and Discrete Math, so maybe I just haven’t gotten to the part where undefinable/uncomputable numbers become relevant.

How long do you date before becoming boyfriend and girlfriend?

I don’t really know what I’m doing and I’m making this shit up as I go. How do you know when to “officially” consider yourselves in a relationship? I want to make sure I’m not going too fast nor too slow.
