How much does the choice of Grundschule affect a child’s chances of being accepted to a Gymnasium?

We live in Baden-Württemberg. My daughter will turn 5 by the end of this year, and I’ve started looking into Grundschulen. Unfortunately, we’ve only heard negative things about the one in our catchment area.
Right now, we see two options:
Enroll her at SIS Swiss School, which would cost around €1,000 per month.

Move to a different part of the city where the local public Grundschule has a much better reputation.
The second option seems like the more sensible choice, but it also means the hassle of moving and finding a suitable apartment.

I’m prepared to do that if it’s truly worthwhile, but before making such a big decision I’d love to hear from parents who have been through this.
How important is the choice of Grundschule in the long run? Does it significantly affect a child’s chances of getting into a Gymnasium, or is it more about the child’s own performance regardless of the elementary school?
Thank you!

Karcher wash cleaner doesn’t suck well

Purchased a Karcher SE5100 in 2023 in Germany. Since then, I have washed my sofa only once a year, about three to four times with the machine.

The last time I sprayed detergent to my sofa and tried to start the vacuum, it powered on with the usual noise but provided very weak suction. At first, I suspected the pipe, but even after detaching it completely and placing my hand over the main unit’s opening, suction remained poor. After running it for about 10 minutes, it suddenly began working normally again. Then, about a month later—today—suction was very weak once more. My two-year warranty has expired, repairs would cost at least half the machine’s price.
How can I troubleshoot it myself?

B1 Certificate is the only thing left for me to get a citizenship… and I have a very limited time

Hi everyone,
I’m living in Germany based on a marriage visa with a German citizen. I fulfill every point of the citizenship except the language certificate.

I work full-time from 10:00 to 18:00. Learning something after work with 2 kids seems unbelievable.

I’m also looking for a native German teacher who could prepare me for the exam. My ideal lesson time would be between 8:15 and 9:45 in the morning.

Where would you recommend looking for a teacher? Any websites, apps, or local services you’ve had good experiences with?

Thanks!

B1 Certificate is the only thing left for me to get a citizenship… and I have no time for it

My first question is: is there any way to bypass this?

I’m at a breaking point with Apple

… and WWDC is Apple’s last chance to convince me.

I’ve been in the Apple ecosystem since 2007 (my first iPhone) and all-in since 2013. That’s nearly 20 years of loyalty.

But today, I’m using Gmail because Apple Mail is … slow, has weak search, and feels years behind the competition. I’m using Google Calendar because it integrates seamlessly with Gmail and simply works better with Gemini.

At this point, the only things keeping me with Apple are iCloud Family Sharing and the fact that everyone in my family uses an iPhone.

I’ve already migrated my entire photo library to Google Photos. The switch is no longer a technical challenge, it’s just a decision.

If Apple comes to WWDC with another round of vague AI promises and half-finished features like it did in 2024, I’m out.

Google is giving me significantly more value today, including 5TB of storage, while Apple still charges premium prices for anything above 2TB. More importantly, Google’s AI, search, email, calendar, and photo ecosystem feel like they’re moving forward, while Apple seems stuck playing catch-up.

Tomorrow needs to be more than marketing. Apple needs to show real progress. Otherwise, for the first time in almost two decades, I’ll seriously consider leaving the ecosystem.

Do you actually use Lightroom HDR on the iPad? The AVIF exports look completely different.

Hi guys,
TL;DR: Exporting HDR AVIFs from Lightroom to an iPad is a broken experience. The colours and highlights look completely different from the edit on iPad Air M2

The Problem
I am editing raw files from a Sony A7 IV in Lightroom CC v11.3.3 using the HDR mode. I export them as AVIF files with the HDR box ticked to retain the gain map. The goal is to view the extended dynamic range on an iPad.
Instead, the image in the Apple Photos app looks completely different from the Lightroom preview.
Sometimes it shows HDR as unavailable and after restart or the application it shows back HDR again.

My Questions
- Are you actually using HDR exports for iPad viewing in the real world?
- If yes, what is your exact workflow to ensure the image looks correct across devices?
- Do you bypass AVIF entirely and just export standard dynamic range JPEGs to avoid the hardware fragmentation?

Is Christopher Nolan's 15/70mm IMAX format actually better quality, or is it just clever marketing?

Just watched the 60 Minutes feature on Christopher Nolan shooting his upcoming film The Odyssey entirely on 15/70mm IMAX film.
It got me thinking about the technical reality versus the PR hype. Is shooting and projecting on 15-perforation 70mm film genuinely superior, or is it just an expensive marketing gimmick to drive premium ticket sales?

Toddler vs. 30kg DALI towers: How do you secure heavy floorstanders from tipping?

My 1.5-year-old son climbs and pulls on everything in the house. Today he knocked over a table and injured himself badly. Now I’m paranoiac: I have 30kg DALI floorstanders. A tip-over at this weight could be even fatal.
How do you securely anchor heavy speakers?
I need practical, tested way to lock these down.

▲ 13 r/unRAID

Trying to land on a NAS and torn between three options:
• Synology DS425+
• Ubiquiti UNAS Pro
• DIY Unraid build
No matter how I spec the Unraid box, once I add the perpetual license it clears 1500 EUR. And that’s still consumer-grade hardware with no ECC and no 24/7 rating.
Here’s what I priced out:
• Case: Fractal Define 7
• Mobo: ASRock B650M Pro RS or ASUS TUF B650-PLUS
• RAM: 1x32GB DDR5 (non-ECC)
• Cache: 2x WD Red SN700 NVMe, RAID1
• 10GbE NIC: TP-Link TX401 or ASUS XG-C100C
• PSU: be quiet! Pure Power 12 M 550W
• Hardware total: ~1300-1400 EUR
• Plus Unraid Pro license on top
So I’m paying 1500+ EUR for a consumer board that wasn’t built to run 24/7. Synology and UNAS Pro start to look a lot more rational at that point.
Question for the community: is a DIY Unraid build still worth it in 2026, or has turnkey caught up enough that the math no longer favors building? What are you running and what made you pick it?

▲ 25 r/homelab

Picked this up on eBay: it’s a Lenovo ThinkCentre M70t Gen 5, brand new.
Specs look solid for a low-power homelab box, and my plan is to run Unraid on it. Main use case: storage + a few containers.

Processor
1x 13th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-13400 Processor (Core™ i5-13400)
Memory
1x 16 GB DDR5-5600
Operating System
Windows 11 Pro (DE: German)
Hard Drive
1x 512 GB SSD PCIe
Optical Drive
1x
Wired Network
1x
Ports
1x 3-in-1 Media Card Reader
Graphics
1x Intel® UHD Graphics 730
Case Form Factor
Tower
Warranty Included
3YR Onsite

Problem: the stock case feels like a dead end. Limited drive bays, not very NAS-friendly.
What I want to figure out:
Can I move this into a different case (something with proper HDD capacity)?
Is the motherboard standard enough (mATX/ATX), or is this classic Lenovo proprietary pain?
PSU compatibility issues to expect?
If it’s transferable, this could be a ridiculously cheap NAS build. If not, I may have to rethink the whole setup.
Anyone tried migrating one of these?
