Using Surveillance (WD AV-GP) Drives for Data? MergerFS + SnapRAID

My home server is running OpenMediaVault with MergerFS + SnapRAID. I'm not much of a hoarder, so my array of 15 year old WD Green drives with 100K+ hours is still fine to store all my data. However, recently I got a bunch of low hour WD AV-GP surveillance drives for cheap. I know they are still older drives, but they are much lower hours (~5000 hrs) compared to my current drives, and higher capacity so I can reduce my pool size if I consolidated (save power).

I'm reading conflicting info with regards to using surveillance drives for data. Some people say you may suffer reduced error correction abilities while others say they've been using them just fine. Since I am using SnapRAID with regular scrubs, that should be ok from a data integrity perspective? I don't care too much about performance, data integrity would be my #1.

Thoughts? Any other disadvantages to consider?

Business Account - Tax Payment Options Bug

I just switched over to EQ Bank for my business account and noticed the tax payment system seems flawed for trying to pay Provincial and Federal taxes for my corporate year end.

Provincial: It seems like provincial tax payments are not supported. Is there an ETA in which this feature would be available? It is highly inconvenient that this cannot be done.

Federal: We are required to pay corporate income tax (code: TXINS) and GST (code: GST-P). However, these codes are not directly shown in the available CRA payee selection. EQ Bank seems to use different descriptors, but these codes are normally pretty standard in other financial institutions so not having them shown makes it confusing to figure out which option I should pay to.

So my question is, can someone confirm how do I figure out which payee to use for federal taxes?EQ

Range Rover Sport Expedition/Offroad Build? Thoughts?

Hi guys, I'm in the market for a truck/SUV and was looking at used Range Rover Sports. This is something I would like to take on outdoor adventures, and what I liked about RRS is the combination of luxury with a full time AWD drivetrain that also has 4x4 and low range, which is not too common in many smaller SUVs. Don't really want a big gas guzzler that doesn't fit in parkades which is why I was leaning toward RRS over Discovery/Defender. I would also prefer used, not only due to depreciation, but I wouldn't want to bang up a new ride with fresh paint.

Mostly wanted to get feedback on aftermarket support and accessories. There does not seem to be as many accessories for the RRS such as skid plates and whatnot? Even the standard roof rack rails I noticed doesn't seem to support alot of weight.

As for wheel/tire choices, it seems like 19" is the smallest wheel that I can fit, depending on trim level. I really would prefer the smallest wheel possible with big sidewalls, even steelies for my winter setup but I don't think that's possible. Also, in the various 19-20" sizes there does not seem to be alot of selection for AT tires, of which that alone could be a deal breaker.

Maintenance wise, I'm comfortable with doing most of my own work short of pulling the engine/transmission or anything requiring $$$ specialty tools. Not a fan of having air suspension, but replacing those parts doesn't seem like a big deal if need be (don't have to deal with spring compressors).

So in general, would love to hear your thoughts and anything I may want to pay attention to? Thanks!

Topton 1264-NAS Motherboard: M2 NVME SSD Issue (drives not recognized)

I have a Topton 1264-NAS motherboard which is N150 based. There's little weird nuances in this board that I'm slowly discovering, one of which seems to be that although it has two M.2 slots, I cannot seem to use them both at the same time with various NVME SSDs.

Per the manual here, it seems slot #1 is NVME/NGFF, and slot #2 is NVME only.

https://doku.floriantales.fr/_media/informatique/nas_diy_2024/jonsbo_topton_nas_build/bkhd1264nasv1.0productmanual_zh_en.pdf

Examples of the weirdness:

  1. I can install two NVME SSDs, of which they both show up in the BIOS but when I try to boot into Linux or a recovery environment, one drive does not appear at all entirely.

  2. I previously had OpenMediaVault installed on a Samsung MZVLB256HBHQ-000H1, of which the system boots fine when installed in either slot #1 or #2. I cloned the system to a Micron MTFDKBA256TGE-1BL1AABHA, but now this SSD only gets recognized when installed in slot #2.

  3. Not sure if related, but occasionally the server would hang with the error message:

"nvme 0000:06:00.0: unable to change power state from D3cold to D0, device inaccessible"

I tried setting nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0, and disabling ASPM with no luck. The reason why I swapped over to the Micron SSD was to rule out it potentially being an issue with the Samsung SSD. Has been stable so far, but we'll see.

Wondering if anyone has any ideas? Is it due to some sort of lane sharing issue with limited PCIe lanes?

SSD shows up in BIOS but not in Linux?

Would like to get some thoughts on this. I am trying to install an SSD into my motherboard. It shows up just fine in the BIOS. However, in my OS (Openmediavault 8, Debian 13) it does not show up as an option. I also tried booting into Rescuezilla (Ubuntu 24) and it also does not show up either.

I've checked my BIOS settings and there does not seem to be anything that looks off. The OS drive is currently a Samsung SSD which functions just fine. I also tested to make sure it wasn't the M2 slot that's defective. The SSD also works fine in an external USB enclosure.

Any thoughts? The hardware I'm running is:

SSD: 128GB Union Memory 128GB PCIe gen3 NVME SSD (p/n: SSS0L25188)

Motherboard: BKHD-1264-NAS25030388 (N150 chipset)

Help! Cloning OMV from 256GB to 128GB SSD. Boot problems

Forgive me as I'm a newbie to Linux.

I am running OpenMediaVault 8 (Debian 13) and I am trying to migrate it from the existing 256GB SSD OS drive to a smaller 128GB SSD.

I only have one M2 to USB dock, so I used DiskGenius (on my Windows machine) to "backup disk to image file" from the 256GB SSD. Then I used the "restore image file to disk" to the new 128GB SSD. Everything seemed to work properly and it automatically resized the partition, except on boot it gives me the error (for each HDD I have installed):

error: disk 'hd4,gpt2' not found

AI is saying I need to repair the bootloader by booting into a recovery environment? I'm not that comfortable with command line stuff, so wondering if someone could explain if this is the case and point me in the right direction.

Alternatively (ideally), is there a better way to clone the drive in a manner where it's immediately bootable without having to do any further config?

Thanks!

Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Ultra - Wi-Fi Hangs

I just got a Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Ultra Aura Edition with a Intel BE211 wifi chip. I've noticed occasionally, the wifi (5Ghz) will hang. This does not happen with any other device on my network.

I have tried the following:

Host side (router) side: switching between 5GHz high and low, toggling between 20/40/80Mhz channel bandwidths.

Laptop side: disabling network adapter power savings, toggling between auto/fixed 20Mhz channel bandwidths.

Still no luck. Any thoughts?

Generic Zigbee Sensor Battery Level Incorrect (Ni-Mh)

I have a bunch of cheap Zigbee sensors (the sort of generic stuff you find on Aliexpress and Amazon) such as motion and water detection. They work great, my only complaint is that I'm using Ni-Mh cells which have a lower voltage than alkaline and so they don't seem to report the correct level. The level reports lower than actual. This doesn't bug me that much, but the problem is when I charge the battery and put it back in, the device still shows the old battery level and doesn't go back up to 100%. Reconfiguring the device doesn't seem to work, only an actual removal of the device within ZHA and reinstall.

Any thoughts?

Best Bi-Directional OBD Scan Tool?

It's been a while since I had a new vehicle, so I am new to this whole bi-directional manufacturer specific OBD thing when it comes to DIY maintenance. I have a 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander gas and am wondering if you guys have recommendations for a bi-directional scanner that would allow near dealer level MUT III functionality. Ideally as cost effective as possible. Lifetime updates would be nice, and also as good of a universal functionality as possible for servicing other vehicles.

Example of the sort of DIY work that would require a scanner:

  1. Servicing the rear parking brakes

  2. Re-learning the battery after replacing it

  3. Resetting the CVT and AWD coupling after changing the fluid. It is my understanding that these systems may monitor fluid degradation so it is necessary to reset some sort of counter when filling with new fluid.

Love to hear some thoughts?
