Have you heard of 'Stori Sydyn'?

Lots of these small books are available online for £1 and are very suitable for learners (I'd say Canolradd +). They're mainly produced by Y Lolfa but I think there's a few other publishers who do them too.

Cancel your direct debit to Thames Water and pay monthly instead

Hi all,

Thames Water increased my bills from £26 pcm to £78. I've just changed my direct debit to monthly card payments instead and it's gone down to £40.

Ask them to change yours and see how much it'll go down by.

Did you know that you can request your birthplace to be in Welsh on a UK passport?

I was just looking at my passport and read 'Castell Nedd' as my birthplace. I forgot that a few years ago I requested for it to be written in Welsh rather than English and it's appeared as such in all subsequent passports. It seems to be a little-known fact.

Did you guys know you can ask for it to be in Welsh rather than English?

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/place-and-country-of-birth/place-and-country-of-birth-accessible

"Place of birth: Welsh language

If a customer is born in Wales, they can choose to have the name of their place of birth recorded in Welsh, even if their place of birth is not recorded in Welsh on the documents they have provided.

For example, if the customer’s document shows their place of birth as Carmarthen but they ask for their passport to show the Welsh spelling Caerfyrddin, we can show the Welsh spelling of their place of birth in their passport.

We cannot record a place of birth in Welsh, if the place of birth is outside of Wales."

New stats on attainment in reading and numeracy in Wales

The Welsh Government has just released new statistics on attainment in reading and numeracy based on our national tests, and they make for grim reading.

There remains a huge gap between how children eligible for free school meals (EFSM) are developing compared to their peers.

We won’t go through all the figures - you can find them here - but to give a few, in 2024/25 for Welsh reading the gap was:

  • Year three: 35.2 months
  • Year seven: 41.1 months
  • Year eight: 45.4 months

For English reading in the same year:

  • Year three: 14.8 months
  • Year seven: 42.5 months
  • Year eight: 31.9 months

In some cases, our most disadvantaged learners are more than three years behind their peers at a very young age.

Elderly person asking for help - which services shall I contact?

Hi all,

Whilst out walking, a very elderly, frail, deaf man stopped me outside his house to ask me to go and buy him some bread and butter. He struggled to get back into his house and I had to help him back into his house, but he told me that he lived alone.

It was hard to speak to him as he was very deaf but I assume that he therefore struggles to get his supplies and severe mobility issues.

Do I report this to the local council? If so, which department should I report to? Would this be something for AgeUK too?

Thanks
