(spoilers) questions about Elias and the institute

(I meant to make this whole thing a spoiler but now I can't see if it's worked? Sorry.)

So I have a couple of questions about how the contracts work for the Magnus institute.

First of all, do we think that the inability to quit is archive specific, or institute-wide? I've seen both interpretations but I'm just wondering if anyone knows any evidence either way.

I personally assumed only the archive was affected, simply because the archives seem to be where everything all goes to shit, and I also thought people would notice if it applied to the rest of the institute. Like there must be quite a large number of employees, and if NONE of them are ever allowed to quit? Everyone is stuck working there forever? I feel like it would do something quite odd to the atmosphere. All the archival staff seem to feel pretty okay about working for the institute until they move to the archives.

Second question: elias' eyes. Jonah Magnus used transplanting his eyes in order to body hop. God knows how he even manages this procedure (any ideas?). But does this mean that all his mortality is in his eyes? If "Elias"s eyes were destroyed, I assume he would die. Would it be different between the Elias body and the Jonah body? Would he die instantly because the Jonah body was only kept alive by the supernatural protection of the eye, given how old his body is? Turn into dust or something?

The way I see it, Elias!body would probably die instantly as presumably og Elias is dead and now nothing is tying him to Jonah Magnus' life force or whatever so he's just a corpse.

Then either Jonah Magnus' body itself instantly expires and decomposes or something since its protection is gone, OR it stays alive technically for a little bit but does quickly of natural causes because no one is supposed to be that old.

did his body actually keep aging like it was mortal that whole time?

I feel like some of the technicalities of his mortality are probably addressed in the last ever episode but despite my frequent relistening to the rest of the show, I've never been able to make myself relisten to that one lmao

Any one-and-done products?

I know this is somewhat sacrilegious and against the spirit of this sub. I love beautiful colourful sparkly nails.

But I'm wondering if there are any products out there that are good for if you need something REAAALLY simple. Like really simple.

I like to keep something on my nails at all times to reinforce them, but there are times when I am too pressed for time and energy to do a good job with multiple coats for opacity and cleanup.

I'm picturing something slightly tinted nude-ish but not fully opaque, this way when it chips if I don't have time to fix it then it won't look too glaringly obvious. Potentially marketing itself as a care product. If it doesn't have a glossy finish I guess I could stretch to a topcoat.

Bonus points if it's not too stinky somehow. One of my limiting factors is living with someone who is sensitive to chemical smells, which also motivates me to be able to do quick manicures.

Am I overthinking it and I should just buy a basic nude polish and cut my usual corners by not using base and topcoat?

ETA yay, thank you everyone, you always come through :)

I made tma themed rooms on finch because I can

I spent far too long having fun making fear entity themed rooms on the very wholesome bird app, finch. I was particularly enjoying trying to pervert the items made for cute themes into something horrifying.

Personally I think the flesh room is inspired, truly my pièce de résistance. I was running out of steam for the last few. Honestly the stranger one is only there for completeness, otherwise I wouldn't be sharing it. I went fully off track there. What was my logic? No idea. It sucks. And is probably a sign that finch should do a circus themed month and help me out.

EDIT oh it didn't let me add all the pictures D: oh well lol, rip to the hunt, the buried, the web, the extinction, and whichever other one I can't remember rn.

EDIT2: ok ignore the last edit, it just loaded wacky

Different medication combos with the NHS

I have ADHD, autism, and depression. None of the ADHD meds I've tried (atomoxetine, elvanse, methylphenidate) helped me, and depression meds I've tried (sertraline, escitalopram, mirtazapine) haven't done much for me either. So I'm currently taking nothing.

Whenever I look online for advice/a little hope, I see lots of people talking about how you just have to keep trying and eventually find some esoteric combination of drugs that actually do something. I think these people are usually American. I'm sure it is possible to do this with the NHS, but I don't have high hopes.

Don't get me wrong, I am glad that my healthcare isn't a total commercial enterprise and that my costs are low. That's great. But the way some people talk about it does make it sound like the way to achieve this is with services that are far more dynamic than the NHS is able to provide. Like, everything takes so long and my GP can prescribe some antidepressants, but I need to go to a specialist team for others, and to an ADHD clinic for ADHD meds. None of these services seem able to talk to each other. So when I see people say "well my psychiatrist just switched things up so now I'm taking bupropion and atomoxetine with a top up of ritalin" (JUST A MADE UP EXAMPLE, IM NOT SAYING THATS A VIABLE COMBO I HAVE NO IDEA) I'm like.. how long would it take under the NHS for anyone to ever suggest such a thing, let alone allow it to actually be prescribed. I feel like that sort of outcome is probably much more feasible when your doctor is in the "well they're paying so let's just fuck around and throw things together, see what happens" mindset

Am I being too pessimistic? Does anyone here have a good experience of having complicated needs for meds that required a lot of trial and error/tweaking?

How do we think Martin got the worms

So like after Martin was trapped by Jane Prentiss he rushes to the archives to give his statement and he also has a jar containing some of the worms as evidence, right?

Honestly given how fast those little guys are, and how dangerous, and they can jump(!!) I'm impressed he managed it. The power of needing to prove himself to Jon must have been pretty motivating I guess 🙃

How much information is everyone working with

Obviously the main core of information within Magnus is what's recorded on the tapes, with statements and incidental bits.

There are some hints early on that people do access and listen to the tapes, although the reason is fairly nebulous. Martin mentions that he's heard Jon on the tapes ripping statements to shreds (which also presumably means he's heard Jon ripping him to shreds too, whoops). And there's the little detail of Tim telling Jon about errors on the tapes being caught by "PhD students" that use the tapes as resources, but I don't know how seriously to take that as it more feels like a fun in universe lampshade hanging, acknowledging real world errors that fans happened to catch. It's a little hard to imagine that the demand for cassette tapes of spooky statements would be that high even in universe, plus later there is suggested to be decent privacy protections in place for statements too. But I digress.

Then jon obviously splits the tapes at one point into the main information and his own private investigation. Amongst other things this is where he reveals his own investigations into the tunnels, finding evidence for Sasha's previous identity, and revealing his first leitner encounter.

While later-series Jon still definitely isn't great at sharing, some of these points seem pretty critical and by S3 the archives team are somewhat working towards a main goal together.

Not to mention the fact that between S3 and S4 Jon is in a coma and the others are having to carry on without him. We don't know where he stowed his tapes as far as I know.

Then there's the fact that other members of the team start recording statements at a certain point. Does Jon ever get to hear those? It seems like he should. Tim certainly gives his statement about Danny to martin, for Jon to hear. So clearly some information was being passed around. And in S4 Martin does recordings for Peter, but also makes a point of passing them on to Jon too. It feels like "the point" of the archives is that Jon has to engage with every real statement in some way, anyways.

So, given all this: how much do we think the others actually know about each others recordings?

If I was basira, I would definitely want to go back and listen to as much as possible. And it feels entirely feasible that she or the others might have even been able to find Jon's secret statements while he was in a coma. Which would basically puts almost everything into the open, for anyone who cared to listen to them all. But I don't think we ever really get evidence of this either way.

I just wanna know who knows what, and I'm sure there's not a clear cut answer but I'm interested to know what other listeners had assumed to be the case.

Today's MCM comic con event :)

Went to the live q&a with Jonny Sims and Alex Newell (hosted by the delightful Helen Gould) and then the meet and greet at London mcm comic con today. It was a really fun event, glad I went. I didn't spot that many Magnus cosplayers out in the wild throughout most of the con so it was nice that this gathered them together! Saw some good Gerrys and janes etc. a nice Elias with a bloody pipe. A Sasha with a fire extinguisher. A decent number of sweater vests, hopefully everyone was holding up ok in the heat.

Can't recall every detail but there were some interesting insights particularly from Alex who was feeling, and I quote, "fighty" and had a lot to say about various NDAs having recently run out, so was excited to discuss the many close calls they'd had almost getting the green light on an actual Magnus TV show (animated and live action both at points, apparently), and he says he's still fighting the good fight and hoping to make something happen in that area.

Jonny was very chilled out and appreciative of the fans. Brief discussion of the point around S2 when he decided to finally try to find out what an archivist actually does, and had to conclude that it was a bit too late to worry about that. Alex commented that one of the more unexpected things is the number of people who have been inspired to pursue archival careers due to the podcast.

When asked who they would fancast as their respective characters, Alex OBVIOUSLY said mads mikkelsen as Martin, because he is a troublemaker and it would upset people, so Jonny said Hugh dancy for Jon to complete the Hannibal theme.

they did a little improv horror section where they spun a wheel with themes and came up with horror premises for them which was fun and weird and involved Jonny conceptualising the con itself as a horror setting, and Alex getting fairly intense about crabs.

They had time for two audience questions, one was (I'm very roughly paraphrasing for simplicity) "why is horror important/appealing" and the other was roughly "you have a lot of statements set in walthamstow, discuss" which are hilariously different questions in tone and scope, and they answered both with equal enthusiasm and commitment which I appreciated. I have learnt much about walthamstow today.

The meet and greet was nice, people in the queue were lovely and it moved slowly but that's because people were getting proper opportunities to chat with Helen, Alex and Jonny and buy some merch.

All in all it was a nice time :D wishing everyone who was there a comfortable and restful evening and a nice cool drink or five (panel/rq team included). I feel like a husk.

Edit: I seem to be getting some downvotes for this. I mean this sincerely and unpettily, is there some etiquette I am breaking here? Because if so, I am unfamiliar with it and would like to know.

If you're at mcm comic con

Edit to add update: yep, the schedule by the live stage is wrong. Spore are on at 1 it seems, not magnus. Consequence of this is that there's now a small congregation of Magnus fans hanging around the area lol

There's a live event with Jonny, Alex and Helen Gould at mcm comic con in London today. The online sources, rusty quill social media, and mcm app all say the event is on the live stage at 3pm, which makes sense as the meet and greet is scheduled for shortly after.

The schedule by the live stage says the event will be at 1pm.

I asked some staff and they didn't know what to say other than maybe keep an eye out at both times just in case.

So I just wanted to put it out there in case anyone else is here and confused - I suspect the event is actually still at 3 and the sign is wrong, but be aware!!

Edited for clarity

My app updated - menstruation history gone?

i had been using the previous app as the primary way for tracking my period for a few years. now, while the updated app seemingly has my older data for things like sleep and steps synced and available to view, my period data hasn't seemed to move over. To clarify, I can SEE the option where period tracking would be. There's just no previous history recorded in it.

I'm not panicking and assuming it's all gone. When I go to the cycle health tab it has the option to "set up" - and I have to accept. Slightly weird and confusing and maybe if I click on it it will THEN sync up all my old data. But I still wanted to check, as it is framed like I'm starting fresh and I'm slightly nervous that proceeding might actually end up wiping things.

▲ 51 r/ADHD

My understanding is: Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome (CDS), previously known as sluggish cognitive tempo, is not an officially recognised as a diagnosable disorder, but it is possible that it might become one and has a fair amount of research behind it. It is particularly backed by Dr Russell Barkley who is a leading ADHD expert.

I came across the term when he recently started releasing shorts of his older YouTube presentations on the topic. I ended up watching all of his videos on the subject.

Since Dr Barkley has addressed it so thoroughly I am surprised how rarely I see it come up, even if just as a point of discussion/curiosity in ADHD communities.

Although I suppose I do understand, since you can't officially get diagnosed with it that it's sort of .. speculative, if that's the right word? So maybe people don't wanna talk about it too much in case it muddies the water/because it's uncertain. But I'm still surprised since typically I feel like people do talk through different labels a lot even if they aren't official diagnostic criteria (like rejection sensitive dysphoria).

Does anyone feel like they would maybe be diagnosed with it if such a test became widely available?

If so, how do you cope with life? What are your experiences with medication?

Personally: I do also believe my inattentive ADHD (and autism) diagnoses are accurate, but I wouldn't be surprised i crossed some speculative threshold of having CDS. Dr Barkley's videos on CDS do explain some findings that indicate differences between ADHD-PI and CDS, one being iirc that CDS has less deficits to executive function. And I definitely have those still. But i also don't respond so well to meds, which also seems to be a slight trend with CDS in studies so far.
