About Java mods (PZ3D, Viewpoint and others) — a word of caution

Today in the comments about the 3D mods I read what one of The Indie Stone developers said about Java mods:

>"Java mods are not supported by TIS at all, as they give complete access to your system that malicious actors can exploit. Users should be very cautious about using Java mods, and only ever install something they know for a fact is safe. We have no means to protect users who use them."

I think it's worth explaining what that means for us.

Most Project Zomboid mods are Lua scripts, and the game keeps them inside its own limits. Java mods (the ones that need ZombieBuddy — PZ3D, Viewpoint, ZBBetterFPS and others) are different: they are regular program code that runs with the same rights as the game itself. Nobody checks what that code does — not TIS, not Steam Workshop, not us.

On PC that means access to all of your files. On Android the system keeps every app in its own sandbox, so a mod can't touch other apps or system files. But inside Zomdroid a Java mod can do everything the launcher can — read your saves and the launcher's files, use the internet, and, if you allowed Zomdroid "All files access" (we ask for it when you download the game from Steam or GOG) or microphone access (voice chat), use those too.

So please:

  • only install Java mods from authors and pages you trust, with plenty of players and comments;
  • be careful with brand-new uploads from unknown accounts, and with copies of popular mods re-uploaded by someone else;
  • if you don't need a Java mod, don't keep it enabled.
  • if you no longer need "All files access" after downloading the game, you can turn it off for Zomdroid in Android settings.

Lua mods aren't affected by any of this.

CPU Load News

Yesterday, thanks to a report from one of the players, we tracked down a bug where the game on build 42 loads the CPU almost up to 100% — without any justified reason. After digging into it, we found out that this is actually a bug in the game itself on build 42, and there are already plenty of open tickets about it at TIS. Still, we’ll try to release a patch that intercepts and ‘puts to sleep’ the process responsible for the CPU load.

Stay tuned for updates!

One year of Zomdroid

A year ago, in September 2025, I found this project and decided to tweak it a little — just enough to get my gamepad working properly. That's how it started.

Since then we've cleared the entire roadmap. The last item on it — hosting a server directly on your phone — landed in 1.5.0. (Yes, I remember the promise about a mod patch for hosted servers. Still owed.)

There's still work ahead, but at this point it's mostly QoL. Build 42, the heaviest one, now runs on low-end devices. And with some ARM libs pulled over from macOS builds, we managed to remove the last bit of emulation Build 42 still needed — Box64 has nothing left to do there. The game runs fully native.

I'm not walking away from this project. But I'll have more time and attention for my other ones going forward.

If you're curious what I'm working on next, I post about it on my Telegram: t.me/udarmolota

Thanks for a year of bug reports, patience and community support.

PowerVR v1.4.9 patch

Some mid‑range smartphones with PowerVR GPUs have trouble loading the game on Build 41 GL4ES. A patch has been released for them in version 1.4.9.

Manage storage feature on 1.4.9

For those who lost the Manage Storage feature in 1.4.9 — it moved under the three dots, just a bit to the left.

Friendly reminder

  • The latest versions of Zomdroid support batch mod import — just pack all mod folders into one ZIP archive and upload it once.
  • To view FPS, create an on‑screen control button (MNK type) bound to KEY_K.
  • The latest launcher versions support the newest stable PZ build — 42.20.x.
  • The newest launcher version (currently 1.4.8v3) supports most animation mods. There are a few exceptions with certain vehicle types that cause shader errors and make the UI disappear, but the game won’t crash — just move away from that area and the UI will return.
  • In the newest launcher version (currently 1.4.8v3), Build 42 has quick‑save (F10) feature. It lets you create a save you can roll back to if you get bitten or if the game suddenly crashes.
  • If you downloaded the Linux version of 42.20 and the launcher shows “your files are not supported on Linux,” you’re probably using an older launcher version that doesn’t support 42.20 yet. The error message is misleading.
  • To play multiplayer on Build 41, you need two libraries from 42.12: libRakNet64.so and libZNetNoSteam64.so. It’s very important to take them from the "android" folder — there is another set for Linux, and those will not work. For MP in Build 42 you don’t need anything — everything is included.
  • If you have a bug and didn’t find an answer in this subreddit, press “Report a bug” in the launcher menu, choose your email provider (like Gmail), add a description of the issue (this is important), and press Send. You will receive a reply.

⚠️ About modified ZomDroid builds

Today there have been several posts and questions about a modified version of ZomDroid that appears to include or provide access to Project Zomboid game files.

Just to make our policy clear: ZomDroid does not distribute Project Zomboid, and we do not support piracy or redistribution of game files. The official ZomDroid requires users to provide their own legally obtained copy of the game.

Posts or comments sharing, promoting, or asking for support with modified builds that distribute game files will be removed.

EDIT: These modifications put MY project at risk, because my fork of ZomDroid is the most visible and openly developed one. The game developers could come after ZomDroid over piracy concerns — and then everyone loses it. I seriously doubt the people modifying my work will keep maintaining and developing ZomDroid if the original project gets shut down.

Cats is out (Companion Dogs Addon)

Hey folks, companion dogs dev here.

My first post on reddit xD

Just dropping by to let you know cats are now out for CD!

It works in MP, you can add it to existing saves (the spawn is independent from the dogs), and it has all the CD features. But even though it uses CD as a base, some mechanics like attacking zombies, hunting deer, taking care of livestock, etc... have been disabled for the cats :D

It's an add-on, so you need the base Companion Dogs mod (0.7.0 or newer) subscribed and enabled too.

All the details are on the WIKI: WIKI
Workshop: CD: Cats

A little bit of self-promotion 😅

ZomDroid has acquired two younger brothers, so I finally made a shared Telegram channel for all my Android launcher projects:

r/ZomDroid - Project Zomboid

r/RimDroid - RimWorld

r/PriDroid - Prison Architect, born literally yesterday

I'll post short release announcements, development updates, things I'm currently experimenting with, and probably whatever I decide to build next.

Reddit doesn't seem to like Telegram links, so I can't post a direct one here 😅

The channel is called udarmolota - just search for that on Telegram and you should find it.

Quick Save exists. Players: ‘Oh?’

In the latest release, v1.4.8, the two main features were support for animation mods and Quick Save (F10) for b42, which lets you roll back to a save after a sudden crash - or even after getting bitten.

However, in the feedback survey about Quick Save, most people said it was the first time they’d heard of this feature.

Interesting 😁

RimDroid - an Android launcher for RimWorld (1.5 & 1.6)

Hey all - I've been building r/rimdroid, a launcher that runs actual RimWorld (Linux build) on Android mobile phones/tablets through box64 emulation. Not a port - box64 translator.

What it does:

  • Runs RimWorld 1.5 and 1.6, including latest DLC
  • Custom lightweight X11 server + Zink/Turnip (Vulkan) rendering
  • Per-instance settings: renderer, Vulkan driver picker (system driver for Mali GPUs)
  • Render scale (game resolution)
  • Physical mouse/keyboard/gamepad support, plus on-screen touch controls with a layout editor
  • Mods work
  • GOG installer (.sh) support/Steam downloader built in (zip archives)

Minimum requirements:

  • Android 11+
  • 6 GB RAM

It's beta, one-person hobby project. Performance scales mainly with how powerful your phone is (either GPU vendor) - the stronger the chip, the better it runs. Weaker devices on both Adreno and Mali may need a driver swap or a compatibility toggle to get running well. Frame rate on the same device can also swing a fair bit depending on Android's own background app-optimization state, which is its own rabbit hole I'm still chasing.

Looking for testers, especially on non-Adreno GPUs, and any feedback/bug reports. Releases: GitHub

RimDroid WIP — Playable RimWorld on Android via box64

Just dropped the first public WIP build of RimDroid — the younger brother of Zomdroid.

Tested on:

  • Samsung S25 Ultra
  • RimWorld Stable 1.5 Linux build

Important hardware note:
Currently RimDroid relies heavily on Vulkan translation layers, so at the moment Snapdragon devices are the primary target.
Other GPUs/chipsets may or may not work yet.

RimDroid is an Android launcher for running the Linux version of RimWorld on Android using box64 translation.
This is not an emulator — it’s a translation layer approach, which is generally lighter and more efficient for the device than full emulation.

Current state:

  • the game launches and runs
  • rendering works
  • controls already work
  • zoom works
  • map interaction works
  • the game is already playable on a phone

It is still an early WIP though:

  • controls need polishing
  • performance tuning is still ongoing
  • stability/device compatibility still need work
  • mod compatibility is not fully tested yet
  • no sound

Important:

  • RimDroid is only a launcher / compatibility layer
  • no game files are included
  • requires your own legally obtained copy of RimWorld
