This Japanese Indie Film Inspired Devil May Cry 3

So I was recently looking into the creative origins of Devil May Cry 3 and noticed some insane similarities to Ryuhei Kitamura’s cult-classic indie action film, Versus (2000) or Ultimate Versus depending on the version.

If you haven't seen it, Versus is a low-budget "Yakuza vs. Zombies vs. Samurai" movie shot entirely in a forest it's like Matrix meets Evil Dead meets Highlander (Yes is that crazy). While the movie never goes really deep on the plot, since it’s purpose here is just to be a set piece for action scenes, the general story is very similar to that of DMC3.

The plot centers on two immortal "brothers" locked in a blood feud. The whole movie is set on an ancient place (The Forest of Ressurection) that serves as a gateway to the Underworld [Devil May Cry 3 is set soley on the Temen-ni-gru who is also a gateway to the undeworld]

The villain ("The Man") seeks absolute power by unlocking the portal to it. [Just like Vergil]

The villain needs the blood of a specific girl to unlock the gateway to underworld [This perfectly mirrors Lady (Mary), whose blood is required to break Sparda’s seal on the Temen-ni-gru tower]

The protagonist (Prisoner KSC2-303) starts off entirely selfish with no real motivation [Exactly like Dante] except escaping custody. But as the story progresses he ends fully embracing his role and takes responsability to stop his brother's plans.

He also don't have a nice relation with The Girl at the beginning but both end up liking each other as the story progresses [A little bit more than Dante and Lady tbf]

In the fist fight against The Man our protagonist loses and basically dies but he comes back to life, awakening his true, latent power in the process. And defeats The Man in the end. (The movie also has an unhinged Jester like character btw)

As you see on the image Prisoner KSC2-303 is similar to Dante, long leather coat, long hair etc... but he even has the same swagger, mannerisms and devil may care atitude. Like Dante he is constantly flipping his long leather trench coat before and during a fight and smiling or mocking his enemies in a fight.

I would even say that they have similar weapons.

Sword: Check

Dual Handguns: Check(even the way he holds is similar btw)

Sawed-Off Shotgun: Check

Anti-Material Rifle: Check (This one is interesting, Dante is a fast, hyper-mobile fighter, so a heavy, slow bolt-action rifle like Spiral always felt a bit random, until you realize that may be a direct nod to Versus)

Also i know that 3 of those weapons also appeared since DMC 1 but Versus predates even the first game, and i also think it may had an influence on DMC 1 albeit to a much less degree, i would say it may have influeced the overall aesthetics, combat, and soundtrack (seriously hear this and tell me if it's not a theme ripped straight from DMC 1)

DMC 3 also has alot action scenes that are similar to that of Versus (Stylishing put a coat on, putting a gun the mouth etc, the protagonist doing something he thought would be cool only for him to act like in goofy way. The protagonist and the antagonist changing swords in the middle of a fight etc...) but i think this is probably due to the fact that Yuji Shimamura (the Action Director for Versus) was hired by Capcom to be the Cutscene Director for DMC3. Alongside him, Hiroyuki Yoshida (a core stuntman from Versus) became the Action Coordinator for DMC3. I think When Capcom wanted to revamp Dante's identity for the prequel, they brought in the exact guys who invented the hyper-stylized, cocky kinetic action of Versus which was the epitome of cool at the time. (Fun Fact Hideo Kojima plays a Zombie in the film too, but i never spotted him)

That's what i wanted to share with you people, there's probably even more stuff but i think this is enough to get the point across. Have you watched Versus? Do you also saw the Similarities with DMC? let me know what you think.

How This Encounter Would Go?

For those who don't know that's Tetsuo Shima from another dystopic, highly influential 80s manga; Akira. But most people are more familiar with the animated film.

A detail about the "Ali vs Igari" situation

Everybody knows that Yujiro uses the "technique" that Antonio Inoki used on Muhammad Ali, on Ali Jr. But did you guys know that what Ali Jr did it to Yujiro was the same thing Bruce Lee did to Hayward Nishioka? Man Itagaki really is a super fighing geek.

How Far Does Alita Get Into The Verse?

From Battle Angel Alita.

The distance was that of 1 Km (1093 yards) btw. Ryo (the one who made the shots) was also using a M1 Carbine, which has an effective firing range of approximately 300 yards (270 meters).
