Tactical sim - breaking the limits of rpgmaker

After a late night gaming session of some old favorites with friends, we're once again revisiting developing a tactical RPG of sorts. It would be a mixture of different gameplay systems for something that would feel unique with probably a small audience.

The games inspiring the project are Atlus's Ogre Battle, Koei's Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and the Langrisser/Warsong series.

We discussed our ideal game. We have a bit of of resources including two team members that are decent at coding, an artist, a scenario writer, etc. Now, this discussion became very much about taking our money and opening a studio to take a project toward kickstarter but one of the guys insists that RPGmaker has the tools we need. We aren't convinced. So what do you all think?

The game would have two phases. The first phase would be ROTK-esque city/kingdom management with territories, populations, taxes, resources, and officer/character management. Diplomacy, moving troops, building defenses, and assigning officers to various tasks.

The second phase would be the actual battles. Grids are obviously possible in RPGmaker but the preferred style works more akin to Ogre Battle march of the black queen or ogre battle 64. Each "region" would have a battle map with terrain, night, day, and weather. Units would be selected and move in real time across the map with enemy units moving in similar real time. Take stronghold/cities to conquer the region.

Combat would be when two units clash hit rather than Ogre Battle the combat would be similar to Langrisser/Warsong in which units clash in a mini cut scene. Officers level up and get new classes and abilities.

There are other mechanics that a brief look at rpgmaker says sure, it could happen. Different fantasy races, equipment, classes. All of that has a variety of tools for sure but the kingdom management and live movement of the units seem possibly beyond rpgmaker's abilities.

So what do you all think? Do plugins already exist that can do these things? Or are we talking about having to build plugins?

Is it all just beyond RPGmaker and we need to look at other engines?

Best multiplayer ROTK experience?

All,

Having played the older Koei games religiously, I'm trying to get back into it. But sifting through poorly written articles and bad links to find what's the best available is challenging.

I'm looking to do couch co-op. Two players. I have a ps5, switch, and steam. Are there any good ROTKs I should look into? I'm limited to English releases.

I was shocked and disappointed that the viii remake took away couch co-op.

Thanks!

GRRM discusses writing Fire and Blood (no spoilers)

In several different discussions of late, folks have discussed when and how FnB was written. Part of this spins out of what Condal and Hess pushed early on: theirs was a version (if not the TRUE) version of events. I've argued that whether intentional or not, the writing style of FnB leaves it open to a dialog with the series that claims "accuracy."

At any rate, I've been accused of not understanding the timeline of FnB's development, relation to the show and more.

Here it is in Martin's own words:

While he had much of the material, he wrote this BECAUSE of the show being developed.

Software or paths to check my work

Long story short, lost a massive map I had built and now I have to recreate it. I'm looking at doing some stronger software this time like Wonderdraft rather than painstakingly in Gimp with all my own assets. Rather than being bummed that I lost several years of works (I have much older backups but... it's a long story. Anyway) I'm looking at this as an opportunity to do it better than the direction I was going on.

I'm concerned about how it maps to a globe, I'm concerned about tectonic plates. As I engage these questions, any programs or software you'd recommend? Anything to read or resources to double check how plates would map onto this?

DMDE data recovery if it can't find a partition

Hey all, using DMDE for the first time. I have an m.2 hard drive that died rather suddenly. I got an adapter port, DMDE, did a lot of reading and video tutorials but checking here in case there's something I'm missing. I believe the paritition and data in question are completely unrecoverable and lost permanently.

I believe it was a 1 tb drive, maybe it was smaller but certainly significant in size. DMDE only detects it as 1.07 gb, so I can tell it can't find everything. Running the full scan shows no files found.

As you can all tell, this isn't my strong suit. But I'm thinking two things here:

  1. the partition the laptop ran on is... unfindable. Which seems to be corrupted beyond recovery.

  2. If I'm lucky, this is really just a user error and I'm missing some step to make that partition "appear" so we can look at it, even identify that it's corrupted.

It's odd to me that nothing can be seen and that the m.2 is read as being so tiny compared to what it once was (but the corruption would do that, I guess).

So. Any hope? Any ideas for next steps?

(And most everything is fine, there's literally two documents I'm wishing to recover).
