Alvey Rod Advice

Hello all, needing a bit of advice with this Alvey reel I found this in an op shop. $20, I couldn’t resist!

I know my way around baitcasters and spin reels, but this is my first Alvey and wanted to make a little project of it.

I’ll strip it down and give it a good clean and buff then I’d like to set it up as a “Classic Australiana” beach casting setup for whiting and the like.

Do Alvey’s take a particular type of rod? Any recommendations? Would it be criminal to spool one with braid or is mono still the go to for these?

The CCI Lottery

I’m far too cheap to properly get into precision rimfire with large volumes of Lapua or Eley but I do enjoy playing the CCI lottery.

Two sets of groups showing how varied they can be between batches. E07GA06 in blue and A31GA07 in green.

I’ve come to expect an “average” batch of CCI SV to put most in the same hole with 3 fliers or so. These two seem to be on opposite ends of the CCI spectrum with one looking like birdshot and the other looking pretty good with only one or two fliers.

Beretta 92X 1000 rounds in

After a long wait and considerable deliberation, I picked up my first handgun on this license and I chose the Beretta 92X.

As a returning shooter, I’d had my time with other pistols. Various 1911s, P226, a few revolvers. I ended up choosing the Beretta because I never got the chance to get intimate with the platform. I handled one before but I didn’t vibe with the grip and the trigger reset was, like my P226, a bit long for my liking. Though it was a beautiful handgun, I never shot the P226 as well as I did my 1911s. They sold a short trigger reset kit for the P226 but I never got around to installing one and before long, I had sold it and moved to Oz.

Enter the Beretta 92X. A modernised classic with the new, slimmer, “Vertec” grip and a shorter trigger reset. I was intrigued.

The pistol feels good in hand and that trigger is crisp. Boy, is she accurate. Even with cheap Blazer ammo she stacks the rounds.

With my rifles, I can shoot under 1/2MOA but handguns provide an entirely different experience. The challenge is thoroughly enjoyable.

My benchmark is the #12 Standard Centrefire comp at my SSAA range. One-handed, bullseye style. 10 shots at 10M and 10 shots at 15M. Currently trying to beat my best score of 186/200. I shot a 171 today and I will gleefully try again next week.

Ammo Inc. 124gr JHP

I got a deal on some of this stuff and it was cheaper than Blazer. After I bought it, I looked online and was shocked at the reviews and wondered if I just wasted my cash.

Tested it out and was pretty pleased with the performance! Velocities out of a full size Beretta, group at 10yds but I’m pretty average at pistols.

Two and a Half Months of Venison

After two years in pursuit, I got my first buck during the rut. Four days of being hopeful and anxious, those two emotions coexisting and swirling all throughout.

I caught up with him on the last day of my 4 day state forest hunt. Custom hand loaded 77gr. TMK to the high shoulder dropped him on the spot.

Every time I cook some up and eat it, it’s an incredible reminder of that journey. Somehow it really adds a dimension to the flavour of what is already incredible free range, organic, wild, delicious meat. I’m so strangely protective of it and have felt kind of angry when I share it and the person I’ve shared it with doesn’t seem to see it with the same sort of reverence that I do. I don’t know, I just really love this animal.

How far do you push it?

I started developing a 77gr. TMK cartridge for use in my 16” 5.56NATO chambered Ruger Scout.

Now well above published load data getting ~2,750FPS out of the 16” barrel surpassing the goal of matching the fastest factory 77gr I had (S&B) going ~2,670FPS.

I am getting primer cratering at these velocities, but no other pressure signs. No sticky lift, no popped primers, nothing. They extract nicely and are grouping phenomenally.

I don’t really have to push it, but there is the itch to keep going. Am I being silly?
