Scheduling cat euthanasia
Our 15 year old cat I believe may be at the end but I’m having a hard time determining if it’s time to schedule the appointment.
He had surgery 2.5 years ago to remove an osteosarcoma from his foot. The margins showed they did not get all of it, and the vet told us it would return eventually and estimated he had 1-2 years left. He’s been fine until about 6 months ago when the tumor came back. He’s been losing weight and has dropped from 19 pounds to 12 pounds in this time. His belly seems distended towards the sides and is hard to the touch. He goes outside once a day for about an hour (supervised, doesn’t leave the fenced yard) because he absolutely loves it. As of last night he has some kind of infection because he has green crusty snot, a little eye crust and an obvious ear infection. I’m assuming it’s from pollen or something outdoor related. He sleeps a lot but eats fine, drinks, and begs to go outside and purrs when we pet him. He seems happy but I know it’s hard to tell when cats are in pain.
I plan on cleaning his ears and snotty face tonight, and I have ear drops from my other cat that I’m going to put in his ears. I’m hoping it clears up in a few days. But I’m worried that it either won’t clear up, or it’ll just be fixing an acute issue when he’s obviously declining chronically. I’d hate to call it quits and put him down now when he still seems happy, but he really seems like he’s declining fast. I hate making these decisions.
