Sanity Check - Beginner

Hey everyone, never woven anything before but been really loving playing with plaidmaker and wanted to try and turn some of my designs into actual fabric. I want to make a piece no larger than a square foot and I wanted it to be relatively fine. I was thinking about using 8/2 cotton at about ~12-15 epi. I have a 16” rigid heddle loom that I would be using. Just wanted to check if this project is insane/not fit for a beginner. Any advice is appreciated as well!

DIY Travelers Notebook

Hey everyone been into journaling for a bit and wanted a leather cover, so instead of buying a nice one from paper republic for $85 like a normal person I spent $150 to make my own with much lower quality. Very very excited about how it turned out even though I’ve never made anything with leather before.

First Ever Project - B7 Traveler’s Journal Cover

Been really into journaling and really liked the form factor of paper republic journals but was not about to pay 85 bucks for one, so naturally I spent 150 on tools to make one myself. First ever leather crafting project so lmk how I did/where I can improve. I used natural Badalassi Carlo Pueblo, beveled and burnished the edges, and added my own eyelets. The corners are very uneven and the eyelets are not level but overall I’m very proud of it for my first time and super excited to use it.

Beginner Cricket for Adults

Hey everyone, moved here recently and have become really interested in learning to play cricket. I’m familiar with the rules and played baseball my entire life and have been interested in playing some real games. Are there any casual groups in San Francisco that wouldn’t mind a beginner jumping in?

TFH 3005 - First Ever Pair

Hey everyone,

Long time lurker, first time poster just bought my first pair of raw selvedge jeans. Wanted something I could wear with cowboy boots and came out with the 3005s from The Flat Head. They fit better than any pair of jeans I’ve ever owned (shoutout Ryan and the Self Edge ATX folks) and I’m super excited to get some wears on my first pair. Any advice welcome :)

Zoom H5 vs. H1e - Variety of Recordings

Hello, I am entirely new to the world of field recording, but I’m planning on recording quieter nature sounds along with louder things like trains, cars, and public spaces. I’ve also been interested in experimenting with contact microphones in the future and possibly DIY building mics (I recently went down a rabbit hole reading about PUI 5024 builds).

I recently ordered a used Zoom H5 for around $95, which seemed like a really good deal, but I’m also considering a Zoom H1essential because of the 32-bit float recording. I do like the fact that the H5 has XLR inputs and seems more expandable for future projects, but I’m wondering how much better modern recorders actually are in terms of self-noise and preamp quality for quieter ambience recordings.

For someone completely new to this:

  • Would you keep the H5 at that price, or go with something newer like the H1essential?
  • Is 32-bit float genuinely that useful for beginner field recording or is it overblown?
  • How limiting/noisy are the H5 preamps in practice for quiet nature ambience?
  • Would an H5 still be a good platform to grow into DIY mics/contact mics/generally nicer setups later?

I’m trying to avoid buying twice if possible, but I also don’t want to obsess over gear instead of actually recording. Any advice would be appreciated.

Groovy Guy Alterations

Hey y’all, been looking for a pair of raw selvedge denim I can wear with my cowboy boots and the groovy guys seem to be the best “bootcut” option I can find. Problem is I’m not quite that groovy, and don’t want as much flare in the bottom. Would tailoring them to take off ~.5 inch at the leg opening work with this cut?

Belt Buckle Advice

Hello all, I was recently inspired by this incredible buckle by Norbert Peshlakai and wanted to try and replicate this style. Currently thinking of buying a slightly thicker gauge sheet to serve as the body and then soldering thinner decorations on top of it. I have only made smaller pieces before (rings, ear cuffs, etc) and I am a bit worried about heating the piece correctly especially as I am planning on soldering some larger pieces on to the body. Any tips/cautions about this approach? Advice for best method to build/insights into how he made this?
