Best fluval stratum alternative suggestions?

I posted to r/plantedtanks abt this and ppl recommended I come here and look into the walstad method.

I’ve seen so many mixed answers online. Ppl say garden pro topsoil is good, some ppl say it’s not good, same with scott’s topsoil and miracle gro potting mix 😭

I’m just trying to look for the best alternative bc I don’t want to spend $30 on fluval stratum. Any suggestions?

Best reptile recommendation for someone who’s never owned one before?

Hi all:)

I’ve never owned a reptile before but am interested in getting one sometime (Probably not anytime soon, but hopefully in the next 3-4 months. I want to plan and research ahead!).

Anyway, I was looking into corn snakes, but realized that I’d need a massive tank for them, and I was also looking into chameleons, but they’re are definitely not beginner, so I was thinking maybe bearded dragon or leopard gecko?

I’m open for more suggestions and or care guides!!

Easy to care for tall plant recommendations?

Hi all:)

As the title says, I’m looking for easy to care for tall plants aren’t heavy root feeders.

I have a gravel bottom tank and can’t put root tabs in the gravel or plant any plants bc the gravel is too rough, so I just have to anchor all my plants.

I’m thinking of jungle val but idk if they do better planted or anchored.

Any suggestions?

Are all these red root floaters I bought dead?

The first pic is how much looked alive, and the second one is how many dead ones I picked out.

The packaging was not proper (I assume). They came in a plain plastic bag, no wet paper towels wrapped around them or anything. I’m wondering if this was worth $10 and if any of this is salvageable?

I was letting him follow my finger and he started flaring when I showed him my nail lol. I couldn’t get a photo of him flaring though :(

Hi all:)

I did an “instant” cycle on my new 5.5 gallon tank 5 days ago, because I’m working on moving my betta from its 20 gal (for multiple reasons), but I didn’t move him in straight away ofc.

Anyway, I’ve been testing the parameters everyday (except for one day bc I forgot), and they’ve all been good… except for my ammonia levels. It suddenly went from 0.00ppm to 0.25, so I did a small water change and then tested them again today.

The parameters are still either 0.05ppm or 0.25, even after detoxifying with prime and adding a little stability yesterday..? Is this a false reading? I’ve been using the API freshwater kit, which I heard is the most accurate, but looked some stuff up and found out that it can be false sometimes, just need someone to confirm. Thx!
