Peace lily and woofer

Peace lily and woofer

I’m having really bad luck with peace lillies in my house lately... I just bought a lily and it lives in a pot on top of my subwoofer and every day it’s got more yellow leaves and now it went from a lovely vibrant plant to a poor dying shitty lookin thing in the matter of 2 weeks. Part of me thinks it is the sun in this spot but my wife is convinced that the woofer is killing it. any thoughts? did I fuck up transferring the plant to a new pot before letting it settle into the spot? are the vibrations from my woofer killing it? or is it something else entirely?

Parking for pop-up trailer

Anybody got a little property with some room to house a pop-up trailer for me? I live in Goldenwest and the cops have tagged it as "abandoned" even though its not and are threatening to tow it if I don't move it. Thanks.

EDIT: I know I can just move it every few days or whatever, but its a pain and I don't have room for it at the house other than on the street.

[Vinyl inquiry] Violet EP Test Pressing

Once a year or so I reach out to the community seeing if anyone has one of the test pressings of the Violet EP they'd be willing to sell. I crowdfunded the original pressing of the Color Spectrum collection and one of my cats knocked some of my vinyl around and it chipped my copy of the Violet EP, which is now unplayable and my favorite of the whole collection.

Thanks.

It's 9PM...

... the kids are asleep. My wife is asleep. The dog is walked, fed and asleep. I worked a full day. The chores are done (laundry is going but I'll just need to hang it) and the house is clean. What would you do?

I will probably play Lord of the Rings: War in the North which I just downloaded today, or I will finish reading Return of the King because I'm really close to finishing it. Not too often I get nights like this where I've got all the choices in the world are laid out before me.

Questions for the long time modders

I've got two iPods that I'm fairly certain need new logic boards. Can I get some input from you guys?

Unit A - Gen 6, flash modded with new battery and 128gb storage - Won't stay on even with a full charge. Will run and then acts as if the battery is dead and won't turn back on unless I plug it in and then will need to "recharge" but the battery should be full.

Unit B - Gen 6, flash modded with new battery and 128gb storage - runs for a while then drops out album artwork and audio unless I do a hard reset. Then will run and just do it again.

What am I dealing with here? Unit A is my beloved OG iPod I bought with my own money in HS. It sat unused for many a year until I had a professional replace the logic board and bring it back to life. Ended up learning how to mod on this unit and did the iflash HDD replacement myself. It ran perfectly for a long time and now it just doesn't. I've done a few resets on it and reloaded music and it just won't fix the problem. Unit B is one I got from somebody to bring back to life and so far it just hasn't worked out how I had hoped.

Will running Rockbox on either of these units fix the issue? Do I just need to cut my losses and get new logic boards? Unit A has obvious sentimental value and I'd love to get it back running.

Any feedback is appreciated!

Ojai Library Closure

This is a general FYI...

If you haven't heard, I'm here to let you know that the Ojai Library will be closed for about 6-8 months starting in August. They will be doing general updates including but not limited to expansion of sitting/work areas, updating the kids activity area and moving it to the Ojai Ave side of the building, updating the fireplaces and turning that area into the "adult" area, upgrading some computers and generally making the library more friendly for patrons to sit and hang out. They are very excited about it!

I spoke with one of the librarians today asking about book returns and if the depositories will be open during construction if we have anything currently checked out, she said no but all books currently checked out can be returned to the Meiners Oaks Library (400 S Lomita Ave) or the Oak View Library (555 Mahoney Ave) during the closure. I was curious too about the plan for the books during the closure and she explained that once the closure goes into effect they will be boxing everything up and putting it into storage until the library opens again. I remarked that that's pretty sad and she said yeah especially considering that the Ojai location is sometimes the only one of the 3 local libraries that has certain books. So I then asked if we should just check out a big stack of books before they close and she actually said yes. She said that the more books we check out, the less books they have to box up AND those books will be available to the public during the closure because we will return them to MO or OV Libraries and essentially keep the books in circulation during the closure.

I know that the standard library cards with no restrictions can typically check out 50 (yes FIFTY) books at one time so my daughter and I each grabbed a small stack today and will probably return next week to grab another short stack. And even if either of us read em before the end of the month, we're going to hold on to them and return them to MO or OV so other readers can enjoy them over the course of the next 6-8 months while our location is closed.

TLDR; Ojai Library is closing starting 8/1. Go check out a big stack of books so they have less to pack and when you're done, return them to the Meiners Oaks or Oak View Library so they don't just bake in storage for the next few seasons while our library is closed!

Thank you for coming to my TED talk, go read a book!

Reunited and it feels so good…

A few years ago my turntable went out on me. I got a cheap replacement to fill the void with the intention of repairing it. I attempted a few things but failed at fixing it. it sat on the shelf. months turned to years. today I picked my SL-1900 up from repair and I am just tickled with how much I am brought back to my love of listening to music. what a machine. later dudes.

Today was a fine day.

I’ve been really going through it lately. seems like not a lot is going my way despite my best efforts and I really feel outta sorts because of it. I’m finding escape and some stability in reading and right now I’m going through the Lord of the Rings trilogy for the first time despite a lifetime of fandom. I read the hobbit as a kid and watched all the movies when they were coming out but had never cracked the pages of the trilogy until now and am very happy that I am doing so. Also got my turntable back from repair today.

Around December 2024 my wife started working full time in a new career and since then a lot of the odds and ends, day to day routine parent stuff has fallen on to me because she is gone or in office a lot. My kids are wonderful AND they’re a lot of work and one of our day to day pain points is meals (I’m sure many can relate) and recently I noticed my daughter (9) really pulling away from the family at meal time, just sort of shutting down and not really wanting to be around any longer than she had to be. Our son is 4 and… well he’s 4. He takes tiny bites, dinner takes at least a fuckin hour, stops eating and you say “okay go ahead and let’s move on to the next thing” and then he cries because “he’s hungry” and so you cave and so okay eat and then he still just sits there. We’re tired of feeding him so we all stopped and it’s just chaos. So I understand why my poor girl just wouldn’t want any part of it. So we talked it out, the three of us without mom, and figured out some changes so that dinner can feel better and be a happier time in our day, not just for nourishing our bodies but smiling and laughing together and talking about our days and our feelings and all that lovey dovey shit. Mom is obviously in support, but typically doesn’t get back from the office until later when dinner is already done (It’s no big deal, it’s just where we’re at with our careers and we’ll get through it). Since the conversation, things have been pretty good and our boy even finished his dinner first last night and got to celebrate “winning” dinner. We do our “roses & thorns” of the day, we make jokes and mix up the meals as much as possible. Life is work, but life is good.

Also, breakfast for dinner is always a hit. And chicken and waffles is a perfectly reasonable meal to have for dinner and that is a hill I will die on.

Also also, go on Amazon and buy a bulk box of fortune cookies for like $15 and have fortune cookies any time you make any cuisine that is remotely Asian. It’s a very good incentive for clean plates. I offer up fortune cookies when we do gyoza, orange chicken, ramen, udon Or even sushi. Always a fan favorite.

Dads, What are your dinner “hacks” or routines that just work?

EDIT: Since a few of you are asking for more meat on this bone... Here's the nitty gritty of the changes (mostly just copied from the comments).

First and foremost the kids have jobs while I make dinner. Before anything, since they are typically chillin in the living room around that time, they both need to work together to clean up the space (mostly so I don't have to do it once they've gone down to sleep). Then, our boy fills the dog bowl so I can feed him (he gets meat and carrots mixed with his kibble). And our girl clears and sets the table. One or both of them will get beverages set up (usually just grabbing their water bottles to be honest). We changed up our seating arrangement too, because for the longest time everyone has had their respective "spot" at the table. Now the kids choose where they want to sit, and if they want the same spot they do a best-of-3 rock, paper, scissors match to decide the fate of their butts.

My girl's biggest request was just for us to make conversation at dinner so that's where the roses & thorns comes in, and she usually shares about her dreams and projects that she's working on. Our boy... well again he's 4 so its mostly just getting him to realize he can't simply talk over and that he'll get his turn. When he does he just tells us about what he did on the playground that day. My boy's biggest request was to have smaller portions which I obliged, so now instead of doing the "ok have 3 more bites" 1000 times, we just go in with a plate that is the absolute bare minimum that he can eat to be excused from the table or get desert after, which is typically a lolly or yogurt with fruit... Pampered little punks!

Its going well so far. We went from nightly misery to some pretty peaceful evenings lately and its trickled into making the end of the night easier and subsequently making for better sleep and then an easier morning. I need peace in my house. My job is so very frustrating all the time so having peace in the home is sooooooo important to me right now.
