Travel Safety - Personal Advice
There has always been posts asking if it's safe to visit and peoples concerns over what they have seen online and the news. Figure I share my personal advice on safety for those traveling domestically and internationally. I am also curious what other people have to say. A lot of this is general travel advice as well.
For context I have traveled to every corner of the lower 48 by train, visited 23? States and been through 41. Because visited has such a broad term, I'm counting grabbing a meal there. I also have never traveled internationally. All of what I'm about to say has a story that explains why I plan this way.
Before you leave:
Reaserch reaserch reaserch. Understand where you are going. Understand the weather, public transportation, food, what to expect when you actually get there. The US is massive, what is true about Boston isn't true about san Diego. I have always seen knowledge and understanding a place as a way to keep safe.
A lot of this also really just helps with quality of life and enjoyment.
Also make a plan. Plan out where you are going, when, how long you will be at a place. Share this with someone you trust. This is also for you. If your on a longer trip, it is nice to have your plan in front of you. If your going solo, setup a location tracker. Also make a plan for realistic emergencies. For me that was loosing my phone and debit card. Planning ahead like this reduces panic, because you know what you need to do. You just need to execute. Don't plan for hypotheticals, plan realistically around yourself. I loose stuff a lot so I planned around that.
If your gonna be spontaneous or aren't flying, understand what modes of transportation your taking, where they go, routes and connections. I rode Amtrak a lot, I could tell you multiple ways I could get to Milwaukee (where I'm from) if I had to in a pinch.
If you read or watch the news as part of your preparation, take what they say as a bit exaggerated. But if there is an area with unrest or problems, stay away and don't contribute to it
Last bit is more geared at enjoyment. But condition yourself. If you don't walk much but want to on the trip, go for walks. Being in shape never hurt anyone.
On the trip
Most important thing. You are a guest and represent where you are from, if your from the US that is either your state or city. Respect the people, and be nice. This shouldn't need to be said.
Bartenders, police, transit employees are your best guides when it comes to a city. Police are nice if you are nice to them. Helpful for avoiding risky areas Bartenders are the best guides. Transit employees are really helpful if your new to transit or are a bit confused.
People are nicer than you think, don't be scared to ask questions. Similarly, don't be scared to say no to people. Just be nice and respectful but look out for yourself.
Have the Uber or Lyft app installed. If it's a late night or feel uncomfortable, it is the best way to keep safe.
There is a lot more I could probably include, but I feel like this covers the big parts.
