How do I get these folds out ?

I bought these 7 years ago and while I haven’t worn them all that much over the years (last time was probably two years ago), they are still so comfy and my absolute favorite. I have always kept a shoe tree in them but today as I was packing up my apartment, I pulled them out, and saw that both shoes have this huge fold (?) on them roughly in the same position. If I feel the folds from the inside, it feels like the leather has crumped/crinkled a bit in that spot. What can I do?

(Sorry for the poor description, not sure of the nomenclature, but hopefully the photos are clear enough.)

EDIT: I haven’t worn these in probably two years so it’s not from wear and tear as another commenter suggested. I moved countries around 6 mos back and when I was packing these up, it didn’t look like this. But now that I think about it, it probably had something to do with how I’ve stored them in the closet the past 6 months.

Is there a way to turn off automatic Google translations? Either via my Google account or browser settings.

I would like Google Maps reviews to show up in the original language, but they keep translating to English. For context, I live in France, but reviews keep automatically translating to English. There is the "Show Original" option that I can click on, but that appears to be on a per-review basis, so I have to click it each time.

Does anyone know if there's a solution either via my Google account settings or browser settings?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Combo washer-dryer (lave-linge séchant) under ~85 cm hauteur -- do they exist?

hey all - random question lol has anyone been able to find a combo washer-dryer that's under 85cm tall, or is that the minimum height for a combo machine on the market today? if not, what are some useful things you do to more efficiently dry clothes in the winter with only a washer?

merci!

Owners with off-leash dogs (sorry in advance for ranting on this topic...)

Hey everyone - just wanted to get something off my chest and see if other folks are having similar experiences here.

I was doing my usual morning walk w/ my dog (small 6 kg / 13lb) off the side of Trocadero near the side/service entrances when we cross paths with a lady and her off-leash bulldog / pitbull (normal for that breed). My dog reacts by growling and swinging his leash, but we continue walking. I know my dog is reactive towards other dogs. I'm working on it with a trainer, and I bring training treats with me on every walk, and if I can spot a dog beforehand, I'll usually backtrack to avoid crossing another dog (per his trainer's recommendation). But what I can't control for are these situations where I don't see the other dog in time, and the other dog is off-leash.

In any case, my dog reacts, and the pitbull comes rushing at my dog, circling him and trying to get to him. He's right on top of us, so I keep one hand on my leash and the other hand on the the pitbull, pushing him away, while the lady tries to harness him. I obviously get very pissed off at her and yell at her that if she can't recall her dog (or, more loosely, if she can't control her dog), then he should be on a leash (didn't mention this part to her, but there's a reason it's illegal for your dog to be off-leash!).

I walk away and the Trocadero worker who's sitting there and watching the whole time watching tells me that it's my dog's fault because "he reacted and he's méchant". In my broken French (which I'm working on improving!), I tell her that’s the reason why my dog is on a leash and if other people can't control their dogs, they should also be on leash. She then says that she knows the other dog, who is old and gentil. In my head I'm thinking - if she's so old and gentil, why did she charge my dog? The other tell-tale sign was that as I was approaching the lady on the sidewalk initially, at which point I still couldn't see the dog behind her around the corner, the lady turned around towards her dog after she saw me coming, as if she was worried that something would happen.

This is the first time that another dog has come rushing at mine. There was another instance where a dog rushed my wife and bit her on the knee, and the other lady was like "did my dog do that?" (side story, now I see that other lady walking around and her dog is now on a leash). I live in a building where there are many other dogs, and while most of them are off-leash, the owners know my dog so they all call their dogs back (successfully). And that's also in our building's driveway so away from the public.

End of rant is that I just don't understand what it is about the French (generally) and letting their dogs off leash. Again, putting aside the legal aspect of it, if you can't recall your dog successfully, I don't care how old or gentil he is, he needs to be on leash (even if it's a long one!). One of my favorite French sayings is "La liberté des uns s'arrête là où commence celle des autres" which basically translates to "The freedom of one person ends when the freedom of another begins", which is particularly applicable when talking about shared public spaces! I know this somehow also ties into how the French (again, generally) don't pick up their dog's poop... something about their dogs being free to live..

I'm doing everything I can to train my dog, and I do my best to avoid uncomfortable situations, but every time something like this happens, it sets my dog back multiple steps.

Has anyone else had this experience?

Hi - question about rental process in Paris, specifically before a lease is signed

Hey everyone, just had a few quick questions for those who have successfully rented an apartment in Paris (bonus if it was a furnished rental).

  1. When does the LL typically send over the lease for review? Before the official walkthrough but after your application has been accepted, or only during the walkthrough?

  2. When can you sign the lease?

  3. When is the security deposit due? (Either 50% or the full 2-month amount)

I'm going through a situation right now where the LL has accepted my dossier but is requesting a security deposit before lease signing to guarantee the apartment (to show him that "I'm serious"). I told him no, since that is illegal, and he seems to have backed off - though he still wants me to sign an "engagement form" to confirm my interest. I responded that I'll only send the deposit when I have a fully executed lease. The current tenant is my friend, so I know the LL is not a scammer (and the LL had asked him the same to which he replied "no" when they were going through the same process), but he has been somewhat difficult to deal with.

Why does it cost money to call your local FNAC store ?

Could someone with more knowledge please explain this to me ? I’m trying to call one of the FNAC stores in Paris (from Paris) using my French phone number, and their website says that it’ll cost €0.20 / minute. I’m unfamiliar with these kinds of charges when you’re calling someone / something from the same country, let alone the same city / neighborhood.

Does anyone know why they charge money to call them ?

First time a monitor has pooped out on me - looking for advice! LENOVO-LEGION-R27QE

Hi - this is the first time a monitor has ever crapped out on me. These horizontal lines and red gradients randomly appeared tonight on the bottom ~50% of my monitor. Updated drivers, did the screenshot test to confirm it wasn't my screen, unplugged cables, restarted, etc. I use the same monitor for my personal PC (DP) and my work laptop (HDMI), and the monitor has the same lines in both cases.

I submitted a ticket via Lenovo Support, and since I just bought this monitor < 2 mos ago, it's still covered and I'm hoping fingers-crossed to get a replacement quickly.

I assume I've done everything I can at this point, but has anyone else experienced this or something similar with this monitor (LENOVO-LEGION-R27QE) and how did you troubleshoot it? Or did you just get a replacement via warranty.

Obvious (but maybe not so obvious to everyone) PSA: Do not engage with the « three cup scammers »

I walk thru the Jardins du Trocadéro every day, and I still see way too many non-scammers standing around these games and watching for far too long. Clearly enough people still fall for the scam in 2026 since the scammers are still at it, but I’m hoping with all the information that’s out there and the trip preps I see, people will slowly learn to avoid them.

My guess is the people who need to hear this are not the ones on this sub, so please just spread the word to anyone you know who’s traveling to Paris that they should not engage w/ these people and to not get baited by all the insiders standing around and clapping and seemingly winning money.

Seems obvious but clearly it’s not based on what I see every day.

EDIT: and as u/jonathan_peachum pointed out, simply standing there exposes yourself to potential pickpocketing. Because it signals that you are not only a) a tourist but b) an ill-informed one and are therefore an easy target. These are the same people who pickpocket unsuspecting tourists on trains, so just please keep walking and don’t engage.
