Alright I’m 8 chapters into the manga and I have a question

Why didn’t Loid act as the child himself again? Why was Anya necessary?

Which Twin Do You Think Is Dying By The End Of The Story?

Personally I think Yuru's gonna die. (And I mean death as permanent, the seal revival has already happened)

Thought On The Current State Of Yuru’s Character And What You Wanna See Moving Forward? Also Predictions (*MANGA SPOILERS*)

I really think it’s a shame that he hasn’t had any major character moment except that one scene in the Kagemori manor or him shouting at the village (they were good but they weren’t anything cataclysmic). Said this before but I really like that we’re honing in the twins specifically as of late

Also some random predictions:

  • Ivan kills Yuru for the first time/ Ivan fucks up either of the twins
  • Meeting their parents will break apart the twins
  • Tadera dies
  • The Kagemoris will be antagonists again
  • Yuru eventually starts learning to use guns
  • Yuru lugs around a big ass sniper rifle and goes crazy with it in the final arc (this has one and the one above no basis in the story btw I just wanna see this)
  • Yuru or Asa dies at the end (only one not both)
  • Jin will defeat Misasagi

Just Caught Up To The Manga And Wow There Are A lot Of Issues (*MANGA SPOILERS*)

Just want to start off by saying that I did enjoy my read with Yomi no Tsugai. The catastrophe following the birth of the break and seal users and Yuru eventually getting seal is what drove me to catch up with it. Additionally, the world building and fights are spectacular and am looking forward to continuing reading, especially now that Asa and Yuru have some time together without the overwhelming cast but we’ll get into that later. My goal isn’t to unfairly attack this story but to judge it critically and I am more than obliged to more open discussion about this series. But for now I wanna list off some of my gripes with the story (which there are a lot of)

First thing I wanna say that’s gonna get me some flak, it’s about the so-called “morally grey“, or lack thereof. Despite being told by the narrative and by people online that both sides are bad, it’s clear one you actually take a good look the Kagemoris end up being portrayed more virtuous than grey a lot of the time, especially moreso compared to Higashi village. But you may be thinking “what about gabby she killed alot of the villagers at the start of the series” and boy don’t you worry I have a lot to say about later on but back on topic, the Kagemoris are basically the good guys and Higashi village are the bad guys. We repeatedly see Kagemoris do heroic things, we see Gonzo take Asuma’s mother in, we see the Kagemoris mourn the death of a gardener, we see them paying the tanuki and fox girl’s mother‘s medical bills and let her leave later on and offer the other guy a job there, and most importantly of all, we see them take good care of Asa and whose main goal is to end the cycle of the birth of break and seal, well except for Asuma but again we’ll address him later. Now compare that to Higashi village, we see them send bandits after Yuru, leave assassins to die in their domain, and everyone wants Yuru dead so he can claim seal and that they can conquer the world, Heck even Danny and Fake Asa knew what they were doing was wrong. Also that entire backstory about the village lord (which i wouldn’t change btw its great). Now yeah the Kagemoris aren’t no saints, yeah they kill people here and there but they would never kill civilians (except the villagers but we’ll talk about that in the gabby sections) nor children, unlike Higashi village. But the most damning evidence for my claim is the simple fact that we care more about the the Kagemoris (Haruo, Hikaru and Jin to name a few) than any of the villagers (Dera and Hana don’t count anymore as they no longer serve the interest of the village). It is very clear that there is a moral imbalance between the Kagemoris and Higashi village and with us no longer having ties to Higashi village anymore (Yuru telling them to f*ck off), we have no reason to see them as anything other than villains, not antagonists, villains with the bar exception of Kyoka and ONLY Kyoka.

Now onto the most contentious scene in the entire f*cking story for me, the village massacre and the biggest counter evidence to my “there are no morally grey characters” claim. This scene was always at the forefront of my mind while reading the manga and was an extremely strong hook, shame it gets followed up in the worst way possible. So the main purpose of this scene to my understanding is to show that the Kagemoris are villains but reveal as time goes on that they’re not all bad. But it seems Arakawa-sensei overcorrected and made them the good guys for aforementioned reasons and paint the Higashi Village as evil people who deserve. This is the worst thing we see the Kagemoris do and they never do anything else close to it while we Higashi repeatedly transgress. What I think Arakawa-sensei was trying to do was introduce the village as good and the Kagemoris as bad but later muddy it up by making them both grey. However she seemed to forget that the Kagemoris are in fact not good people and that the Higashi village didn’t deserve what happened and thus we never see the Kagemoris do anything truly awful and we never see the humanity in the villagers.

Now onto Gabby, I despise her with all my soul, not just because what she did but also what the narrative expects me from her. It is abundantly clear Arakawa-sensei is trying to get me to like her, from her monologue about protecting Asa, to her not killing the kids, to her getting pissed about daemons being treated as tools (even though she killed a pair) and her not killing civilians. Now this wouldn’t be a problem on its own, a character like that should be allowed to have f*cked up morals, that’s not my main issue, my issue is that as mentioned before, Arakawa-sensei expects me to like her. If the story was truly morally grey it would’ve respected my decision In not liking her, but it doesn’t. My entire issue with Gabby would’ve been solved is Yuru’s hatred of her was treated with gravitas instead of a joke, which is probably the most heinous shit the humor has done coming from someone who really didn’t mind the humor that much.

Speaking of Yuru, him along with Asa have it quite easy, too easy. Neither of them go through much of any dramatic hardships, physical nor emotional. The long arm and long legs daemons don’t really count as meaningful villains as they were more a showcase of Yuru’s crafty abilities and how he works with Dera. Both of Yuru’s fight with Ivan (GOAT) were pretty good though I feel it lacked tension due to how hyper competent and well coordinated the Kagemoris along with the Tadera’s especially in the first big fight. While yes, In the second big fight Gonzo did die which did have a lot of wight behind it, the fact that they were able to subdue and catch every Nishino combatant showed bar 1 goes to show how competent they are.

Expanding on my critique of the first big fight, it practically had zero tension once we found out that Asuma’s one of the good guys (which I’m not very fond of but could be overturned later cause of his whole “break and seal should remain under an organisation“ spiel) and that everything’s under control. I really don’t like the first big fight of a story to be dogwash but whatever. I vastly prefer the second big fight cause of this as Misasagi was able to cause some massive damage to our heroes unlike the first bum whose name I forgot, while Nishino village did lose it does set up Misasagi as a pretty good antagonist (also if you noticed his colour palette is quite similar to the divine guardians), though even then Asa and Yuru caught Ivan reletavely unscathe.

I also really wish Yuru was more emotive and we got to hear his inner thoughts and was given more character focus instead of the frankly bloated side cast (Jesus Christ there’s so many of them), probably would’ve gotten me to care about reuniting with his family a lot more. Really wish it toned down the comedy a fair bit though it really doesn’t affect my enjoyment of the show. I really wish the story can lock in for there upcoming chapters as we still haven’t got any big meaningful emotionally resonant moments (except for Ken’s reunion with his father and Danji and Fake Asa’s apology but they really didn’t hit that hard). Still around 13 volumes and not a single character defining moment is kinda crazy. All my stocks are in Ivan after that ridiculous lost I got from betting too much on fake Asa plotline (I honestly think Arakawa sensei should not have had a fake Asa as it promised a way more interesting plot line about Yuru grappling with the fact that his real sister killed someone innocent whom he thought she was his real sister and causing them to have a bit of a messy relationship and a good level of friction between the siblings, a direction that I think Arakawa sensei wouldn’t have wanted at the very begging of the series so she had to resolve in a rather boring manner). The story up to this point has been also kinda boring cause again, nothing emotionally impactful has happened and we only recently got a big bad that gives this story some much needed direction.

With that, this is all of my issues with Yomi no Tsugai now onto some of my hopes for this series. I really hope a big twist shows up regarding the twins parents that shakes up the entire series. I hope Ivan fucks up Yuru real bad in the future. I hope when Yuru’s gets seal it’s going to be emotionally impactful. And in general loving the current direction of the series with it focusing on Asa and Yuru exclusively. And for the love of God I hope this story locks in for its latter half cause I know it has the potential to do something special. Looking forward to reading this monthly

tl;dr: the Kagemori are actually the good guys and Higashi village are the bad guys despite what the series tell you, Gabby f*cking sucks, nothing emotionally impactful happens for 50 MONTHLY chapters and the pacing is abysmally slow with little character focus on the main twins going to the rather bloated side cast, though despite that it has some insane potential and the plot hopefully seems to be speeding up. Open to discussion in the comment.
