Made a rom hack of Pokemon Y, and put it on my 3DS. However the starters will not change no matter what I do. Everything else in the hack works fine except that. I double checked and the 2 .CRO files for starters do change when edited, but when using layeredFS I still am seeing nothing

Just got the game today and am at mimic queen and have gotten 0 new equipment pieces at any point. I couldn't equip anything in the starting town so I didn't buy anything then since I didn't know what I'd need but it seems insane that nearly 4 hours in and im still using the starting equipment for everyone and the game feels way too hard considering I've played FF1-9 as well as 13 and 14. Also despite leveling I don't think my attack or defense has increased at all? Is that only via equipment?
most other FFs have an on screen death, tidus maybe counts? but it's def not the same as something like 2, 4, 5, or 7s deaths(ok maybe 4s). so if someone was to get directly killed, who, how, and when? personally I'd say giving kimari a death avenging their clan or something like that could add a lot to them and they wouldn't be too missed mechanically
