Should I get a debt consolidation loan?
I currently have 2 credit cards and one personal loan I am working to pay off to be debt free. I am wondering if I should apply for a debt consolidation loan (I'd go through my credit union or USAA). Here is my current debt situation:
credit card 1
$4897, 9.75% APR
credit card 2
$2300, 26.24% APR
personal loan
$1737, 11.75% APR
I originally got into debt because of car repairs and only making $20k a year (not a good excuse, but I had no option but survival at the time). I now make between $40-$45k and have changed my spending habits and have a structured budget. If I were to get a debt consolidation loan, I would cut up/hide my credit cards to ensure no further spending.
My question is, would you keep the almost $5k balance on the card with 9.75% APR, or include it in the consolidation loan? Should I look for an intro APR card to transfer the high interest balance since the other two APRs are pretty low? Should I just keep my cards as is and focus on paying them down as much as possible?
