Wolf & Company in Logan Square

Another pizza post. I don’t see Wolf & Company mentioned much and I think their food deserves a post.

I think it’s worth mentioning: tavern style is my least favorite pizza. Most places have tavern style that’s way too burnt for my liking. I will (almost) always select a different pizza style if I have the option. But I am a fan of Wolf & Company’s tavern style and will certainly order it again.

It’s not cheap though (build your own = $20 base, pepperoni = +$3, bacon = +$4). If it was a big pizza, price would be fair, but two people can finish it with ease (or one hungry person can finish it with ease).

They also have a good breakfast sandwich at the cafe (apparently independently-operating within their space) and a cool mini market, as well!

Pizza Matta in Logan Square

I’ve lived in Logan Square for about 4 years now. This place wasn’t in existence when I first moved here but it’s definitely not a new spot. I don’t know why it took me forever to make a visit.

My local go-to for NY style pizza *was* Dante’s on Armitage, but Pizza Matta is going to be my new go-to going forward (because it’s about half the price [the cheapest in the neighborhood, to my understanding] and there’s no drop off in quality / flavor). I’d put it in the same tier with Pizza Lobo and StopAlong. Not my favorite pizza in Chicago, but it definitely fulfills a pizza craving and it’s super cheap.

Two big pepperoni slices were less than $10 in total.

They also have tavern style, but that’s my least favorite type of pizza so I didn’t try it and can’t vouch for it.

Are you sticking or are you twisting, considering the remaining matchups?

Finished at the top of the mini league in the first round. Only one other person this round has Dest and did not captain him.

Vini, Mbappe, Olise, Valencia, Messi, and Diaz all have favorable odds for scoring/assisting, although only Dest would get the bonus points. Nobody in my mini league has Vini or Valencia.

Would you continue to play hot potato with the captain band?

Addressing Big Misconceptions About Rep Boots

*For context: I have bought a few dozen rep boots over the past 1.5-2 years for myself and others from about a dozen different sellers (almost entirely from Alibaba). I have had my hands on and played in more rep boots than most people. I play on TF/AG or futsal at a frequency of 1-4x/week, I haven’t played on grass in years. I’ve also previously worked several years at a speciality store where boots were >50% of the store’s business.*

Misconception 1: Rep boots are dangerous.

This is something regurgitated by those who have never played in reps before, out of fear. It’s not based on evidence or anecdotes. The fact of the matter is, you’re more likely to get injured by simply playing the sport rather than your fake boots disintegrating while you play. Authentic boots fall apart or bust open too, sometimes only after a few uses if they’re defective. Boots, in general, aren’t designed to be durable, they’re designed to “perform” or aesthetically resemble the top tier models. Reps will likely and generally last as long as authentic versions.

Misconception 2: Rep quality is trash compared to high performance boots.

First and foremost, “performance” is a misnomer. Boots don’t perform, you do, regardless of the tech. They don’t make you a better player. Comfort and how they fit your foot structure matters above all else. There are kids in favalas without shoes that’ll dribble circles around you and your high “performance” boots.

That said, rep boots do have variable quality, in terms of how well they match the authentic versions. Many of you may already know the sole plate stiffness may not match (although that’s getting better with reps). Sometimes the color is slightly off (although I personally could not care any less about coloring). From personal experience, kangaroo leather reps probably don’t exist. I have yet to find reps that match the weight of the ultra light boots out there, like puma ultimates. However, there are some rep boots I’ve brought in and compared at my local specialty shop with little-to-no difference (e.g. the batches of the phantom elites are usually quite good).

Funny enough, some reps have superior quality. I have brought in phantom ELITE turfs with the knitted upper. Nike only made phantom turfs in pro and academy, without knitted uppers.

A good handful of rep suppliers care about their craft and do their best to match authentic models. It’s a lucrative business and part of maintaining a good business is putting out a good product.

There are definitely bad reps out there, but the idea that all reps are worse (or more dangerous) than authentic models are made by people that don’t know what they’re talking about.

Chicken Caesar Wrap (Village Tap)

The partner in crime and I have been on a mission to find our favorite chicken Caesar wrap/sandwich in the city. Village Tap always gets heavily upvoted whenever it’s recommended so we finally got around to trying it.

As far as wraps go, this was decent. The girth is a major bonus (fries were meh, wings were okay, bacon cheeseburger was surprisingly good).

Little Victories is probably our favorite for wraps. We’ve tried Nonna’s (we liked), Will’s Northwood’s (we disliked), Pitaki (we disliked (my personal least favorite)), Sweetgreen (we disliked (we were getting desperate for a good one)), and Roscoe’s Tavern (we liked).

Our current gold standard is the Caesar cutlet sub from D’Amato’s, between wraps and sandwiches.

Always open to more suggestions!

Jersey-Go Multi-Haul

I have bought many jerseys from several different vendors before. I have used Jersey-Go multiple times and this vendor is my current go-to. Here are some of what I’ve bought already.

PRICE: Unbeatable. Jerseys generally range from $8-15. There’s a special sales page with a decent selection.

CUSTOMER SERVICE: Top notch. We communicate via WhatsApp. Responses take less than 24 hours (usually a few hours at most, sometimes instantaneously). This vendor has corrected mistakes (sent me a jersey free of charge that was missing from my order). This vendor sends quality check images. This vendor has given me a hefty discount since I had to pay US tariff fees after the package shipped and before it could get delivered. This vendor will try to locate jerseys that are unlisted on their site. I’ve noticed a lot of vendors don’t try to make right what may be wrong, but Jersey-Go will help solve any problem.

QUALITY: 4.5/5. This is typical for any vendor. If you order enough jerseys, you’ll find an error eventually. Sometimes the name/number/logo isn’t correctly place or not centered appropriately. Sometimes there are loss strands (these can easily be snipped off). Sometimes the numbers and names have a crease because the jersey was folded up shortly after being printed (sometimes these go away). The jersey material itself is very close to authentic versions, in addition to matching the font of names and numbers. This part matters to me the most for quality. And for the price:quality ratio, Im happy to accept some minor flaws.

JERSEY SELECTION: Has the standard abundance of jersey selections for a wide range of teams. They’ve added a jersey to the site upon request that wasn’t listed beforehand, as well.

SHIPPING: My orders usually take about 1-1.5 weeks to get shipped out. They usually arrive 1.5-2.5 weeks after being shipping.

OVERALL: I have yet to find a reason to use another vendor UNLESS there’s a jersey I’m after that isn’t listed on Jersey-Go’s site. They have the best prices, customer service as good as anywhere else, and respectable shipping times.

I enjoyed Cabra, it was good (meeting the minimum word requirement)

1st image: Pollo a la Brasa (the potatoes beneath the chicken had a nice crisp to them, as well)

2nd image: Chicken Thigh Skewer

3rd image: Hot Chorizo & Queso Dip (green bean thing in the background that my wife ordered but I didn’t try)(I could’ve just snacked on the flatbread the whole time, it was great)

4th image: Salchipapas

One of maybe a handful of times where I’ve ordered multiple items on a menu and they were all exceeding expectations.

Definitely a good vibe on a warm day. A bit on the pricey side, but standard for Fulton Market ($120 ish for all this). I’d go back, but probably not in a heartbeat.

Morgan Gibbs-White selection dilemma

Are you keeping him out of your starting lineup or are you hoping he laces up and puts the Batman mask on to help Forest avoid relegation?

I’ve seen some discussion/questions about adopting subscription-based payments so I figured I’d share what I do, if anyone needs ideas on how to successfully make the switch.

I offer 4 different tiers of subscriptions:

- Up to 4 sessions every 4 weeks

- Up to 8 sessions every 4 weeks

- Up to 12 sessions every 4 weeks

- Flex subscription

If you have clients that train with you 4x/week or more, you can expand your tiers or offer an unlimited subscription (but I’d advise against the latter, I think that can introduce more difficulty, plus I can’t think of many reasons where a client is going to be needing to train with you more than 16x every 4 weeks).

I also recommend 4 week cycles. You’ll make more money over time, compared to charging on the 1st of each month. You also don’t have to worry about prorating your subscriptions, you can pretty much start the 4 week cycle whenever.

You should have a use-it-or-lose-it policy. You can also rebrand it as an accountability policy. This policy should be well-defined and it should be in whatever terms/conditions form that you make your clients sign prior to training. Advertising as “up to” x amount of sessions every 4 weeks AND having these policies will save you headaches for potential unfulfilled sessions in the cycle, if a client pushes back.

That said, if I am the reason that clients can’t get all the sessions they could have potentially fulfilled, I can simply override the policy and make it right somehow (e.g. discount on the next subscription). One of the perks of being self-employed is you can set the rules and change the rules to make them ethical/logical for the sake of good business and client relationships.

One thing that I have added later on is the Flex subscription, since many clients travel for work or can’t stay consistent for whatever reason. This is basically a retrospective payment where we just look at how many sessions were accomplished over 4 weeks and I send them an invoice based on which tier the total count coincides with.

For example, if a client trained with me 5x in 4 weeks, they’d get charged the subscription for up to 8x / 4 weeks. The next 4 week cycle, if they trained 9x, they’d get invoiced for the subscription that coincides with up to 12x / 4 weeks. Rates will vary with clients like these and it’s important that they understand that (and sign their name on a form) prior to pursing a Flex subscription.

I think that’s all I have to say, but if I remember anything, I’ll add it into the comments.

Feel free to ask questions too. Other subscription-based trainers are free to add their wisdom!
